Result clauses with इसलिए

इसलिए means “for this reason, therefore, so.” It points back to an established cause and presents what follows as its consequence: बारिश बहुत तेज़ थी, इसलिए मैच रोक दिया गया “The rain was very heavy, so the match was stopped.”

Grammatically, इसलिए behaves more like a connective adverb than a subordinating conjunction. The result clause can stand as an independent sentence, and इसलिए can follow a topic or subject inside it. This distinguishes it from क्योंकि, which introduces a reason clause, and ताकि, which introduces an intended outcome.

For the opposite discourse direction, compare cause clauses with क्योंकि, where the claim comes before its explanation.

Cause first, result second

The neutral pattern is:

cause clause, इसलिए + result clause

ट्रेन दो घंटे देर से थी, इसलिए हमने बस ले ली।

ṭren do ghaṇṭe der se thī, islie hamne bas le lī.

The train was two hours late, so we took a bus.

आज बैंक बंद है, इसलिए भुगतान कल किया जाएगा।

āj baiṅk band hai, islie bhugtān kal kiyā jāegā.

The bank is closed today, so the payment will be made tomorrow.

The cause can be present while the result is future. इसलिए imposes a logical connection, not tense agreement.

💡
With इसलिए, state or establish the reason first. Then use इसलिए to announce the consequence the listener should draw from it.

इसलिए can begin a new sentence

Because it points back into discourse, इसलिए can follow a full stop:

रास्ते में लंबा जाम लगा है। इसलिए हमें थोड़ा पहले निकलना चाहिए।

rāste meṃ lambā jām lagā hai. islie hameṃ thoṛā pahle nikalnā cāhie.

There is a long traffic jam on the route. Therefore, we should leave a little earlier.

It can also occur after the subject:

रास्ते में जाम है; हम इसलिए मेट्रो से जाएँगे।

rāste meṃ jām hai; ham islie meṭro se jāẽge.

There is a traffic jam; for that reason, we will go by metro.

The second order gives हम topic status before the backward-pointing reason adverb. This positional mobility is evidence that इसलिए is not simply the first word of a subordinate result clause.

Simple and expanded versions

बहुत देर हो गई थी, इसलिए हम लौट आए।

bahut der ho gaī thī, islie ham lauṭ āe.

It had become very late, so we came back.

पहाड़ी रास्ते पर बर्फ़ लगातार बढ़ रही थी और आगे दृश्यता बहुत कम हो गई थी, इसलिए सुरक्षा दल ने सभी यात्रियों को तुरंत वापस लौटने की सलाह दी।

pahāṛī rāste par barf lagātār baṛh rahī thī aur āge driśyatā bahut kam ho gaī thī, islie surakṣā dal ne sabhī yātriyoṃ ko turant vāpas lauṭne kī salāh dī.

Snow was steadily accumulating on the mountain road and visibility ahead had become very poor, so the safety team advised all travelers to turn back immediately.

The expanded cause coordinates two facts before drawing one result. The final advice is not backshifted mechanically; it is a completed past action in its own clause.

इसलिए versus क्योंकि

These connectors can describe the same causal relation from opposite directions:

मैंने बैठक छोड़ दी क्योंकि मेरी अगली ट्रेन का समय हो गया था।

maĩne baiṭhak choṛ dī kyoṅki merī aglī ṭren kā samay ho gayā thā.

I left the meeting because it was time for my next train.

मेरी अगली ट्रेन का समय हो गया था, इसलिए मैंने बैठक छोड़ दी।

merī aglī ṭren kā samay ho gayā thā, islie maĩne baiṭhak choṛ dī.

It was time for my next train, so I left the meeting.

क्योंकि attaches the explanation to a claim. इसलिए treats the cause as given and advances to its consequence. Combining both in one unplanned sentence is common in hesitant conversation, but careful prose normally chooses one direction or uses the balanced चूँकि … इसलिए … construction.

Result is not purpose

Compare an actual consequence with an intended goal:

मैं जल्दी निकला, इसलिए समय पर पहुँच गया।

maĩ jaldī niklā, islie samay par pahũc gayā.

I left early, so I arrived on time. (actual result, male speaker)

मैंने जल्दी टैक्सी ली ताकि समय पर हवाई अड्डे पहुँच सकूँ।

maĩne jaldī ṭaiksī lī tāki samay par havāī aḍḍe pahũc sakū̃.

I took a taxi early so that I could reach the airport on time. (intended purpose)

The इसलिए sentence asserts that the arrival actually occurred. The ताकि sentence states the aim and does not by itself guarantee success.

💡
Test the relation with two questions: क्यों? asks for a cause, while उसका नतीजा क्या हुआ? asks for a result. इसलिए answers the second question and points back to the already established cause.

Focused “for this reason”

Inside one clause, इसलिए can itself be focused and followed by an explanation:

मैं इसलिए रुका क्योंकि प्रबंधक मुझसे बात करना चाहती थीं।

maĩ islie rukā kyoṅki prabandhak mujhse bāt karnā cāhtī thīṃ.

I stayed for this reason: the manager wanted to speak with me. (male speaker; honorific female manager)

Here इसलिए is a reason proform inside the main clause, and क्योंकि identifies its content. This is not redundant cause + result pairing: the phrase means “for this reason—because…”. Prosody normally emphasizes इसलिए.

Non-finite and nominal alternatives

A cause phrase can be compressed with के कारण or की वजह से:

तकनीकी ख़राबी के कारण कार्यक्रम देर से शुरू हुआ।

taknīkī xarābī ke kāraṇ kāryakram der se śurū huā.

The program started late because of a technical fault.

A converb can encode sequence from which a result is inferred:

संदेश पढ़कर वह तुरंत बाहर चली गई।

sandeś paṛhkar vah turant bāhar calī gaī.

After reading the message, she immediately went outside.

The converb overtly marks prior action, not logical consequence. Perhaps the message caused her departure, but discourse supplies that inference. इसलिए explicitly instructs the listener to treat the second proposition as a consequence.

Spoken dialogue

आज कार क्यों नहीं ले रहे? — सड़क बंद है, इसलिए मेट्रो से जाएँगे।

āj kār kyoṃ nahīṃ le rahe? — saṛak band hai, islie meṭro se jāẽge.

Why aren't you taking the car today? — The road is closed, so we'll go by metro.

The answer gives cause then decision. Conversational तो could also introduce a consequence, but इसलिए makes the causal inference explicit.

Formal written example and boundary

निर्धारित अवधि में पर्याप्त वर्षा नहीं हुई; इसलिए जलाशय से पानी की आपूर्ति सीमित की जाएगी।

nirdhārit avadhi meṃ paryāpt varṣā nahīṃ huī; islie jalāśay se pānī kī āpūrti sīmit kī jāegī.

Adequate rainfall did not occur during the specified period; therefore, the water supply from the reservoir will be limited. (formal)

Annotated structure:

[निर्धारित अवधि में पर्याप्त वर्षा नहीं हुई] | इसलिए [जलाशय से पानी की आपूर्ति सीमित की जाएगी]

The semicolon suits two substantial independent clauses. A period would also be grammatical because इसलिए can connect across sentence boundaries.

Register alternatives

इस कारण “for this reason” is transparent and formal-neutral. अतः is strongly (formal/Sanskritic) and common in official or academic conclusions. सो “so” occurs in narrative and some conversational styles (literary/regional), but it is not the safest all-purpose learner substitute.

Common Mistakes

❌ बारिश बहुत तेज़ थी, मैच रद्द हुआ।

Incomplete for the intended explicit cause-to-result link—juxtaposition leaves the inference unstated.

✅ बारिश बहुत तेज़ थी, इसलिए मैच रद्द हुआ।

bāriś bahut tez thī, islie maic radd huā.

The rain was very heavy, so the match was canceled.

❌ मैं सुबह की ट्रेन से इसलिए निकला दोपहर तक पहुँच सकूँ।

Incorrect for purpose—इसलिए cannot replace the finite purpose marker ताकि.

✅ मैं सुबह की ट्रेन से निकला ताकि दोपहर तक पहुँच सकूँ।

maĩ subah kī ṭren se niklā tāki dopahar tak pahũc sakū̃.

I left on the morning train so that I could arrive by noon. (male speaker)

❌ इसलिए बस छूट गई थी, हम पैदल लौटे।

Incorrect as an isolated cause-first sentence—इसलिए points backward but no prior cause has been established.

✅ क्योंकि बस छूट गई थी, हम पैदल लौटे।

kyoṅki bas chūṭ gaī thī, ham paidal lauṭe.

Because we had missed the bus, we walked back.

❌ हम घर इसलिए लौटे देर बहुत हो गई थी।

Incorrect—the explanatory finite clause needs क्योंकि, or the cause must be stated first.

✅ बहुत देर हो गई थी, इसलिए हम घर लौटे।

bahut der ho gaī thī, islie ham ghar lauṭe.

It had become very late, so we returned home.

Key Takeaways

  • इसलिए points back to a cause and introduces or highlights its consequence.
  • It is a mobile connective adverb, not a subordinating complementizer, and can begin a new sentence.
  • क्योंकि orders claim → reason; इसलिए orders cause → result; ताकि marks intended purpose.
  • Each clause keeps independent subject reference and tense–aspect choices.
  • Non-finite sequencing may invite a result inference, but इसलिए marks that inference overtly.
