Purpose clauses with ताकि

ताकि introduces a finite clause naming an intended outcome: मैंने अलार्म लगाया ताकि मैं समय पर उठ सकूँ “I set an alarm so that I could get up on time.” The main clause describes a deliberate action or arrangement; the ताकि clause explains what that action is meant to make possible.

English often uses an infinitive—“I left early to arrive on time”—even when Hindi can choose between finite ताकि and non-finite -ने के लिए. The decisive difference is clause structure: ताकि can introduce its own subject and finite modal or subjunctive predicate.

The basic finite pattern

The neutral order is:

main clause + ताकि + purpose clause

मैंने खिड़की बंद कर दी ताकि बाहर का शोर कम हो जाए।

maĩne khiṛkī band kar dī tāki bāhar kā śor kam ho jāe.

I closed the window so that the noise from outside would decrease.

kripyā thoṛā dhīre bolie tāki sab log noṭs le sakeṃ.

Please speak a little more slowly so that everyone can take notes. (respectful)

Each side has its own subject reference and predicate. In the second sentence, the understood subject of बोलिए is respectful आप, while overt सब लोग is the subject of ले सकें.

💡
Choose ताकि when the intended result needs its own finite clause—especially with a different subject, सकना, or explicit possibility and prevention.

The purpose predicate is prospective, not an ordinary prediction

Purpose exists as an intention at the time of the main action. Hindi therefore commonly uses subjunctive forms such as आए, हो, करे, सकें, not a plain future prediction after ताकि.

hamne sīmā ko pahle hī sandeś bhej diyā tāki vah samay par ā sake.

We sent Seema a message in advance so that she could arrive on time.

fāil kā nām sāf likhie tāki bād meṃ koī bhram na ho.

Write the file name clearly so that there is no confusion later. (respectful)

The past main clause भेज दिया does not force a past form inside the purpose clause. आ सके remains prospective relative to the sending. This is not English-style sequence of tense; each clause receives the form required by its meaning.

Negative purpose usually uses preverbal न in neutral and formal usage: ताकि कोई भ्रम न हो. नहीं also occurs, especially when denying a state rather than formulating prevention, but मत belongs to direct prohibitions and is not the neutral purpose-clause negator.

💡
A useful diagnostic is factuality: ताकि presents an outcome as intended, not as achieved. If the sentence must assert that the outcome really happened, use a result connection such as इसलिए instead.

When both actions share a subject, an oblique infinitive with के लिए is usually more compact:

मैं समय पर पहुँचने के लिए जल्दी निकला।

maĩ samay par pahũcne ke lie jaldī niklā.

I left early in order to arrive on time. (male speaker)

The finite version is possible when ability or intention deserves emphasis:

मैं जल्दी निकला ताकि समय पर पहुँच सकूँ।

maĩ jaldī niklā tāki samay par pahũc sakū̃.

I left early so that I could arrive on time. (male speaker)

The omitted subject of पहुँच सकूँ is recovered as मैं from first-person agreement. With a different subject, finite ताकि is much clearer:

मैंने दरवाज़ा खुला छोड़ा ताकि मेहमान आसानी से अंदर आ सकें।

maĩne darvāzā khulā choṛā tāki mehmān āsānī se andar ā sakeṃ.

I left the door open so that the guests could come in easily.

The infinitival alternative मेहमानों के अंदर आने के लिए is grammatical in some nominal frames but is heavier and does not express the same finite modal perspective as naturally. Review के लिए purpose for its non-finite form.

Clause order and punctuation

The purpose clause usually follows the action it explains. It can be placed first when the intended outcome is the discourse frame:

ताकि किसी को इंतज़ार न करना पड़े, हम बैठक ठीक दस बजे शुरू करेंगे।

tāki kisī ko intazār na karnā paṛe, ham baiṭhak ṭhīk das baje śurū kareṅge.

So that no one has to wait, we will start the meeting at exactly ten.

A comma is helpful after a long initial ताकि clause. In speech, intonation marks the boundary. Do not join two bare finite clauses with only a comma and expect the listener to infer purpose.

A simple and an expanded version

maĩne battī jalāī tāki vah paṛh sake.

I turned on the light so that she could read.

maĩne mez ke ūpar vālī tez battī jalā dī tāki nehā binā ā̃khoṃ par zor ḍāle apnī riporṭ pūrī kar sake.

I switched on the bright light above the table so that Neha could finish her report without straining her eyes.

Expansion adds modifiers and a non-finite बिना … डाले phrase, but the purpose boundary remains ताकि. The clause contains no automatic tense copying from जला दी to कर सके.

Spoken dialogue

khiṛkī kyoṃ khol rahe ho? — tāki kamre meṃ thoṛī tāzī havā ā sake.

Why are you opening the window? — So that some fresh air can come into the room. (familiar)

A ताकि clause can stand as a conversational answer because the omitted main action is supplied by the question. In isolated formal prose, it normally depends on an expressed main clause.

Formal written example and boundary

sansthān ne āvedan prakriyā saral kī hai tāki adhik ummīdvār samay par apne dastāvez jamā kar sakeṃ.

The institute has simplified the application process so that more candidates can submit their documents on time. (formal)

Annotated structure:

The bar shows the analytic boundary, not written punctuation. The two clauses have different subjects and independently organized predicates.

Purpose, cause, and result are different

ताकि looks forward from an intentional action to a desired outcome. क्योंकि gives an actual reason; इसलिए presents an actual consequence.

maĩ jaldī niklā kyoṅki saṛak par bahut bhīṛ thī.

I left early because the road was very crowded. (actual cause)

saṛak par bahut bhīṛ thī, islie maĩ jaldī niklā.

The road was very crowded, so I left early. (actual result)

Neither sentence states an intended future outcome. Connector choice encodes the logical relation rather than merely linking clauses.

Common Mistakes

Incorrect as a purpose construction—punctuation alone does not mark the intended relation.

maĩne alārm lagāyā tāki maĩ jaldī uṭh sakū̃.

I set an alarm so that I could get up early.

Incorrect—an intended outcome normally takes a subjunctive or modal form, not plain future

use sāf samjhāie tāki vah samajh sake.

Explain it clearly to him so that he can understand. (respectful)

Incorrect—मत is a direct prohibition, not neutral purpose-clause negation.

darvāzā dhīre band karo tāki baccā na jāge.

Close the door quietly so that the child does not wake up. (informal)

Incorrect—ताकि must introduce a purpose clause; it cannot follow a beneficiary phrase by itself.

maĩne baccoṃ ke lie khānā banāyā.

I cooked food for the children.

Key Takeaways

  • ताकि introduces a finite intended outcome, often with subjunctive or modal force.
  • The purpose clause may have its own subject; a same-subject -ने के लिए phrase is often more compact.
  • A past main action does not force past tense in the prospective purpose clause.
  • न is the neutral preventive negator; मत belongs to direct commands.
  • Purpose must be overtly linked; a converb or bare juxtaposition expresses sequence unless context supplies intention.
