Progressive रहा construction

Hindi forms its central progressive with a lexical verb stem followed by agreeing रहा/रही/रहे and a finite auxiliary: कर रहा है “is doing,” जा रही थी “was going,” पढ़ रहे होंगे “will probably be reading.” The construction views an event from inside, as ongoing or developing. It is layered morphology, not a single suffix corresponding to English -ing.

Formation

Remove -ना from the infinitive to find the lexical stem. Then add the progressive layer and the appropriate auxiliary.

LayerExampleContribution
infinitiveलिखनाto write
stemलिख-writing event
progressiveलिख रहाongoing viewpoint + masculine singular agreement
auxiliaryलिख रहा हैpresent, third-person singular

अमन बालकनी में पत्र लिख रहा है।

aman bālkanī meṃ patr likh rahā hai.

Aman is writing a letter on the balcony.

नैना रसोई में चाय बना रही है।

nainā rasoī meṃ cāy banā rahī hai.

Naina is making tea in the kitchen.

रहा agrees with the grammatical controller; the lexical stem never changes for gender. Present है then makes both clauses finite and locates them in the present.

💡
Do not attach रहा to the infinitive. The structure is कर + रहा, not करना + रहा; जा + रही, not जाना + रही.

Compact agreement paradigm

ControllerProgressive layerPresent example
masculine singularरहावह पढ़ रहा है
feminine singularरहीवह पढ़ रही है
masculine or mixed pluralरहेवे पढ़ रहे हैं
feminine pluralरहीवे पढ़ रही हैं
respectful masculine singularरहेआप पढ़ रहे हैं
respectful feminine singularरहीआप पढ़ रही हैं

Feminine रही is the same in singular and plural; है/हैं distinguishes them in the present. Respectful आप takes honorific plural agreement even for one person.

मेरी बेटियाँ ऊपर पढ़ रही हैं।

merī beṭiyā̃ ūpar paṛh rahī haiṃ.

My daughters are studying upstairs.

सर, क्या आप अभी सुन रहे हैं?

sar, kyā āp abhī sun rahe haiṃ?

Sir, are you listening right now?

The auxiliary locates the ongoing event

The progressive layer remains, while the final auxiliary changes temporal or modal anchoring. For the broader division of labor between these layers, see finite predicates and auxiliaries.

FormInterpretation
कर रहा हैis doing
कर रहा थाwas doing
कर रहा होगाwill be doing / is probably doing
कर रहा होmay be doing / be doing in a subordinate or irrealis setting

The future-looking होगा can also express conjecture about the present. Context decides whether वह काम कर रहा होगा means “He will be working” or “He is probably working.” Full future and subjunctive systems belong on their dedicated pages.

जब मैंने फ़ोन किया, वह खाना खा रहा था।

jab maĩne fon kiyā, vah khānā khā rahā thā.

When I called, he was eating.

इस समय वह ट्रेन में बैठा किताब पढ़ रहा होगा।

is samay vah ṭren meṃ baiṭhā kitāb paṛh rahā hogā.

He is probably sitting on the train reading a book right now.

Progressive रहा is not lexical रहना

Lexical रहना means “stay, live, remain” and has its own stem रह-. Progressive रहा is grammatical aspectual material after another stem.

वह भोपाल में रहता है।

vah bhopāl meṃ rahtā hai.

He lives in Bhopal.

वह इस महीने भोपाल में रह रहा है।

vah is mahīne bhopāl meṃ rah rahā hai.

He is staying in Bhopal this month.

The second sentence legitimately contains lexical stem रह- plus progressive रहा: “stay + ongoing.” Repetition of the sound is not an error.

Event types and important limits

The progressive is natural with activities, changes, and temporary processes.

बाहर बारिश हो रही है।

bāhar bāriś ho rahī hai.

It is raining outside.

शहर की आबादी तेज़ी से बढ़ रही है।

śahar kī ābādī tezī se baṛh rahī hai.

The city's population is growing rapidly.

Pure states resist a mechanical progressive. Standard Hindi normally says मैं उसे जानता हूँ “I know him,” not मैं उसे जान रहा हूँ for a stable state of knowledge. चाह रहा हूँ can occur when wanting is presented as a current intention—especially in polite, tentative speech—but it is not a universal substitute for चाहता हूँ.

मैं आपसे एक बात पूछना चाह रहा था।

maĩ āpse ek bāt pūchnā cāh rahā thā.

I wanted to ask you something. (male speaker; polite conversational framing)

This common conversational softener treats the intention as developing background and is especially natural in polite spoken interaction. In concise neutral prose, मैं आपसे एक बात पूछना चाहता था is also natural.

Agreement follows syntax, not the semantic experiencer

Progressive aspect is imperfective; an ordinary transitive subject remains unmarked and controls agreement. Do not add perfective ने.

रीमा नई किताब पढ़ रही है।

rīmā naī kitāb paṛh rahī hai.

Rima is reading a new book.

In a dative-experiencer construction, another noun can control the progressive layer.

मुझे बहुत नींद आ रही है।

mujhe bahut nīnd ā rahī hai.

I am getting very sleepy.

Feminine नींद, not the person encoded by मुझे, controls रही है. The English semantic subject is therefore an unreliable agreement guide.

💡
First identify the eligible grammatical controller, then choose रहा/रही/रहे. The person who experiences or causes the event is not automatically that controller.

Negation and questions

Progressive negation normally keeps the finite auxiliary.

मैं अभी गाड़ी नहीं चला रहा हूँ।

maĩ abhī gāṛī nahīṃ calā rahā hū̃.

I am not driving right now. (male speaker)

क्या बच्चे सो रहे हैं?

kyā bacce so rahe haiṃ?

Are the children sleeping?

लड़कियाँ बाहर क्यों नहीं खेल रही हैं?

laṛkiyā̃ bāhar kyoṃ nahīṃ khel rahī haiṃ?

Why aren't the girls playing outside?

Questions do not invert subject and auxiliary as English questions do. Wh-words normally remain in their clause position, and agreement remains unchanged.

Common Mistakes

Attaching रहा to the infinitive

❌ वह खाना बनाना रही है।

Incorrect — remove -ना and attach रही to the stem बना-.

✅ वह खाना बना रही है।

vah khānā banā rahī hai.

She is cooking.

Nasalizing the feminine progressive participle

❌ लड़कियाँ गाना गा रहीं हैं।

Incorrect in the standard construction — feminine plural uses रही हैं, without nasalization on रही.

✅ लड़कियाँ गाना गा रही हैं।

laṛkiyā̃ gānā gā rahī haiṃ.

The girls are singing a song.

Omitting the auxiliary

❌ मैं तुम्हारा इंतज़ार कर रहा।

Incorrect as a neutral complete present progressive; हूँ is required.

✅ मैं तुम्हारा इंतज़ार कर रहा हूँ।

maĩ tumhārā intazār kar rahā hū̃.

I am waiting for you. (male speaker)

Adding perfective ने

❌ नेहा ने पत्र लिख रही है।

Incorrect — the progressive is imperfective; use an unmarked subject.

✅ नेहा पत्र लिख रही है।

nehā patr likh rahī hai.

Neha is writing a letter.

Forcing a stable state into the progressive

❌ मैं उसे कई सालों से जान रहा हूँ।

Incorrect for stable ‘know’ in neutral Standard Hindi; use the habitual-looking stative form.

✅ मैं उसे कई सालों से जानता हूँ।

maĩ use kaī sāloṃ se jāntā hū̃.

I have known him for many years. (male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Form the progressive with lexical stem + agreeing रहा/रही/रहे
    • a finite auxiliary.
  • The progressive layer supplies ongoing viewpoint; the auxiliary supplies temporal or modal anchoring.
  • Feminine singular and plural both use रही; present है/हैं distinguishes number.
  • Progressive रहा is grammatical aspectual material and must be distinguished from lexical रहना “stay/live.”
