Punctuation across complex sentences

Punctuation in a complex Hindi sentence makes clause organization visible, but it does not create the organization. Connectors such as कि, क्योंकि, ताकि, हालाँकि, relative–correlative pairs such as जो … वह, and non-finite forms such as करके already mark grammatical relations. A comma, semicolon, colon, or dash then tells the reader how tightly the writer packages those units.

Modern Hindi uses both the Devanagari danda । and the full stop ., with the full stop especially common in digital and mixed-script publishing. There is no single comma rule mechanically equivalent to an English school rule. Good punctuation follows constituency, length, information structure, and genre.

A comma marks a boundary; it does not replace a connector

After a substantial initial subordinate clause, a comma helps the reader find the main clause.

जब अंतिम बस निकल गई, तब हमने स्टेशन के पास एक कमरा ढूँढ़ा।

jab antim bas nikal gaī, tab hamne sṭeśan ke pās ek kamrā ḍhū̃ṛhā.

When the last bus had left, we found a room near the station.

हालाँकि रास्ता अपेक्षा से कठिन था, फिर भी सभी यात्री सूर्यास्त से पहले शिविर पहुँच गए।

hālā̃ki rāstā apekṣā se kaṭhin thā, phir bhī sabhī yātrī sūryāst se pahle śivir pahũc gae.

Although the route was harder than expected, all the travelers still reached camp before sunset.

जब … तब and हालाँकि … फिर भी express the relations; the comma only displays the turn from subordinate frame to main assertion. Deleting तब or फिर भी can sometimes remain grammatical because the first connector already signals the relation. Replacing the connector with a comma alone usually leaves mere juxtaposition.

💡
First identify what grammatically links the clauses. Add punctuation for readability only after कि, a conjunction, a correlative pair, or a licensed non-finite relation has done the structural work.

Initial and final subordinate clauses

An initial adverbial clause is commonly followed by a comma, particularly when it is long. A short final adverbial clause is often integrated without a comma.

अगर मौसम साफ़ रहा, तो हम सुबह की नाव लेंगे।

agar mausam sāf rahā, to ham subah kī nāv leṅge.

If the weather stays clear, we will take the morning boat.

हम सुबह की नाव लेंगे अगर मौसम साफ़ रहा।

ham subah kī nāv leṅge agar mausam sāf rahā.

We will take the morning boat if the weather stays clear.

The second order is not less subordinate. Position and punctuation change information packaging: the first makes the condition the frame; the second adds it as a qualification. A comma before a long final clause can be stylistically useful, but Hindi does not require an English-style comma before every final subordinate clause.

Cause and purpose clauses behave similarly:

हमने बैठक ऑनलाइन रखी क्योंकि कई सदस्य शहर से बाहर थे।

hamne baiṭhak onlāin rakhī kyoṅki kaī sadasya śahar se bāhar the.

We held the meeting online because several members were out of town.

कृपया आँकड़ों के स्रोत भी जोड़ दीजिए, ताकि पाठक दावे की जाँच कर सकें।

kripyā ā̃kaṛoṃ ke srot bhī joṛ dījie, tāki pāṭhak dāve kī jā̃c kar sakeṃ.

Please add the data sources as well, so that readers can verify the claim. (respectful)

The comma before ताकि is a stylistic boundary in this relatively long request. It does not license omission of ताकि.

कि complements are normally integrated

A finite content clause introduced by कि is selected by a verb, noun, or adjective. A comma normally does not separate the selecting expression from its complement.

विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि नदी का पुराना रास्ता अब भी पहचाना जा सकता है।

viśeṣagyoṃ kā mānnā hai ki nadī kā purānā rāstā ab bhī pahcānā jā saktā hai.

Experts believe that the river's old course can still be identified.

Writing a comma immediately before कि merely because English sometimes pauses before a quotation or appended explanation is usually unnecessary. Direct quotation is different:

अधिकारी ने कहा, ‘कल से सभी काउंटर सामान्य समय पर खुलेंगे।’

adhikārī ne kahā, ‘kal se sabhī kāuṇṭar sāmānya samay par khuleṅge.’

The official said, ‘From tomorrow all counters will open at the normal time.’

The comma introduces quoted speech. The quote itself is an independent utterance; an indirect कि complement is grammatically integrated. Review the कि complement structure rather than treating both as punctuation variants.

Coordinated clauses: comma, semicolon, or full stop

Short clauses joined by और, लेकिन, पर, इसलिए often need no comma. A comma may mark a clear intonational turn; a semicolon suits two substantial independent clauses whose relation should remain visible.

मैंने नक्शा देखा और रीना ने रास्ता समझाया।

maĩne nakśā dekhā aur rīnā ne rāstā samjhāyā.

I looked at the map, and Reena explained the route.

पहला प्रस्ताव कम खर्चीला था; दूसरा लंबे समय के लिए अधिक टिकाऊ था।

pahlā prastāv kam xarcīlā thā; dūsrā lambe samay ke lie adhik ṭikāū thā.

The first proposal was less expensive; the second was more durable in the long term.

रात तक कोई पुष्टि नहीं मिली। इसलिए टीम ने प्रस्थान स्थगित कर दिया।

rāt tak koī puṣṭi nahīṃ milī. islie ṭīm ne prasthān sthagit kar diyā.

No confirmation arrived by night. Therefore, the team postponed its departure.

The last pair shows that इसलिए can connect across a sentence boundary. A full stop ends the orthographic sentence, but discourse carries the cause–result relation forward. Conversely, a comma between two unrelated finite clauses does not manufacture a causal relation.

💡
Use a semicolon when both sides could stand as sentences but you want the reader to compare them in one unit. Use a full stop when the second proposition deserves its own discourse step.

Converbs and participial phrases

A short integrated converb normally flows directly into its main clause:

दरवाज़ा बंद करके सीमा ने चाबी पड़ोसी को दे दी।

darvāzā band karke sīmā ne cābī paṛosī ko de dī.

After closing the door, Seema gave the key to the neighbor.

The understood closer is Seema, the main-clause subject. A comma is optional after a long initial converb phrase, but punctuation cannot repair a subject mismatch.

सभी अभिलेखों की दोबारा जाँच करके, समिति ने अंतिम सूची प्रकाशित की।

sabhī abhilekhoṃ kī dobārā jā̃c karke, samiti ne antim sūcī prakāśit kī.

Having rechecked all the records, the committee published the final list. (formal)

Detached participial phrases with their own stated reference are more readily set off:

बैठक समाप्त होने पर, प्रतिनिधि अलग-अलग समूहों में चर्चा करते रहे।

baiṭhak samāpt hone par, pratinidhi alag-alag samūhoṃ meṃ carcā karte rahe.

When the meeting ended, the delegates continued discussing matters in separate groups. (formal)

The comma highlights the adverbial frame. होने पर overtly marks the temporal relation; the comma does not decide whether the meeting or the delegates ended.

Relative–correlative pairs remain structurally connected

Paired forms such as जो … वह, जहाँ … वहाँ, and जितना … उतना often span long material. A comma can make the two halves visible.

जो उम्मीदवार सभी आवश्यक दस्तावेज़ समय पर जमा करेंगे, वही अगले चरण में बुलाए जाएँगे।

jo ummīdvār sabhī āvaśyak dastāvez samay par jamā kareṅge, vahī agle caraṇ meṃ bulāe jāẽge.

Those candidates who submit all the required documents on time will be called to the next stage.

The relative जो anticipates correlative वही. English puts the relative clause after its noun; Hindi often presents a relative frame first and resumes it. Omitting वही from a heavy sentence can leave readers waiting for the main constituent even if a comma is present.

Parentheses and dashes interrupt without changing clause grammar

Parentheses mark supplementary information; paired dashes give an interruption greater prominence.

नई समय-सारिणी (जिसे परिषद ने शुक्रवार को मंज़ूरी दी) अगले महीने लागू होगी।

naī samay-sāriṇī (jise pariṣad ne śukravār ko manzūrī dī) agle mahīne lāgū hogī.

The new timetable (which the council approved on Friday) will take effect next month.

यह निर्णय—जैसा कि अध्यक्ष ने बाद में स्पष्ट किया—केवल अस्थायी था।

yah nirṇay—jaisā ki adhyakṣ ne bād meṃ spaṣṭ kiyā—keval asthāyī thā.

This decision—as the chair later clarified—was only temporary.

The parenthetical clause interrupts the host but does not control its tense. Past मंज़ूरी दी/स्पष्ट किया and future लागू होगी or past था are chosen independently. English sequence-of-tense conventions do not require Hindi to backshift every embedded predicate.

Simple and expanded versions

बारिश रुकी, तो हम निकल पड़े।

bāriś rukī, to ham nikal paṛe.

When the rain stopped, we set out.

लगातार तीन घंटे की तेज़ बारिश कुछ देर के लिए रुकी, तो राहत दल ने नदी के पार बसे गाँवों तक पहुँचने का प्रयास फिर शुरू किया।

lagātār tīn ghaṇṭe kī tez bāriś kuch der ke lie rukī, to rāhat dal ne nadī ke pār base gā̃voṃ tak pahũcne kā prayās phir śurū kiyā.

When the heavy rain that had continued for three hours stopped for a while, the relief team resumed its attempt to reach the villages across the river.

Both use तो to present the second event as the next development. The longer version especially benefits from the comma because the first clause contains several modifiers.

Spoken dialogue about editing

यहाँ अल्पविराम लगाऊँ? — हाँ, शर्त वाला हिस्सा लंबा है; ‘तो’ के बाद मुख्य बात साफ़ दिखेगी।

yahā̃ alpvirām lagāū̃? — hā̃, śart vālā hissā lambā hai; ‘to’ ke bād mukhya bāt sāf dikhegī.

Should I put a comma here? — Yes, the conditional part is long; the main point will be clearly visible after to. (informal)

The semicolon in the answer joins explanation and consequence. In speech, pauses and intonation perform the organizational work that punctuation performs on the page.

Formal example with boundaries annotated

यदि स्वतंत्र समीक्षा में यह पाया जाता है कि आँकड़ों का वर्गीकरण असंगत था, तो समिति संशोधित रिपोर्ट प्रकाशित करेगी; हालाँकि मूल अभिलेख सार्वजनिक नहीं किए जाएँगे।

yadi svatantra samīkṣā meṃ yah pāyā jātā hai ki ā̃kaṛoṃ kā vargīkaraṇ asaṅgat thā, to samiti saṃśodhit riporṭ prakāśit karegī; hālā̃ki mūl abhilekh sārvajanik nahīṃ kie jāẽge.

If the independent review finds that the classification of the data was inconsistent, the committee will publish a revised report; however, the original records will not be made public. (formal)

Annotated structure:

यदि [यह पाया जाता है कि [आँकड़ों का वर्गीकरण असंगत था]], तो [समिति संशोधित रिपोर्ट प्रकाशित करेगी] ; हालाँकि [मूल अभिलेख सार्वजनिक नहीं किए जाएँगे]

The comma closes the conditional frame, the semicolon separates a substantial concession, and कि, यदि … तो, and हालाँकि overtly mark the grammatical relations. Past था, future करेगी, and future passive किए जाएँगे reflect their own temporal meanings.

Common Mistakes

❌ मौसम खराब था, इसलिए शाम की उड़ान रद्द कर, दी गई।

Incorrect—the comma splits the compound predicate कर दी गई.

✅ मौसम खराब था, इसलिए शाम की उड़ान रद्द कर दी गई।

mausam xarāb thā, islie śām kī uṛān radd kar dī gaī.

The weather was bad, so the evening flight was canceled.

❌ मुझे विश्वास है, कि टीम समय पर पहुँचेगी।

Unnecessary separation—the कि complement is selected by विश्वास है and normally remains integrated.

✅ मुझे विश्वास है कि हमारी टीम समय पर पहुँचेगी।

mujhe viśvās hai ki hamārī ṭīm samay par pahũcegī.

I am confident that our team will arrive on time.

❌ फ़ाइल देखकर, कंप्यूटर बंद हो गया।

The comma cannot repair the dangling converb; this says that the computer looked at the file.

✅ फ़ाइल देखने के बाद मैंने कंप्यूटर बंद कर दिया।

fāil dekhne ke bād maĩne kampyūṭar band kar diyā.

After looking at the file, I turned off the computer.

❌ जो कर्मचारी देर से पहुँचे, वे चेतावनी दी गई।

Incorrect—the passive main clause needs dative correlative उन्हें as its recipient; the comma cannot make nominative वे fill that role.

✅ जो कर्मचारी देर से पहुँचे, उन्हें लिखित चेतावनी दी गई।

jo karmacārī der se pahũce, unheṃ likhit cetāvnī dī gaī.

The employees who arrived late were given a written warning.

Key Takeaways

  • Punctuation reveals clause boundaries; conjunctions, complementizers, correlatives, and non-finite forms establish grammatical relations.
  • A comma is useful after a long initial subordinate clause but is often absent before a short integrated final clause.
  • कि complements normally stay attached to the selecting expression; direct quotations have their own punctuation.
  • Semicolons coordinate substantial independent clauses, while full stops can still leave a discourse connector such as इसलिए active.
  • No comma can repair a dangling converb, replace a needed correlative, or force unrelated predicates into one tense sequence.
