क्यों and किसलिए

Both क्यों and किसलिए can correspond to English why, but they do not always ask the same thing. क्यों is the broad, everyday question: it can request a cause, reason, motivation, or purpose. किसलिए literally means “for what,” so it directs attention to an intended purpose or use and can sound more pointed.

क्यों: the ordinary question “why?”

Use क्यों when you want an explanation. The answer may describe a cause with क्योंकि “because,” a motivation, or a goal with ताकि “so that.” The word is invariable and normally appears near the predicate or constituent whose reason is at issue.

tum āj daftar kyoṃ nahīṃ gae?

Why didn’t you go to the office today?

mīrā itnī jaldī kyoṃ calī gaī?

Why did Mira leave so early?

āpne yah rāstā kyoṃ cunā?

Why did you choose this route? (honorific)

In the first question, a cause such as क्योंकि मेरी तबीयत ठीक नहीं थी “because I wasn’t feeling well” is natural. In the third, a reason such as क्योंकि यहाँ ट्रैफ़िक कम है “because there is less traffic here” fits. Hindi does not grammatically force the speaker to distinguish cause from intention; context usually does that work.

The neutral order preserves the basic clause and substitutes क्यों for the reason: आपने यह रास्ता इसलिए चुना “You chose this route for that reason” becomes आपने यह रास्ता क्यों चुना? English moves why to the front and places an auxiliary before the subject. Hindi normally does neither.

💡
Pair question and answer words: क्यों asks for the missing reason, क्योंकि introduces a cause, and इसलिए resumes or identifies that reason while marking the resulting consequence. They are related in discourse, but they are not interchangeable parts of one fixed sentence pattern.

किसलिए: intended purpose or use

किसलिए is historically and transparently किस + लिए, “for what.” It asks what goal an action serves or what an object will be used for. It is especially useful when English why could hide the difference between “what caused this?” and “what is this meant to accomplish?”

tumne yah khālī ḍibbā kislie rakhā hai?

What have you kept this empty box for?

is kamre kā istemāl kislie hotā hai?

What is this room used for?

āpne mujhse ye kāġaz kislie mãgvāe?

What did you have me bring these papers for? (honorific)

These questions presuppose that the box, room, or papers have some intended function. A natural answer often uses के लिए: पुराने खिलौने रखने के लिए “for keeping old toys,” or an infinitive of purpose: रसीद जाँचने के लिए “in order to check the receipt.”

The spaced spelling किस लिए is also encountered, especially when the two elements receive separate emphasis. In edited modern prose, किसलिए is a common lexicalized spelling for the interrogative adverb. किसके लिए, by contrast, usually asks “for whom?” or “for which one?” and contains the genitive oblique interrogative किसके:

यह अतिरिक्त कुर्सी किसके लिए है?

yah atirikt kursī kiske lie hai?

Who is this extra chair for?

Do not confuse that recipient question with purpose-focused किसलिए. The broader oblique system is explained on postpositions with interrogatives.

Overlap and pragmatic force

For intentional actions, either form may be possible, but the focus differs.

tum bāzār kyoṃ jā rahe ho?

Why are you going to the market?

tum bāzār kislie jā rahe ho?

What are you going to the market for?

The क्यों question is open: perhaps the speaker wants to know what prompted the trip. किसलिए strongly invites a purpose such as “to buy vegetables.” Because it demands a justification, किसलिए can sound challenging when addressed abruptly to a person: तुमने मुझे किसलिए बुलाया? may imply “What exactly did you call me for?” Tone and context matter.

When an event has no intention-bearing participant, क्यों is normally the sensible choice:

आज आसमान इतना लाल क्यों है?

āj āsmān itnā lāl kyoṃ hai?

Why is the sky so red today?

Asking आसमान किसलिए लाल है? would oddly treat the redness as serving a purpose. This difference is not merely formality. किसलिए can occur in casual speech, and क्यों can occur in formal writing; the semantic contrast remains.

Polar questions and information questions

Clause-initial क्या asks whether a proposition is true. क्यों and किसलिए ask the listener to supply a reason or purpose.

kyā āpne baiṭhak radd kar dī?

Did you cancel the meeting?

āpne baiṭhak kyoṃ radd kar dī?

Why did you cancel the meeting?

The first permits हाँ or नहीं. The second presupposes, in its ordinary use, that the cancellation happened and asks for an explanation. That presupposition can be challenged: मैंने रद्द नहीं की “I didn’t cancel it.” This is why a bare “why?” question can feel accusatory if the underlying assumption is uncertain.

Do not add question-marker क्या merely because English uses did: neutral क्या आपने बैठक क्यों रद्द की? mixes a yes–no question with a reason question. In a highly marked context it might ask something like “Is the issue why you cancelled it?”, but it is not the ordinary construction.

Hindi wh-question contours vary by dialect, focus, and stance; neutral questions may end low or falling as well as level or rising. A forceful fall with emphatic stress on क्यों? can convey protest—“Why on earth?”—but a fall by itself is not necessarily marked.

tumne darvāzā khulā kyoṃ choṛ diyā?

Why did you leave the door open? (reproachful with falling intonation)

Politeness and conversational replies

The interrogative does not itself encode respect. Pronouns, agreement, requests, and voice do. Compare a familiar exchange with an honorific one:

तुम इतनी देर से क्यों आए? — बस छूट गई थी।

tum itnī der se kyoṃ āe? — bas chūṭ gaī thī.

Why are you so late? — I missed the bus. (familiar, addressed to a man)

āp mujhse kislie milnā cāhtī haiṃ? — chātravritti ke bāre meṃ pūchne ke lie.

What would you like to meet me about? — To ask about the scholarship. (formal/honorific, addressed to a woman)

A service encounter often softens the question through wording: कृपया बताइए, आप किसलिए आवेदन कर रहे हैं? (formal). Abrupt किसलिए? is grammatically complete but may sound like a demand for justification. Friendly क्यों? can be softened by intonation or अच्छा, क्यों?.

Echo questions repeat or challenge a reason already mentioned:

तुमने टिकट इसलिए लौटाया क्योंकि तारीख़ ग़लत थी?

tumne ṭikaṭ islie lauṭāyā kyoṅki tārīx ġalat thī?

You returned the ticket because the date was wrong?

Here rising intonation turns an otherwise declarative reason clause into a confirmation question. It is a biased question: the speaker already has a candidate explanation.

💡
Choose किसलिए when “for what purpose?” is the real issue. Choose क्यों for the unmarked “why?” and whenever the answer may be a cause rather than an intended goal.

Common Mistakes

Copying English inversion

Marked as a neutral question because English-style fronting is unnecessary; possible only with special contrast on क्यों.

āpne rāstā kyoṃ badlā?

Why did you change the route?

Adding question-marker

Incorrect as a neutral ‘Why is she upset?’—do not add polar क्या to an information question.

vah kyoṃ nārāz hai?

Why is she upset?

Using purpose-focused किसलिए for a natural cause

Odd unless the rain is imagined as having a purpose.

kal itnī bāriś kyoṃ huī?

Why did it rain so much yesterday?

Using कौन before a postposition

Incorrect—कौन takes the oblique form किस before के लिए.

yah upahār kiske lie hai?

Who is this gift for?

Key Takeaways

क्यों is the general reason question and can request a cause, motive, or purpose. किसलिए narrows the request to an intended purpose or use and may sound more pointed. Neither triggers English-style inversion, and neither normally combines with clause-initial polar क्या. Use ordinary Hindi order, let intonation signal neutrality or challenge, and choose respectful pronouns and agreement when the situation requires them.
