याद होना says that a person has something available in memory: literally, that the remembered item “is remembered to” the experiencer. English makes the rememberer the subject; Hindi normally marks that person with को and lets the remembered item control the forms of होना. This alignment belongs to the broader system of dative-experiencer predicates, not to an optional change in word order.
The dative experiencer frame
The neutral structure is experiencer-को + remembered item + याद + होना. Pronouns appear as मुझे, तुम्हें, आपको, उसे, हमें, उन्हें. याद does not change for gender or number, but the copula agrees with the remembered item.
मुझे दादी की हँसी आज भी याद है।
mujhe dādī kī hãsī āj bhī yād hai.
I still remember Grandmother's laugh.
क्या आपको याद है कि हमने टिकट कहाँ रखे थे?
kyā āpko yād hai ki hamne ṭikaṭ kahā̃ rakhe the?
Do you remember where we put the tickets?
A कि clause or embedded question functions as the content. Since a clause is not a feminine or plural noun controller, याद है remains singular.
Agreement belongs to the remembered item
| Remembered item | Present | Past state | Future / inference |
|---|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | याद है | याद था | याद होगा |
| feminine singular | याद है | याद थी | याद होगी |
| masculine/mixed plural | याद हैं | याद थे | याद होंगे |
| feminine plural | याद हैं | याद थीं | याद होंगी |
उसे पुराना कमरा याद था, लेकिन मकान का नंबर नहीं।
use purānā kamrā yād thā, lekin makān kā nambar nahīṃ.
He/She remembered the old room, but not the house number.
हमें स्कूल की वे लंबी छुट्टियाँ अब भी याद हैं।
hameṃ skūl kī ve lambī chuṭṭiyā̃ ab bhī yād haiṃ.
We still remember those long school holidays.
The first-person or honorific status of the experiencer never makes the copula plural by itself. In आपको वह बात याद है, singular feminine बात still selects है.
Simple state, habitual, and progressive
Simple याद है/था is the ordinary state. Habitual याद होता है describes what tends to remain accessible or what one recurrently remembers in a certain setting. The progressive याद हो रहा है is marked but possible when memorization or recovery is visibly developing.
| Viewpoint | Masculine singular | Feminine singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|
| simple state | याद है | याद है | याद हैं |
| habitual | याद होता है | याद होती है | याद होते / होती हैं |
| progressive | याद हो रहा है | याद हो रही है | याद हो रहे / रही हैं |
नए लोगों के नाम मुझे आसानी से याद नहीं होते।
nae logoṃ ke nām mujhe āsānī se yād nahīṃ hote.
I do not easily remember new people's names.
तीन बार पढ़ने के बाद अब मुझे पूरी कविता याद हो रही है।
tīn bār paṛhne ke bād ab mujhe pūrī kavitā yād ho rahī hai.
After reading it three times, I am now getting the whole poem into memory.
For a stable possession of knowledge, the progressive is unnecessary. Its natural domain is change toward knowing, not English I am remembering used loosely.
Perfective and change of state
Compositionally, होना supplies याद हुआ / हुई / हुए / हुईं, but bare eventive मुझे X याद हुआ is restricted in contemporary neutral speech. Sudden recall normally uses याद आना; successful memorization uses याद हो जाना. A past memory-state uses याद था/थी/थे/थीं.
दरवाज़े तक पहुँचते ही मुझे छाता याद आया।
darvāze tak pahũcte hī mujhe chātā yād āyā.
As soon as I reached the door, I remembered the umbrella.
दोहराते-दोहराते बच्चों को पूरा गीत याद हो गया।
dohrāte-dohrāte baccoṃ ko pūrā gīt yād ho gayā.
Through repetition, the children memorized the whole song.
The masculine छाता selects आया, and masculine गीत selects हो गया. Feminine बात would give याद आई or याद हो गई. None of these clauses takes ergative ने, because the experiencer is dative and the predicate is intransitive.
Future, subjunctive, and retention
Future होना agrees with the remembered item. Depending on context, याद होगा can predict future memory or infer present memory: “will remember” or “must remember.” याद रहना specifically profiles continued retention.
उसे यह छोटी-सी मदद कई साल याद रहेगी।
use yah choṭī-sī madad kaī sāl yād rahegī.
He/She will remember this small favor for many years.
शायद आपको हमारी पहली बातचीत याद हो।
śāyad āpko hamārī pahlī bātcīt yād ho.
Perhaps you remember our first conversation.
Subjunctive याद हो / हों follows possibility, wishes, and conditions. Because remembering is a mental state, a genuine imperative of याद होना is not normally available. Hindi instead uses jussive याद रहे “may it remain remembered,” or agentive याद रखिए / याद कीजिए.
बस इतना याद रहे कि दरवाज़ा नौ बजे बंद हो जाता है।
bas itnā yād rahe ki darvāzā nau baje band ho jātā hai.
Just remember this much: the door closes at nine.
Participles, related predicates, and causation
Useful non-finite forms include याद होने पर “when remembered / on becoming memorized,” याद होता हुआ in genuinely developing contexts, and more commonly याद रहने वाला “memorable / likely to remain in memory.”
वह सबको याद रहने वाला भाषण था।
vah sabko yād rahne vālā bhāṣaṇ thā.
It was a speech everyone would remember.
याद is the nominal element in several separate noun–verb predicates:
| Predicate | Meaning and perspective |
|---|---|
| याद होना | be present in memory |
| याद आना | come to mind, often involuntarily |
| याद रहना | remain in memory |
| याद रखना | keep in mind deliberately |
| याद दिलाना | remind someone |
याद दिलाना is the ordinary causative counterpart in meaning; do not mechanically causativize होना. It takes the person reminded with को and the reminder content as its other complement.
मुझे शाम को दवा लेने की याद दिला देना।
mujhe śām ko davā lene kī yād dilā denā.
Remind me in the evening to take my medicine. (familiar)
The idiomatic farewell याद रखना can also mean “do not forget me,” but याद होना itself remains a state predicate, not a vector or auxiliary.
Common Mistakes
❌ मैं उसका पता याद हूँ।
Incorrect — the experiencer of याद होना takes को.
✅ मुझे उसका नया पता याद है।
mujhe uskā nayā patā yād hai.
I remember his/her new address.
❌ मुझे वे तारीख़ें याद है।
Incorrect — plural तारीख़ें requires हैं.
✅ मुझे बैठक की दोनों तारीख़ें याद हैं।
mujhe baiṭhak kī donoṃ tārīxeṃ yād haiṃ.
I remember both dates for the meeting.
❌ मैंने उसका नाम याद था।
Incorrect — a past memory-state uses dative मुझे, not ergative मैंने.
✅ मुझे उसका नाम पहले से याद था।
mujhe uskā nām pahle se yād thā.
I already remembered his/her name.
❌ तुम यह नियम याद हो।
Incorrect — a mental state cannot be commanded with a bare होना imperative.
✅ तुम यह नियम याद रखो।
tum yah niyam yād rakho.
Keep this rule in mind. (familiar)
Key Takeaways
याद होना is an intransitive noun-plus-होना predicate with a dative experiencer. The remembered item controls है/हैं, past gender and number, and future forms. Use याद आना for sudden recall, याद हो जाना for successful memorization, याद रहना for retention, and याद दिलाना for causing someone to remember.
