क्योंकि introduces a finite reason: मैं घर पर रहा क्योंकि मेरी तबीयत ठीक नहीं थी “I stayed home because I was not feeling well.” The main clause states the claim to be explained; the क्योंकि clause supplies the cause, evidence, or speaker's justification.
Unlike इसलिए “therefore,” क्योंकि points forward to a reason. Unlike ताकि “so that,” it describes a reason treated as real, not an intended outcome. Each finite clause keeps its own subject and tense–aspect perspective.
The neutral reason-after-claim pattern
The most straightforward order is:
main claim + क्योंकि + reason
आज बैठक ऑनलाइन होगी क्योंकि मुख्य कमरा उपलब्ध नहीं है।
āj baiṭhak onlāin hogī kyoṅki mukhya kamrā uplabdh nahīṃ hai.
Today's meeting will be online because the main room is unavailable.
हमने टैक्सी बुला ली क्योंकि आख़िरी बस निकल चुकी थी।
hamne ṭaiksī bulā lī kyoṅki āxirī bas nikal cukī thī.
We called a taxi because the last bus had already left.
The first main clause is future while its reason is present. The second main clause and reason locate two completed events in the past, with निकल चुकी थी presenting the bus departure as already complete. क्योंकि does not force both predicates into the same tense.
Clause-initial क्योंकि
Contemporary speakers also place the reason first:
क्योंकि बाहर बहुत शोर था, हमने खिड़कियाँ बंद कर दीं।
kyoṅki bāhar bahut śor thā, hamne khiṛkiyā̃ band kar dīṃ.
Because it was very noisy outside, we closed the windows.
This order is common and grammatical in speech and ordinary writing. In especially formal balanced prose, चूँकि … इसलिए … is often preferred:
चूँकि सभी सदस्य उपस्थित थे, इसलिए बैठक समय पर शुरू हुई।
cū̃ki sabhī sadasya upasthit the, islie baiṭhak samay par śurū huī.
Since all the members were present, the meeting began on time. (formal)
चूँकि is (formal) and naturally anticipates इसलिए. Neutral क्योंकि usually does not need a matching result word when it follows the claim.
Simple and expanded versions
मैं नहीं आया क्योंकि मैं बीमार था।
maĩ nahīṃ āyā kyoṅki maĩ bīmār thā.
I did not come because I was ill. (male speaker)
मैं कल की समीक्षा बैठक में शामिल नहीं हो पाया क्योंकि अचानक तेज़ बुख़ार होने के बाद डॉक्टर ने मुझे घर पर आराम करने की सलाह दी।
maĩ kal kī samīkṣā baiṭhak meṃ śāmil nahīṃ ho pāyā kyoṅki acānak tez buxār hone ke bād ḍokṭar ne mujhe ghar par ārām karne kī salāh dī.
I could not attend yesterday's review meeting because, after I suddenly developed a high fever, the doctor advised me to rest at home. (male speaker)
The expanded reason contains a non-finite temporal phrase तेज़ बुख़ार होने के बाद and a finite predicate सलाह दी. The main causal boundary remains the single क्योंकि.
Different subjects are fully independent
रीना जल्दी निकल गई क्योंकि उसके बच्चों की छुट्टी आज पहले हो रही थी।
rīnā jaldī nikal gaī kyoṅki uske baccoṃ kī chuṭṭī āj pahle ho rahī thī.
Reena left early because her children's school was getting out early today.
The main subject is Reena; the causal clause has subject उसके बच्चों की छुट्टी. Hindi pronouns must remain referentially clear. If two women or two groups could be antecedents of उसके, repeat a name or noun.
Same-subject clauses may omit a repeated pronoun when agreement and context make it recoverable:
वह जल्दी सो गई क्योंकि सुबह पाँच बजे उठना था।
vah jaldī so gaī kyoṅki subah pā̃c baje uṭhnā thā.
She went to bed early because she had to get up at five in the morning.
The necessity expression does not repeat the experiencer. This is licensed by context, not by क्योंकि itself.
Finite clause versus nominal cause phrase
A finite क्योंकि clause can state a full proposition. Hindi also uses के कारण (formal/neutral) and की वजह से (neutral/informal) with nouns or nominalized expressions:
तेज़ बारिश के कारण उड़ान देर से रवाना हुई।
tez bāriś ke kāraṇ uṛān der se ravānā huī.
The flight departed late because of heavy rain.
सड़क बंद होने की वजह से हमें लंबा रास्ता लेना पड़ा।
saṛak band hone kī vajah se hameṃ lambā rāstā lenā paṛā.
We had to take the long route because the road was closed.
These are not finite cause clauses: बारिश is a noun, and सड़क बंद होने is a nominalized event. The cause-phrase page covers their internal forms.
A converb such as यह सुनकर literally sequences a reaction after hearing and often invites a causal inference:
यह ख़बर सुनकर सब लोग चुप हो गए।
yah xabar sunkar sab log cup ho gae.
On hearing this news, everyone fell silent.
The converb does not overtly say “because.” Context supplies the causal interpretation. क्योंकि is more explicit and allows a separate subject.
Spoken dialogue
तुम वापस क्यों आ गए? — क्योंकि मैं चाबी घर पर भूल गया था।
tum vāpas kyoṃ ā gae? — kyoṅki maĩ cābī ghar par bhūl gayā thā.
Why did you come back? — Because I had left the key at home. (familiar, male speaker)
A standalone क्योंकि clause is natural as an answer because the question supplies the main claim. In an isolated written paragraph, attach the reason to a clear proposition.
Formal written example and boundary
आवेदन की अंतिम तिथि बढ़ाई गई है क्योंकि तकनीकी समस्या के कारण कई उम्मीदवार फ़ॉर्म जमा नहीं कर पाए थे।
āvedan kī antim tithi baṛhāī gaī hai kyoṅki taknīkī samasyā ke kāraṇ kaī ummīdvār form jamā nahīṃ kar pāe the.
The application deadline has been extended because many candidates had been unable to submit the form owing to a technical problem. (formal)
Annotated structure:
[आवेदन की अंतिम तिथि बढ़ाई गई है] | क्योंकि [तकनीकी समस्या के कारण कई उम्मीदवार फ़ॉर्म जमा नहीं कर पाए थे]
The matrix passive describes the current administrative result; past नहीं कर पाए थे locates the reason earlier. No automatic matching or backshift is required.
क्योंकि versus इसलिए and ताकि
| Connector | Direction | Core meaning |
|---|---|---|
| क्योंकि | claim → reason | because |
| इसलिए | cause → result | therefore, so |
| ताकि | action → intended outcome | so that, in order that |
मैंने छाता लिया क्योंकि बारिश हो रही थी।
maĩne chātā liyā kyoṅki bāriś ho rahī thī.
I took an umbrella because it was raining.
बारिश हो रही थी, इसलिए मैंने छाता लिया।
bāriś ho rahī thī, islie maĩne chātā liyā.
It was raining, so I took an umbrella.
The real-world relation is similar, but discourse direction differs.
Common Mistakes
❌ मैं घर पर रहा, मेरी तबीयत ठीक नहीं थी।
Incorrect as an explicitly causal sentence—mere juxtaposition leaves the relation unmarked.
✅ मैं घर पर रहा क्योंकि मेरी तबीयत ठीक नहीं थी।
maĩ ghar par rahā kyoṅki merī tabīyat ṭhīk nahīṃ thī.
I stayed home because I was not feeling well. (male speaker)
❌ भारी बारिश क्योंकि उड़ान देर से हुई।
Incorrect—क्योंकि introduces a finite reason clause, not a bare noun phrase.
✅ भारी बारिश के कारण उड़ान देर से हुई।
bhārī bāriś ke kāraṇ uṛān der se huī.
The flight was delayed because of heavy rain.
❌ हम जल्दी निकले क्योंकि समय पर पहुँच सकें।
Wrong for an intended outcome—क्योंकि presents a reason, not a purpose.
✅ हम जल्दी निकले ताकि समय पर पहुँच सकें।
ham jaldī nikle tāki samay par pahũc sakeṃ.
We left early so that we could arrive on time.
❌ वह वापस गया क्योंकि अपना फ़ोन लेने के लिए।
Incorrect—the finite connector क्योंकि cannot directly introduce a bare infinitival purpose phrase.
✅ वह अपना फ़ोन लेने के लिए वापस गया।
vah apnā fon lene ke lie vāpas gayā.
He went back to get his phone.
