ताकि purpose

ताकि introduces the intended outcome of an action: “so that,” “in order that.” It joins a main clause to a finite purpose clause, usually with a subjunctive verb because the purpose is wanted or planned, not yet presented as an established fact. English often uses either to or so that without changing much else; Hindi makes a useful structural distinction between ताकि + finite clause and के लिए + infinitive or noun.

हम पहली बस से निकले ताकि नौ बजे तक पहुँच सकें।

ham pahlī bas se nikle tāki nau baje tak pahũc sakeṃ.

We took the first bus so that we could arrive by nine.

The main clause reports the chosen action, पहली बस से निकले. The ताकि clause names its goal, नौ बजे तक पहुँच सकें. Because the goal was not guaranteed merely by taking that bus, Hindi uses the subjunctive सकें, not a simple present or future as a mechanical copy of English.

The basic clause pattern

The neutral order is:

main action + ताकि + intended outcome

The two clauses may have the same subject or different subjects. Hindi often leaves a repeated pronoun unspoken when the reference is obvious, but it states the subject when doing so prevents ambiguity.

मैंने दरवाज़ा धीरे से बंद किया ताकि बच्चे की नींद न खुले।

maĩne darvāzā dhīre se band kiyā tāki bacce kī nīnd na khule.

I closed the door gently so that the child would not wake up.

कृपया पता साफ़ लिखिए ताकि कुरियर आपको आसानी से ढूँढ़ सके।

kripyā patā sāf likhie tāki kuriyar āpko āsānī se ḍhū̃ṛh sake.

Please write the address clearly so that the courier can find you easily.

हमने लिंक सबको भेज दिया ताकि वे बैठक में शामिल हो सकें।

hamne liṅk sabko bhej diyā tāki ve baiṭhak meṃ śāmil ho sakeṃ.

We sent the link to everyone so that they could join the meeting.

In the first example, “I” performs the main action but the child's sleep is the subject of the subordinate predicate. In the second and third, the subordinate subject is stated overtly: कुरियर and वे. ताकि does not impose a special case form on either subject; case and agreement come from the verb construction inside each clause.

💡
Use ताकि when the purpose needs its own finite proposition—especially when its subject differs from the main-clause subject. If one person performs both actions, के लिए + infinitive may be shorter, though ताकि remains possible.

Why the subjunctive is usual

A purpose points toward a desired possibility. At the moment of the main action, the speaker cannot assert that the goal has become fact. That irrealis meaning naturally attracts the present subjunctive: करूँ, करे, करें; हो, हों; मिले, मिलें. The verb can combine with a modal such as सकना, as in कर सकें, when ability or opportunity is part of the intended result.

खिड़की खोल दो ताकि कमरे में थोड़ी हवा आए।

khiṛkī khol do tāki kamre meṃ thoṛī havā āe.

Open the window so that some air comes into the room.

रसीद संभालकर रखिए ताकि ज़रूरत पड़ने पर उसे दिखा सकें।

rasīd sambhālkar rakhie tāki zarūrat paṛne par use dikhā sakeṃ.

Keep the receipt safe so that you can show it if needed.

मैं सारी बातें लिख लेती हूँ ताकि कुछ भूल न जाऊँ।

maĩ sārī bāteṃ likh letī hū̃ tāki kuch bhūl na jāū̃.

I write everything down so that I don't forget anything.

The subjunctive agrees with its own subject and honorific level. आए is third-person singular here; सकें agrees with respectful आप, understood from रखिए; जाऊँ is first-person singular. For the full endings, see the subjunctive in purpose clauses.

In actual conversation, speakers sometimes use a future form when they are presenting the intended consequence as a confident later event, but that changes the nuance toward prediction. Learners should make the subjunctive their neutral default after ताकि.

मैं अभी उसे संदेश भेज देता हूँ ताकि वह आने से पहले पढ़ ले।

maĩ abhī use sandeś bhej detā hū̃ tāki vah āne se pahle paṛh le.

I'll send her a message now so that she reads it before coming.

Here पढ़ ले is a subjunctive light-verb combination: completing the reading is the intended outcome. It is not an imperative addressed to the person within the sentence.

Negative purpose: ताकि...न

Negative purpose normally uses न before the subordinate predicate. In careful prose and ordinary speech, ताकि...न means “so that...not” or “lest.” नहीं can occur in a fuller negative proposition, but compact न is strongly favored when the clause names something the main action is designed to prevent.

फ़ोन को चुप कर दो ताकि आवाज़ न आए।

fon ko cup kar do tāki āvāz na āe.

Silence the phone so that it doesn't make a sound.

फ़ाइल की एक प्रति रख लो ताकि मूल दस्तावेज़ खो भी जाए तो काम न रुके।

fāil kī ek prati rakh lo tāki mūl dastāvez kho bhī jāe to kām na ruke.

Keep a copy of the file so that work doesn't stop even if the original document is lost.

English speakers often transfer not to directly and try to place न with the main infinitive. Hindi instead makes the prevented event into a finite clause after ताकि.

ताकि versus के लिए and इसलिए

These three expressions answer different questions.

FormMeaningTypical structure
ताकिso that; intended outcomefinite clause, usually subjunctive
के लिएfor; in order tonoun or oblique infinitive phrase
इसलिएtherefore; for that reasonresult asserted as a consequence

मैं दूध लेने के लिए बाज़ार जा रही हूँ।

maĩ dūdh lene ke lie bāzār jā rahī hū̃.

I'm going to the market to buy milk.

मैं बाज़ार जा रही हूँ ताकि मेहमानों के आने से पहले दूध ले आऊँ।

maĩ bāzār jā rahī hū̃ tāki mehmānoṃ ke āne se pahle dūdh le āū̃.

I'm going to the market so that I can bring milk before the guests arrive.

Both are natural with the same subject. The के लिए version packages “buying milk” as a compact purpose phrase; the ताकि version gives the goal its own viewpoint, timing, and finite verb. By contrast, इसलिए introduces an actual or inferred result:

दूध ख़त्म हो गया था, इसलिए मैं बाज़ार गई।

dūdh xatm ho gayā thā, islie maĩ bāzār gaī.

The milk had run out, so I went to the market.

That answers “why did you go?” with a cause. It does not state what the trip was intended to make possible in the same grammatical way. The result connectors इसलिए and अतः have their own page.

Position, punctuation, and register

Purpose normally follows the action that serves it. A fronted ताकि clause is possible when the speaker foregrounds the objective, especially in planned, instructional, or (formal) prose. In that order, a comma helps separate the long introductory clause.

ताकि सभी आवेदकों को बराबर समय मिले, साक्षात्कार दो दिनों में किए जाएँगे।

tāki sabhī āvedakoṃ ko barābar samay mile, sākṣātkār do dinoṃ meṃ kie jāẽge.

So that all applicants receive equal time, the interviews will be conducted over two days.

In ordinary (informal) conversation, speakers usually put the practical action first: साक्षात्कार दो दिन चलेंगे ताकि.... The connector ताकि itself is neutral and common across speech and writing. जिससे sometimes expresses a resulting means or effect in formal prose, and इस उद्देश्य से कि is an explicitly (formal/official) Sanskritic phrase meaning “with the objective that.” Neither is necessary for everyday purposes.

💡
A comma is useful between two substantial clauses, but punctuation does not create the purpose relation. The logic must already be “do X with the goal that Y become possible.”

Common Mistakes

1. Using a result connector for an intended outcome

❌ धीरे बोलिए, इसलिए बच्चा न जागे।

Incorrect — इसलिए presents a result, while the sentence intends a purpose.

✅ धीरे बोलिए ताकि बच्चा न जागे।

dhīre bolie tāki baccā na jāge.

Speak softly so that the child doesn't wake up.

2. Copying an English future mechanically

❌ मैंने अलार्म लगाया ताकि मैं समय पर उठूँगा।

Incorrect in the neutral purpose pattern — the future उठूँगा predicts rather than marks the intended outcome.

✅ मैंने अलार्म लगाया ताकि मैं समय पर उठूँ।

maĩne alārm lagāyā tāki maĩ samay par uṭhū̃.

I set an alarm so that I would get up on time.

3. Leaving the subordinate subject ambiguous

❌ रोहन ने कविता को बुलाया ताकि जल्दी काम पूरा करे।

Unclear — who is supposed to finish the work, Rohan or Kavita?

✅ रोहन ने कविता को बुलाया ताकि वह जल्दी काम पूरा करे।

rohan ne kavitā ko bulāyā tāki vah jaldī kām pūrā kare.

Rohan called Kavita so that she could finish the work quickly.

4. Doubling English “in order so that”

❌ हम ताकि समय बचाने के लिए ऑनलाइन मिले।

Incorrectly mixed structure — choose a ताकि clause or a के लिए phrase.

✅ हम समय बचाने के लिए ऑनलाइन मिले।

ham samay bacāne ke lie onlāin mile.

We met online in order to save time.

Key Takeaways

  • ताकि introduces a finite clause naming an intended, not guaranteed, outcome.
  • The present subjunctive is the neutral choice; it agrees with the subject inside the purpose clause.
  • Different subjects strongly favor ताकि; same-subject purposes may also use compact के लिए + infinitive.
  • Prevented outcomes normally take ताकि...न.
  • इसलिए reports a consequence or reason; it is not interchangeable with purpose ताकि.
