Subjunctive as irrealis

The Hindi subjunctive presents a situation without committing to it as an established fact. It appears in possibilities, wishes, purposes, open conditions, deliberative questions, and unresolved alternatives. “Irrealis” is a useful umbrella for these meanings, but it is not a promise that every unreal idea takes one form: Hindi also uses futures, imperatives, modal predicates, and counterfactual होता constructions. The basic personal endings are reviewed separately in present subjunctive personal endings.

The simple subjunctive marks person, number, and honorificity, but not tense or gender. Reference time comes from context, while an aspectual participle can be placed before subjunctive होना when the speaker needs to present a completed, habitual, or ongoing situation as nonasserted.

Assertion versus irrealis stance

Compare an asserted present state with the same state entertained as a possibility:

विवेक आज घर पर है।

vivek āj ghar par hai.

Vivek is at home today.

हो सकता है कि विवेक आज घर पर हो।

ho saktā hai ki vivek āj ghar par ho.

Vivek may be at home today.

The lexical proposition is constant. है commits the speaker to the state; हो सकता है कि...हो explicitly places it in the space of possibility. The subjunctive does not make the event “future” by itself.

Irrealis environmentExample shapeSpeaker's stance
possibilityहो सकता है कि वह आएarrival is entertained, not asserted
wish/blessingआप सफल होंdesired state
purposeताकि सब सुन सकेंintended outcome
open conditionअगर समय मिलेcondition left unresolved
deliberationमैं क्या करूँ?action under consideration
💡
Translate the stance, not merely the ending. A Hindi subjunctive may correspond to English may, should, let, would, a present form after if, or no separate modal word at all.

Simple subjunctive: open event, no aspectual viewpoint

Simple forms such as आऊँ, आए, आएँ, आओ identify the event but do not themselves say whether it is habitual, progressive, or completed. They also do not mark gender.

शायद निदा शाम की ट्रेन से आए।

śāyad nidā śām kī ṭren se āe.

Perhaps Nida will come on the evening train.

मैं खिड़की खोलूँ ताकि कमरे में हवा आए।

maĩ khiṛkī kholū̃ tāki kamre meṃ havā āe.

I'll open the window so that air can come into the room.

आपकी नई योजना सफल हो।

āpkī naī yojnā safal ho.

May your new plan succeed.

हम पहले किससे बात करें?

ham pahle kisse bāt kareṃ?

Whom should we speak to first?

The same morphology serves different discourse relations. शायद supplies possibility, ताकि supplies purpose, the blessing construction supplies desire, and the question supplies deliberation. It is therefore more accurate to describe a nonassertive mood than to search for one English “subjunctive tense.”

Respect remains grammatical number:

हो सकता है कि डॉक्टर साहब थोड़ी देर में आपसे मिलें।

ho saktā hai ki ḍokṭar sāhab thoṛī der meṃ āpse mileṃ.

The doctor may see you shortly. (respectful)

Here the singular honorific referent selects plural मिलें. Gender would appear on an adjective or participle elsewhere, not on this simple subjunctive ending.

Aspect can be embedded inside irrealis mood

When the uncertain situation has internal temporal structure, Hindi builds that structure before adding subjunctive हो/हों.

PredicateAspectual viewpointLikely interpretation
काम करता होhabitualmay habitually work / be someone who works
काम कर रहा होprogressivemay be working now
काम कर चुका होcompletive perfectmay have finished the work

हमें ऐसा सहायक चाहिए जो स्वतंत्र रूप से काम करता हो।

hameṃ aisā sahāyak cāhie jo svatantr rūp se kām kartā ho.

We need an assistant who works independently.

हो सकता है कि वह अभी दूसरे ग्राहक से बात कर रही हो।

ho saktā hai ki vah abhī dūsre grāhak se bāt kar rahī ho.

She may be talking to another client right now.

मुमकिन है कि दल रिपोर्ट पूरी कर चुका हो।

mumkin hai ki dal riporṭ pūrī kar cukā ho.

The team may have completed the report.

The relative-clause example does not assert that a known assistant has this routine; it specifies the desired kind of assistant. The progressive sentence opens an internal view of a current event. The completive sentence evaluates an attained endpoint. Subjunctive हो makes each layered proposition nonasserted, but it does not erase the aspect.

💡
Read a layered irrealis predicate from the inside out: lexical event → habitual/progressive/perfective viewpoint → subjunctive होना → the matrix meaning of possibility, desire, purpose, or restriction.

Timeline contrasts

The simple subjunctive commonly points toward an unresolved event at or after the relevant reference time. Perfective plus subjunctive होना looks back from that reference time to a possibly completed event.

हो सकता है कि इरा बैठक में आए।

ho saktā hai ki irā baiṭhak meṃ āe.

Ira may come to the meeting.

हो सकता है कि इरा बैठक में आ गई हो।

ho saktā hai ki irā baiṭhak meṃ ā gaī ho.

Ira may already have arrived at the meeting.

This minimal pair holds the participant and destination constant. आए leaves the arrival open; आ गई हो places a possible boundary before the current reference point. English uses may come versus may have arrived; Hindi expresses the contrast through aspect plus mood rather than through two unrelated tense forms.

A habitual layer can also be irrealis without being past:

अगर उसे वहाँ शांति मिलती हो, तो वह सुबह पुस्तकालय जाती होगी।

agar use vahā̃ śānti miltī ho, to vah subah pustakālay jātī hogī.

If she tends to find quiet there, she probably goes to the library in the morning.

The मिलती हो clause provisionally tests a recurring state. The main clause uses habitual plus inferential future जाती होगी. Neither participle is merely a past marker.

Perfective ergativity survives inside irrealis clauses

If the embedded proposition is transitive and perfective, ordinary ने and object-agreement rules apply even though the proposition is uncertain.

हो सकता है कि रिया ने पुरानी चाबी रख दी हो।

ho saktā hai ki riyā ne purānī cābī rakh dī ho.

Riya may have put the old key away.

हो सकता है कि रिया ने चौकीदार को बुला लिया हो।

ho saktā hai ki riyā ne caukīdār ko bulā liyā ho.

Riya may have called the guard over.

Unmarked feminine चाबी controls रख दी. In the second sentence, चौकीदार को is marked and cannot control agreement, so बुला लिया is default masculine singular. Subjunctive हो scopes over the resulting completed-event proposition; it does not change its argument structure.

By contrast, simple subjunctive रिया चाबी रखे is nonperfective and takes no ergative ने:

बेहतर होगा कि रिया चाबी सुरक्षित जगह पर रखे।

behtar hogā ki riyā cābī surakṣit jagah par rakhe.

It would be better for Riya to put the key in a safe place.

Negation and unresolved alternatives

Compact न is especially common in wishes, conditions, purpose clauses, and paired alternatives. Neutral नहीं can give the negative proposition greater independent weight. Neither is simply “formal” versus “informal.”

वह माने या न माने, निर्णय आज होगा।

vah māne yā na māne, nirṇay āj hogā.

Whether he accepts it or not, the decision will be made today.

ऐसा न हो कि आख़िरी बस छूट जाए।

aisā na ho ki āxirī bas chūṭ jāe.

Let's hope the last bus doesn't leave without us.

मुझे नहीं लगता कि वे आज तैयार हों।

mujhe nahīṃ lagtā ki ve āj taiyār hoṃ.

I don't think they are ready today.

The final pattern is possible in educated Hindi, though many speakers also choose an indicative or future form depending on how independently they present the embedded claim. Hindi does not enforce a mechanical “negative opinion always triggers subjunctive” rule comparable to rules taught for some European languages.

A short narrative: plans remain unreal until realized

संपादक ने कहा कि हम कल जल्दी पहुँचें ताकि अंक समय पर निकल सके।

sampādak ne kahā ki ham kal jaldī pahũceṃ tāki aṅk samay par nikal sake.

The editor said that we should arrive early tomorrow so that the issue could come out on time.

हो सकता है कि मुद्रक कुछ पन्ने पहले ही छाप चुका हो।

ho saktā hai ki mudrak kuch panne pahle hī chāp cukā ho.

The printer may already have printed some pages.

अगर सारी प्रतियाँ तैयार हों, तो हम उन्हें सुबह भेज देंगे।

agar sārī pratiyā̃ taiyār hoṃ, to ham unheṃ subah bhej deṅge.

If all the copies are ready, we will send them in the morning.

The first sentence uses simple subjunctives for an instructed arrival and intended outcome. The second changes to a completive layer because printing may already have reached an endpoint. The third tests a state as an open condition. Mood holds the propositions away from assertion, while aspect and context organize their temporal relations.

Common Mistakes

❌ हो सकता है कि सना कल आना।

Incorrect — आना is an infinitive; the embedded possibility needs a finite form.

✅ हो सकता है कि सना कल आए।

ho saktā hai ki sanā kal āe.

Sana may come tomorrow.

❌ शायद मीरा अभी काम करती हो।

Wrong for one event unfolding now — करती हो presents a habitual property.

✅ शायद मीरा अभी काम कर रही हो।

śāyad mīrā abhī kām kar rahī ho.

Perhaps Meera is working right now.

❌ संभव है कि नीलिमा पहुँच चुका हो।

Incorrect agreement — feminine नीलिमा requires चुकी.

✅ संभव है कि नीलिमा पहुँच चुकी हो।

sambhav hai ki nīlimā pahũc cukī ho.

Neelima may have arrived.

❌ शायद रिया ने चाबी रख दिया हो।

Incorrect — unmarked feminine चाबी controls the perfective vector दी.

✅ शायद रिया ने चाबी रख दी हो।

śāyad riyā ne cābī rakh dī ho.

Perhaps Riya has put the key away.

❌ बेहतर होगा कि रिया ने चाबी रखे।

Incorrect — simple subjunctive रखे is not perfective and does not license ergative ने.

✅ बेहतर होगा कि रिया चाबी अलमारी में रखे।

behtar hogā ki riyā cābī almārī meṃ rakhe.

It would be better for Riya to put the key in the cupboard.

Key Takeaways

The subjunctive is an irrealis mood, not an all-purpose future or a gendered past form. Simple subjunctives present an event or state without an aspectual viewpoint; habitual, progressive, and perfective participles can be layered before subjunctive होना when viewpoint matters. Context supplies reference time, while ordinary honorificity, case, ergativity, and agreement rules remain active inside the nonasserted proposition.
