The subjunctive of होना is होऊँ, हो, हों, not a gendered set modeled on हुआ/हुई. An established shorter first-person variant, हूँ, also occurs; because it is identical to the first-person present indicative, the surrounding subordinate context must identify it as subjunctive. This guide uses the more transparent होऊँ as its default learner form. The subjunctive places a state, identity, location, existence, or auxiliary relation inside possibility, desire, purpose, or a condition: अगर वह घर पर हो “if they are at home,” मैं चाहता हूँ कि आप ख़ुश हों “I want you to be happy.” As an auxiliary, it can also put a completed, habitual, or progressive situation under uncertainty. For the mood's broader logic, begin with the subjunctive overview.
Compact paradigm
| Subject class | Subjunctive | Illustrative phrase |
|---|---|---|
| मैं | होऊँ | मैं तैयार होऊँ |
| तू / यह / वह | हो | वह तैयार हो |
| तुम | हो | तुम तैयार हो |
| हम / आप / ये / वे | हों | आप तैयार हों |
The second-person familiar and third-person singular forms both surface as हो. Pronouns, honorificity, and context identify the subject. The mood form itself has no gender contrast.
मेरी इच्छा है कि अगले हफ़्ते तक मैं पूरी तरह ठीक होऊँ।
merī icchā hai ki agle hafte tak maĩ pūrī tarah ṭhīk hoū̃.
My wish is to be completely well by next week.
हो सकता है कि वह अभी दफ़्तर में हो।
ho saktā hai ki vah abhī daftar meṃ ho.
They may be at the office right now.
मैं चाहती हूँ कि तुम इस फ़ैसले से ख़ुश हो।
maĩ cāhtī hū̃ ki tum is faisle se xuś ho.
I want you to be happy with this decision. (female speaker; familiar addressee)
ज़रूरी है कि आप बैठक में मौजूद हों।
zarūrī hai ki āp baiṭhak meṃ maujūd hoṃ.
It is necessary that you be present at the meeting. (respectful)
Identity, location, and existence
Copular होना can link a subject to a noun or adjective, locate it, or express existence. The subjunctive keeps the same semantic relation while changing its status.
अगर वह नया प्रबंधक हो, तो उससे समय लेकर मिलना।
agar vah nayā prabandhak ho, to usse samay lekar milnā.
If he is the new manager, make an appointment before meeting him.
अगर चाबी दराज़ में हो, तो मेरे लिए निकाल देना।
agar cābī darāz meṃ ho, to mere lie nikāl denā.
If the key is in the drawer, take it out for me.
देख लेना कि कमरे में पीने का पानी हो।
dekh lenā ki kamre meṃ pīne kā pānī ho.
Make sure there is drinking water in the room.
In the first example, masculine नया प्रबंधक supplies gender on the adjective नया, not on हो. Feminine चाबी still takes हो. The existential example has singular mass noun पानी; plural existential subjects normally select हों.
ध्यान रखना कि हर मेज़ पर दो गिलास हों।
dhyān rakhnā ki har mez par do gilās hoṃ.
Make sure there are two glasses on every table.
Masculine and feminine predicates
Although हो/हों do not mark gender, a variable adjective before them still agrees with its subject.
संभव है कि अमित अभी अकेला हो।
sambhav hai ki amit abhī akelā ho.
Amit may be alone right now.
संभव है कि नीरा अभी अकेली हो।
sambhav hai ki nīrā abhī akelī ho.
Neera may be alone right now.
संभव है कि दोनों बच्चे थके हुए हों।
sambhav hai ki donoṃ bacce thake hue hoṃ.
The two children may be tired. (boys or mixed pair)
The contrast अकेला/अकेली and plural थके हुए belongs to the predicate complement. Subjunctive हो/हों contributes person-number-honorificity and modal status, not gender.
Perfect and progressive subjunctive layers
When होना follows an aspectual participle, the participle carries gender-number agreement and हो/हों supplies the subjunctive layer.
| Layered form | Analysis |
|---|---|
| पहुँचा हो | masculine singular perfective + singular subjunctive |
| पहुँची हो | feminine singular perfective + singular subjunctive |
| पहुँचे हों | masculine/mixed plural perfective + plural subjunctive |
| पहुँची हों | feminine plural perfective + plural subjunctive |
शायद कुरियर पहुँच गया हो।
śāyad kuriyar pahũc gayā ho.
The courier may have arrived.
हो सकता है कि दोनों बहनें घर पहुँच गई हों।
ho saktā hai ki donoṃ bahneṃ ghar pahũc gaī hoṃ.
The two sisters may have reached home.
मुमकिन है कि टीम अभी अभ्यास कर रही हो।
mumkin hai ki ṭīm abhī abhyās kar rahī ho.
The team may be practicing right now.
Feminine plural uses nonnasalized गई before plural auxiliary हों, not standalone गईं हों. In कर रही हो, collective singular टीम is feminine singular. This layered structure explains why translating हो alone as English be can be misleading: here it marks mood on an already aspectual predicate.
Affirmative, negative, and question contrasts
संभव है कि निदेशक अपने कमरे में हों।
sambhav hai ki nirdeśak apne kamre meṃ hoṃ.
The director may be in their office. (respectful singular)
संभव है कि निदेशक अपने कमरे में न हों।
sambhav hai ki nirdeśak apne kamre meṃ na hoṃ.
The director may not be in their office. (respectful singular)
क्या यह संभव है कि निदेशक आज छुट्टी पर हों?
kyā yah sambhav hai ki nirdeśak āj chuṭṭī par hoṃ?
Is it possible that the director is on leave today? (respectful singular)
Negation न precedes हों. Initial क्या makes the matrix clause a yes–no question; the subordinate mood remains unchanged. In explicit negative conditions, नहीं हो/हों is also common.
An oblique participant may not control agreement
अगर मुझसे कोई ग़लती हुई हो, तो कृपया बता दीजिए।
agar mujhse koī ġaltī huī ho, to kripyā batā dījie.
If I have made any mistake, please tell me.
The semantic actor is “I,” but मुझसे is oblique. Feminine singular event noun ग़लती controls perfective हुई, and singular subjunctive हो completes the perfect layer. Neither first-person होऊँ nor masculine हुआ follows from the English subject.
Infinitive versus finite subjunctive
मेरे लिए समय पर तैयार होना मुश्किल है।
mere lie samay par taiyār honā muśkil hai.
It is difficult for me to be ready on time.
होना is an infinitive functioning as the subject of मुश्किल है. A desired finite state requires a personal form: मैं चाहता हूँ कि तुम समय पर तैयार हो. English to be can translate both patterns, so the clause structure—not the English wording—determines the Hindi form.
Common Mistakes
Building the form from the perfective
❌ संभव है कि वह अभी घर पर हुआ।
Incorrect for a current possible location — हुआ is perfective, not the simple subjunctive.
✅ संभव है कि वह अभी घर पर हो।
sambhav hai ki vah abhī ghar par ho.
They may be at home right now.
Using singular हो with respectful आप
❌ मैं चाहता हूँ कि आप ख़ुश हो।
Incorrect in careful respectful agreement — आप requires हों.
✅ मैं चाहता हूँ कि आप ख़ुश हों।
maĩ cāhtā hū̃ ki āp xuś hoṃ.
I want you to be happy. (male speaker, respectful addressee)
Giving हो a feminine ending
❌ शायद रीना घर पर होई।
Incorrect — simple subjunctive हो does not mark feminine gender.
✅ शायद रीना घर पर हो।
śāyad rīnā ghar par ho.
Reena may be at home.
Over-nasalizing a feminine plural participle
❌ शायद दोनों लड़कियाँ चली गईं हों।
Incorrect in contemporary Standard Hindi — before हों use गई.
✅ शायद दोनों लड़कियाँ चली गई हों।
śāyad donoṃ laṛkiyā̃ calī gaī hoṃ.
The two girls may have left.
Using the infinitive as the finite subordinate predicate
❌ मैं चाहता हूँ कि तुम तैयार होना।
Incorrect — होना is an infinitive, not the familiar second-person subjunctive.
✅ मैं चाहता हूँ कि तुम तैयार हो।
maĩ cāhtā hū̃ ki tum taiyār ho.
I want you to be ready. (male speaker, familiar addressee)
Key Takeaways
- Use होऊँ with मैं, हो with singular/familiar subjects, and हों with plural or respectful subjects.
- Subjunctive होना does not mark gender; variable complements and participles still do.
- Perfective, progressive, and habitual material can precede हो/हों in a layered subjunctive predicate.
- An oblique semantic participant does not replace the actual Hindi agreement controller.
