होना honā: to be and happen

होना is not merely the Hindi equivalent of English be. It serves as the present and past copula, an existential verb, the eventive verb “happen,” a change-of-state verb, and the final auxiliary in layered predicates. Its present copula and past forms are suppletive, so a learner must know several form sets rather than derive everything mechanically from हो-.

Principal parts and argument frames

FunctionKey formTypical frame
infinitiveहोनातैयार होना “to be/become ready”
present copulaहूँ, हो, है, हैंवह तैयार है
past copulaथा, थी, थे, थींवह तैयार थी
perfectiveहुआ, हुई, हुए, हुईंक्या हुआ?
stemहो-होगा, हो रहा, हो जाए

As a copula, होना links a subject to a noun, adjective, or location. As an event verb it is intransitive: its subject is unmarked and no ergative ने appears.

आरव अभी घर पर है।

ārav abhī ghar par hai.

Aarav is at home right now.

पास में दवा की एक दुकान है।

pās meṃ davā kī ek dukān hai.

There is a pharmacy nearby.

In this existential use, होना asserts that something exists or is present. The entity introduced remains the grammatical subject and controls number: यहाँ दो दुकानें हैं “there are two shops here.”

कल रास्ते में क्या हुआ?

kal rāste meṃ kyā huā?

What happened on the way yesterday?

अगली बैठक शुक्रवार को होगी।

aglī baiṭhak śukravār ko hogī.

The next meeting will be on Friday / will take place on Friday.

The final example can describe the existence or occurrence of the meeting. English chooses be or take place; Hindi uses the same verb and lets the noun and context select the reading.

Present and past copulas

The present forms chiefly reflect person, number, and honorificity. The past forms reflect gender and number.

SubjectPresentPast masculinePast feminine
मैंहूँथाथी
तुमहोथेथीं
वह / यहहैथाथी
हम / आप / वे / येहैंथेथीं

मैं नई छात्रा हूँ, लेकिन मेरी बहन यहाँ पहले भी थी।

maĩ naī chātrā hū̃, lekin merī bahan yahā̃ pahle bhī thī.

I am a new student, but my sister was here before too. (female speaker)

Honorific singular reference uses plural forms: दादी घर पर हैं / थीं. The detailed distributions belong to the present copula and past copula pages.

Habitual, progressive, and perfective

Habitual होता does not replace simple है. It means “usually is,” “occurs,” or “comes to be.” Progressive हो रहा presents a developing event. Perfective हुआ presents a bounded occurrence or completed change.

ControllerHabitual presentProgressive presentPerfective
masculine singularहोता हैहो रहा हैहुआ

इस समय यहाँ बहुत शोर होता है।

is samay yahā̃ bahut śor hotā hai.

It is usually very noisy here at this time.

बाहर सड़क की मरम्मत हो रही है।

bāhar saṛak kī marammat ho rahī hai.

The road outside is being repaired.

गलती कहाँ हुई?

galtī kahā̃ huī?

Where did the mistake occur?

The passive translation in the road example comes from the noun-plus-होना predicate मरम्मत होना, not from a universal rule that होना equals English be + participle.

Future and subjunctive

The future and subjunctive use the stem हो- with characteristic stem extensions.

PersonSubjunctiveFuture masculineFuture feminine
मैंहोऊँहोऊँगाहोऊँगी
तुमहोहोगेहोगी
वह / यहहोहोगाहोगी
हम / आप / वे / येहोंहोंगेहोंगी

उम्मीद है कि यात्रा आरामदायक हो।

ummīd hai ki yātrā ārāmdāyak ho.

I hope the journey is comfortable.

Future होगा can also mark a conjecture about the present: वह घर पर होगा may mean “He will be at home” or “He is probably at home.” Context and time expressions distinguish them.

Imperative and non-finite forms

The bare imperatives हो, familiar होओ, and respectful होइए exist, but commands consisting of होना alone are limited and can sound elevated or formulaic. Everyday Hindi often prefers हो जाओ / हो जाइए for entering a state or रहो / रहिए for remaining in one.

चिंता मत करो; बस तैयार हो जाओ।

cintā mat karo; bas taiyār ho jāo.

Don't worry; just get ready. (familiar)

Common non-finite forms include habitual participle होता, perfective participle हुआ, conjunctive होकर, oblique infinitive होने, and prospective होने वाला.

सब कुछ ठीक होकर भी वह संतुष्ट नहीं था।

sab kuch ṭhīk hokar bhī vah santuṣṭ nahīṃ thā.

Even though everything was fine, he was not satisfied.

Auxiliary, compounds, and causation

As an auxiliary, present or past होना closes an aspectual predicate: करता है, जा रही थी, लिख चुके हैं. The lexical stem supplies the event, aspectual material shapes it, and होना supplies the temporal or finite anchor.

Compound हो जाना profiles entry into or completion of a state: काम पूरा हो गया “the work got finished.” These combinations are lexical and discourse-sensitive, not decorative substitutes for simple होना.

होना has no ordinary productive morphological causative such as an invented होवाना. Hindi usually uses a paired transitive predicate with करना: शुरू होना → शुरू करना, ठंडा होना → ठंडा करना. With manufactured results, another lexical verb such as बनाना may be appropriate.

💡
Learning होना means learning its argument frames as well as its endings. बैठक होना, गलती होना, ठंडा होना, and auxiliary कर रहा होना distribute meanings that English divides among be, happen, become, and auxiliary have/be.

An idiomatic discourse use is हो न हो, which marks a strong inference: “in all likelihood” or “chances are.”

हो न हो, चाबी दफ़्तर में ही छूट गई है।

ho na ho, cābī daftar meṃ hī chūṭ gaī hai.

Chances are, the key was left at the office.

Common Mistakes

Using होना instead of the present copula

❌ मैं तैयार होना।

Incorrect as a complete present statement — होना is the infinitive.

✅ मैं तैयार हूँ।

maĩ taiyār hū̃.

I am ready.

Regularizing the perfective

❌ बैठक समय पर होया।

Incorrect — the perfective is suppletive हुआ/हुई/हुए/हुईं.

✅ बैठक समय पर हुई।

baiṭhak samay par huī.

The meeting took place on time.

Adding ने to an intransitive occurrence

❌ दुर्घटना ने रात में हुई।

Incorrect — eventive होना is intransitive and takes no ergative ने.

✅ दुर्घटना रात में हुई।

durghaṭnā rāt meṃ huī.

The accident happened at night.

Using है for a recurring occurrence

❌ यहाँ हर सोमवार बाज़ार है।

Incorrect for the intended recurring event — use habitual होता है.

✅ यहाँ हर सोमवार बाज़ार होता है।

yahā̃ har somvār bāzār hotā hai.

A market is held here every Monday.

Key Takeaways

होना is highly irregular and multifunctional. Memorize its present copulas, past copulas, and perfective हुआ separately; derive future and subjunctive forms from हो-. It is intransitive as “happen/become,” can close a larger predicate as an auxiliary, and forms productive noun/adjective predicates whose argument frames are part of the lexeme's grammar.
