Compliments and modest responses

A natural Hindi compliment does more than describe something as अच्छा “good.” It selects an appropriate object of praise, matches adjective and verb agreement, and positions the speakers socially. आप बहुत अच्छा गाती हैं praises a woman's skill with respectful plural agreement; तेरी जैकेट मस्त है belongs to a close (informal) relationship. Exchanging those frames without changing anything else alters the relationship, not just the grammar.

Receiving praise is also an interactional act. Hindi allows direct acceptance, modest downscaling, shared credit, and formulaic deference. Modesty does not require declaring the compliment false. A response can accept the goodwill while qualifying the evaluation: शुक्रिया, अभी और सीखना है “Thank you; I still have more to learn.”

Because compliments frequently contain predicative adjectives, review adjectives with होना when agreement rather than social calibration is the source of difficulty.

What to compliment, and how directly

Achievements, hospitality, clothing, and chosen possessions are relatively safe compliment targets. Comments on a stranger's body, age, marital prospects, or complexion can be intrusive even when the sentence is grammatical. Relationship and setting therefore license the speech act before any adjective does.

आपने आज बहुत स्पष्ट प्रस्तुति दी।

āpne āj bahut spaṣṭ prastuti dī.

You gave a very clear presentation today. (respectful/professional)

तुम पर यह रंग बहुत जँच रहा है।

tum par yah raṅg bahut jãc rahā hai.

This color really suits you. (familiar)

आपके हाथ का खाना लाजवाब है।

āpke hāth kā khānā lājavāb hai.

The food you make is outstanding.

The presentation compliment names a controllable accomplishment and gives specific information. तुम पर... जँच रहा है compliments the effect of clothing or color without evaluating the person's body directly. आपके हाथ का खाना is an idiomatic way to praise someone's cooking, not a claim about the literal hand.

At work, specificity often sounds more sincere than a large evaluative word:

रिपोर्ट में आपने आँकड़ों को बहुत आसानी से समझाया है।

riporṭ meṃ āpne ā̃kṛoṃ ko bahut āsānī se samjhāyā hai.

You have explained the figures very clearly in the report.

कमाल कर दिया यार—इतने कम समय में पूरा डिज़ाइन तैयार कर लिया!

kamāl kar diyā yār—itne kam samay meṃ pūrā ḍizāin taiyār kar liyā!

Amazing job—you finished the whole design in so little time! (informal)

The second example is emphatic peer talk. Address यार and the exclamation make it inappropriate as a default to a senior whom the speaker normally addresses with आप.

💡
A strong compliment is often specific rather than superlative. Naming the successful feature—clarity, timing, flavor, color, or effort—shows attention and reduces the risk of sounding formulaic.

Agreement inside the compliment

Hindi agreement can reveal what is actually being praised. In आपकी साड़ी बहुत सुंदर है, invariant सुंदर causes no visible change, but आपकी साड़ी बहुत अच्छी है has feminine अच्छी agreeing with साड़ी. When a skill is described through a habitual verb, respectful आप takes plural/honorific agreement regardless of one addressee's gender, while the participial predicate may still show gender where the construction requires it.

आपकी नई साड़ी बहुत सुंदर है।

āpkī naī sāṛī bahut sundar hai.

Your new sari is beautiful.

आप बहुत अच्छा लिखते हैं; मुश्किल बात भी सरल लगने लगती है।

āp bahut acchā likhte haiṃ; muśkil bāt bhī saral lagne lagtī hai.

You write very well; even a difficult subject begins to seem simple. (respectful; male addressee or mixed group)

आप बहुत अच्छा गाती हैं—आवाज़ में बड़ी मिठास है।

āp bahut acchā gātī haiṃ—āvāz meṃ baṛī miṭhās hai.

You sing beautifully—there is such sweetness in your voice. (respectful; female addressee)

The adverbial अच्छा in अच्छा गाती हैं is masculine singular by convention because it modifies the manner of singing, not the female subject. The feminine participle गाती agrees with the addressee. English does not show either contrast.

Four natural ways to receive praise

1. Accept the goodwill

Plain शुक्रिया or बहुत धन्यवाद is neither boastful nor cold when said warmly. It recognizes the compliment as a social gift.

आज का सत्र बहुत उपयोगी था। — शुक्रिया, यह सुनकर अच्छा लगा।

āj kā satr bahut upyogī thā. — śukriyā, yah sunkar acchā lagā.

Today's session was very useful. — Thank you, I'm glad to hear that.

2. Downscale without rejecting

बस, अभी, and कोशिश can limit the claim: “it was just an attempt,” “there is still more to do.” This is modest, but it preserves the other person's positive intent.

तुम्हारी हिंदी अब बहुत अच्छी हो गई है। — शुक्रिया, अभी और अभ्यास करना है।

tumhārī hindī ab bahut acchī ho gaī hai. — śukriyā, abhī aur abhyās karnā hai.

Your Hindi has become really good. — Thanks; I still need more practice. (informal)

3. Share credit

In collaborative work, redirecting part of the praise may be factually and socially appropriate. तो can contrast the individual's visible role with the team's contribution.

प्रोजेक्ट आपने बहुत अच्छी तरह सँभाला। — धन्यवाद, लेकिन यह पूरी टीम का काम था।

projekṭ āpne bahut acchī tarah sãbhālā. — dhanyavād, lekin yah pūrī ṭīm kā kām thā.

You managed the project very well. — Thank you, but it was the whole team's work.

4. Return warmth or invoke goodwill

यह तो आपकी मेहरबानी है is a courteous, Urdu-influenced formula that attributes the generous judgment to the complimenter (formal/polite). आपकी दुआ है credits the well-wisher's blessing and is natural in relationships where that idiom is established. It is not a literal denial of skill.

आपकी किताब ने विषय को नया नज़रिया दिया है। — यह आपकी मेहरबानी है।

āpkī kitāb ne viṣay ko nayā nazariyā diyā hai. — yah āpkī meharbānī hai.

Your book has given the subject a new perspective. — That's very kind of you to say. (formal/polite)

आप आज बहुत स्वस्थ लग रहे हैं। — बस, आप सबकी दुआ है।

āp āj bahut svasth lag rahe haiṃ. — bas, āp sabkī duā hai.

You look very well today. — It's thanks to all your good wishes. (male addressee)

💡
Modesty is an interactional balance: accept the speaker's kindness, then qualify the achievement or share credit if appropriate. A flat नहीं, बिल्कुल नहीं can make the other person defend a compliment they intended as warmth.

Formal and familiar exchanges

The following professional exchange keeps आप-level agreement and responds by recognizing institutional support:

आपने इतनी कठिन चर्चा बहुत धैर्य से सँभाली। — बहुत धन्यवाद। आपकी तैयारी के बिना यह संभव नहीं था।

āpne itnī kaṭhin carcā bahut dhairya se sãbhālī. — bahut dhanyavād. āpkī taiyārī ke binā yah sambhav nahīṃ thā.

You handled such a difficult discussion very patiently. — Thank you very much. It would not have been possible without your preparation. (formal)

Close friends can use exaggeration, यार, and मस्त without creating ceremonial distance:

यार, तेरी बनाई चाय एकदम मस्त है। — बस कर, अब रोज़ मत बनवा लेना!

yār, terī banāī cāy ekdam mast hai. — bas kar, ab roz mat banvā lenā!

Your tea is absolutely great. — Oh, stop it; just don't make me prepare it every day now! (intimate, playful)

The reply is mock resistance. A smile and playful contour are essential; a flat बस कर can mean “stop it” sharply.

Protective and culturally situated responses

Family members may follow praise, especially of a child, with नज़र न लगे “may the evil eye not affect them.” This is a protective formula, not a required component of Hindi compliments and not evidence that all speakers share one belief.

बच्ची कितनी प्यारी लग रही है—नज़र न लगे।

baccī kitnī pyārī lag rahī hai—nazar na lage.

The little girl looks so lovely—may no evil eye fall on her.

In some Muslim families and wider contact settings, माशाअल्लाह may similarly accompany admiration. It should be learned as a community- and speaker-sensitive formula, not inserted mechanically into every compliment.

Intonation changes the act

वाह, बहुत बढ़िया! with a broad enthusiastic contour is praise. A narrowed or exaggerated contour after an obvious failure can make exactly the same words sarcastic. Likewise, अच्छे लग रहे हैं is warm with falling affirmation, while a skeptical rise may sound surprised rather than complimentary.

वाह, बहुत बढ़िया! तुमने तो आज पूरा कमरा ही बदल दिया।

vāh, bahut baṛhiyā! tumne to āj pūrā kamrā hī badal diyā.

Wow, excellent! You have completely transformed the room today. (enthusiastic, informal)

Focus तो marks the result as exceeding an expectation; ही makes “completely/the room itself” emphatic. The praise comes from their interaction with context, not from वाह alone.

Repairing a socially risky compliment

A literal English compliment about appearance may be too personal in a first professional meeting. Redirect it toward a chosen item or relevant accomplishment.

आप आज बहुत आकर्षक लग रही हैं।

āp āj bahut ākarṣak lag rahī haiṃ.

You look very attractive today. (grammatical, but potentially too personal in a new professional relationship)

आपकी साड़ी का रंग बहुत सुंदर है।

āpkī sāṛī kā raṅg bahut sundar hai.

The color of your sari is beautiful. (safer professional compliment)

The repair changes the target of evaluation; it does not merely add जी or कृपया. Politeness is distributed across topic choice, pronoun, agreement, vocabulary, and delivery.

Common Mistakes

Rejecting praise so strongly that it rejects the speaker

❌ नहीं, आपको कुछ पता नहीं; मैंने बहुत खराब काम किया।

Overly combative as a routine modest response—it disputes the complimenter's judgment.

✅ शुक्रिया, मैंने पूरी कोशिश की; अगली बार इसे और बेहतर करूँगी।

śukriyā, maĩne pūrī kośiś kī; aglī bār ise aur behtar karū̃gī.

Thank you; I did my best, and I'll improve it further next time. (female speaker)

Copying English adjective agreement

❌ आपकी नई साड़ी बहुत अच्छा है।

Incorrect—अच्छा and the copula phrase must describe feminine साड़ी appropriately.

✅ आपकी नई साड़ी बहुत अच्छी है।

āpkī naī sāṛī bahut acchī hai.

Your new sari is very nice.

Pairing respectful आप with singular agreement

❌ आप बहुत अच्छा गाती है।

Incorrect—respectful आप requires plural auxiliary हैं.

✅ आप बहुत अच्छा गाती हैं।

āp bahut acchā gātī haiṃ.

You sing very well. (respectful; female addressee)

Making a stranger's body the compliment target

❌ आपका शरीर बहुत अच्छा है।

Grammatical words, but intrusive and socially unsafe as a compliment to an unfamiliar person.

✅ आपने आज बहुत बढ़िया प्रस्तुति दी।

āpne āj bahut baṛhiyā prastuti dī.

You gave an excellent presentation today.

Key Takeaways

Compliment choices depend on relationship, setting, and what is being evaluated. Specific praise of effort, skill, hospitality, or a chosen item is often safer and more sincere than a sweeping judgment. Receive praise by accepting its goodwill, then downscale or share credit if desired. Honorific agreement, address terms, particles, and intonation all shape whether the exchange sounds warm, distant, intrusive, or sarcastic.
