Past progressive

The past progressive presents an event from inside at a past reference time: मैं खाना बना रही थी “I was cooking.” Its form is verb stem + रहा/रही/रहे + था/थी/थे/थीं. It commonly supplies background for a completed event, shows simultaneous past activity, or describes a process that was underway without asserting its completion.

Compact paradigm

ControllerPast progressive of सोना
masculine singularसो रहा था
feminine singularसो रही थी
masculine or mixed pluralसो रहे थे
feminine pluralसो रही थीं
respectful masculine singularसो रहे थे
respectful feminine singularसो रही थीं

The progressive form and past auxiliary agree together: रहा था, रही थी, रहे थे, रही थीं. Feminine plural रही is not nasalized; plural marking appears on थीं.

रवि सोफ़े पर सो रहा था।

ravi sofe par so rahā thā.

Ravi was sleeping on the sofa.

मीरा खिड़की के पास पढ़ रही थी।

mīrā khiṛkī ke pās paṛh rahī thī.

Mira was reading near the window.

लड़कियाँ मैदान में अभ्यास कर रही थीं।

laṛkiyā̃ maidān meṃ abhyās kar rahī thīṃ.

The girls were practicing on the field.

Unlike the present auxiliary, the past auxiliary visibly marks gender as well as number. Person does not create separate past forms: a male speaker says मैं पढ़ रहा था, while a female speaker says मैं पढ़ रही थी.

Ongoing at a past reference point

A time expression can establish the moment from which the event is viewed.

कल रात दस बजे हम खाना खा रहे थे।

kal rāt das baje ham khānā khā rahe the.

At ten last night, we were eating dinner. (male or mixed group)

उस समय शहर तेज़ी से बदल रहा था।

us samay śahar tezī se badal rahā thā.

At that time, the city was changing rapidly.

The construction does not say whether the meal was finished or where the change eventually led. Progressive viewpoint leaves the event's outer boundary outside the assertion.

💡
Past progressive locates the viewer inside a past event. To assert that the event reached its endpoint, Hindi normally needs a perfective or an additional completion expression.

Background plus a completed event

A common narrative pattern places an ongoing background in the past progressive and an interrupting or foregrounded event in the perfective.

जब फ़ोन बजा, मैं नहा रहा था।

jab fon bajā, maĩ nahā rahā thā.

When the phone rang, I was taking a shower. (male speaker)

हम स्टेशन जा रहे थे कि अचानक बारिश शुरू हो गई।

ham sṭeśan jā rahe the ki acānak bāriś śurū ho gaī.

We were going to the station when it suddenly started raining.

बजा/शुरू हो गई present bounded events that advance the story. नहा रहा था/जा रहे थे establish what was already underway. This foreground-background contrast is aspectual, not merely English tense matching.

The conjunction कि in the second example introduces a sudden turn after an ongoing setup. It is a conventional narrative pattern, not the ordinary complementizer meaning alone.

Simultaneous ongoing events

Two progressives can show processes overlapping in time.

मैं खाना बना रही थी और बच्चे मेज़ लगा रहे थे।

maĩ khānā banā rahī thī aur bacce mez lagā rahe the.

I was cooking while the children were setting the table. (female speaker)

बाहर हवा चल रही थी और पत्ते उड़ रहे थे।

bāhar havā cal rahī thī aur patte uṛ rahe the.

The wind was blowing outside, and leaves were flying around.

Each clause has its own agreement controller. Feminine हवा selects चल रही थी; masculine plural पत्ते selects उड़ रहे थे.

Past progressive versus past habitual

अरुण शाम को पुस्तकालय में पढ़ता था।

aruṇ śām ko pustakālay meṃ paṛhtā thā.

Arun used to study in the library in the evening.

कल शाम अरुण पुस्तकालय में पढ़ रहा था।

kal śām aruṇ pustakālay meṃ paṛh rahā thā.

Arun was studying in the library yesterday evening.

Habitual पढ़ता था presents a former routine or disposition. Progressive पढ़ रहा था opens one past interval. English was studying usually points toward the progressive, while used to study points toward the habitual, but time structure—not a memorized English label—is the reliable distinction.

For the larger contrast, see habitual versus progressive.

Duration continuing up to a past point

With से, the past progressive can express an event that had already continued for a duration at the past reference time.

जब बस आई, हम आधे घंटे से इंतज़ार कर रहे थे।

jab bas āī, ham ādhe ghaṇṭe se intazār kar rahe the.

When the bus came, we had been waiting for half an hour.

Hindi does not need a separate formal equivalent of English had been waiting here. से establishes the starting boundary or elapsed duration; कर रहे थे views the waiting as ongoing at the later past point.

वह कई दिनों से ठीक से सो नहीं रही थी।

vah kaī dinoṃ se ṭhīk se so nahīṃ rahī thī.

She had not been sleeping properly for several days.

This negative still keeps past थी. The event is an ongoing absence/failure to sleep properly, not a simple completed non-event.

Questions and negative forms

क्या तुम मेरा इंतज़ार कर रहे थे?

kyā tum merā intazār kar rahe the?

Were you waiting for me? (familiar, male addressee)

रीना कल बैठक में क्यों नहीं बोल रही थी?

rīnā kal baiṭhak meṃ kyoṃ nahīṃ bol rahī thī?

Why wasn't Rina speaking at the meeting yesterday?

Questions preserve predicate-final order and ordinary agreement. Negative नहीं precedes the progressive predicate, and the past auxiliary remains present.

Agreement in experiencer constructions

The semantic experiencer may be marked by को, leaving another noun as the agreement controller.

मुझे रात में बहुत ठंड लग रही थी।

mujhe rāt meṃ bahut ṭhaṇḍ lag rahī thī.

I was feeling very cold at night.

Feminine ठंड controls रही थी; the speaker's gender does not. This differs from मैं काँप रहा था/रही थी “I was shivering,” where unmarked मैं controls agreement.

Past progressive is imperfective. An ordinary transitive actor is unmarked, not marked with perfective ने:

सोनिया रिपोर्ट लिख रही थी।

soniyā riporṭ likh rahī thī.

Sonia was writing the report.

💡
Do not add ने simply because the English sentence is past. Hindi ने is tied chiefly to perfective transitive structure, while the past progressive remains imperfective.

Past progressive versus conjectural रहा होगा

कर रहा था is an asserted past ongoing event. कर रहा होगा often expresses either future progressive or present conjecture.

वह तब दफ़्तर में काम कर रहा था।

vah tab daftar meṃ kām kar rahā thā.

He was working at the office then.

वह अभी दफ़्तर में काम कर रहा होगा।

vah abhī daftar meṃ kām kar rahā hogā.

He is probably working at the office now.

The contrast belongs to the auxiliary layer: था anchors known past time; होगा can mark inference. The progressive layer remains कर रहा.

Common Mistakes

Using the past habitual for one interrupted event

❌ जब तुमने फ़ोन किया, मैं खाना बनाती थी।

Incorrect for one event underway at that moment; बनाती थी describes a former routine.

✅ जब तुमने फ़ोन किया, मैं खाना बना रही थी।

jab tumne fon kiyā, maĩ khānā banā rahī thī.

When you called, I was cooking. (female speaker)

Using a present auxiliary in a past frame

❌ कल रात बच्चे सो रहे हैं।

Incorrect for an event ongoing last night; use past थे.

✅ कल रात बच्चे सो रहे थे।

kal rāt bacce so rahe the.

The children were sleeping last night.

Mismatching the two agreement layers

❌ महिलाएँ बाहर इंतज़ार कर रहे थीं।

Incorrect — feminine plural requires रही थीं, not रहे थीं.

✅ महिलाएँ बाहर इंतज़ार कर रही थीं।

mahilāẽ bāhar intazār kar rahī thīṃ.

The women were waiting outside.

Omitting the past auxiliary

❌ मैं कल घर लौट रहा।

Incorrect as a neutral complete past progressive; था is required.

✅ मैं कल घर लौट रहा था।

maĩ kal ghar lauṭ rahā thā.

I was returning home yesterday. (male speaker)

Adding perfective ने

❌ सीमा ने टीवी देख रही थी।

Incorrect — the past progressive is imperfective and takes an unmarked subject.

✅ सीमा टीवी देख रही थी।

sīmā ṭīvī dekh rahī thī.

Seema was watching television.
