Perfective of होना

The perfective of होना is the irregular set हुआ, हुई, हुए, हुईं. It presents an occurrence, development, or change of state as a bounded whole: बैठक हुई “the meeting took place,” काम पूरा हुआ “the work was completed,” वे ठीक हुए “they recovered.” Ordinary lexical होना is intransitive, so there is no ने and the unmarked subject or event noun controls agreement. This is the irregular counterpart of the regular patterns on the simple perfective formation page.

The compact paradigm

ControllerSimple perfectiveIllustrative phrase
masculine singularहुआकार्यक्रम हुआ
feminine singularहुईबैठक हुई
masculine/mixed plural or honorificहुएकार्यक्रम हुए
feminine plural, standaloneहुईंबैठकें हुईं

कल मोहल्ले में एक छोटा कार्यक्रम हुआ।

kal mohalle meṃ ek choṭā kāryakram huā.

A small event took place in the neighborhood yesterday.

आज सुबह हमारी पहली बैठक हुई।

āj subah hamārī pahlī baiṭhak huī.

Our first meeting took place this morning.

सप्ताहांत में दो सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम हुए।

saptāhānt meṃ do sāṃskritik kāryakram hue.

Two cultural events took place over the weekend.

इस मुद्दे पर कई लंबी बैठकें हुईं।

is mudde par kaī lambī baiṭhkeṃ huīṃ.

Several long meetings were held about this issue.

The perfective marks gender and number, not person. The event noun is the controller even when an English translation uses dummy there or a passive-like “was held.”

💡
Do not treat हुआ as an invariant word meaning “happened.” Ask what happened: masculine कार्यक्रम हुआ, feminine घटना हुई, masculine plural बदलाव हुए, feminine plural बातें हुईं.

Occurrence and change of state

Lexical होना can mean “happen/take place,” while a predicate adjective or noun can identify the result of a change.

रास्ते में अचानक एक दुर्घटना हुई।

rāste meṃ acānak ek durghaṭnā huī.

An accident suddenly occurred on the way.

इस बार कार्यक्रम पहले से बेहतर हुआ।

is bār kāryakram pahle se behtar huā.

This time the program turned out better than before.

Here bare हुआ evaluates how the event turned out. With a concrete change into a new state, everyday Hindi often uses हो गया instead: मरम्मत के बाद कमरा उजला हो गया “After the repairs, the room became bright.” The vector जाना makes reaching that new state especially explicit.

बारिश रुकते ही मौसम ठंडा हो गया।

bāriś rukte hī mausam ṭhaṇḍā ho gayā.

As soon as the rain stopped, the weather turned cold.

ख़बर सुनकर दोनों बहनें चुप हो गईं।

xabar sunkar donoṃ bahneṃ cup ho gaīṃ.

On hearing the news, both sisters fell silent.

In हो गया/हो गईं, हो- supplies the change/state relation and vector जा- carries perfective agreement. The compound is productive, but it is not mandatory after every use of होना: events naturally हुए, while state attainment often favors हो गया.

Simple, present-perfect, and past-perfect layers

FormTypical interpretation
काम पूरा हुआthe work was completed
काम पूरा हुआ हैthe work has been completed / is now complete
काम पूरा हुआ थाthe work had been completed / was completed earlier

नई व्यवस्था लागू हुई है।

naī vyavasthā lāgū huī hai.

The new system has come into effect.

हमारे पहुँचने से पहले बदलाव लागू हुआ था।

hamāre pahũcne se pahle badlāv lāgū huā thā.

The change had come into effect before we arrived.

Perfective हुई/हुआ gives bounded occurrence or change; present है makes the result current, while past था places it before a past reference point. Hindi builds these meanings in layers rather than changing होना into one English-style tense word.

💡
Distinguish lexical perfective हुआ from an auxiliary: in कार्यक्रम हुआ, it means “occurred”; in लागू हुआ है, present है is the later auxiliary that anchors the completed change to now.

Feminine plural before auxiliaries

Standalone feminine plural is हुईं. Before an auxiliary, contemporary Standard Hindi uses nonnasalized हुई and lets the auxiliary express plurality.

कल दो छोटी दुर्घटनाएँ हुईं।

kal do choṭī durghaṭnāẽ huīṃ.

Two minor accidents occurred yesterday.

इस महीने दो छोटी दुर्घटनाएँ हुई हैं।

is mahīne do choṭī durghaṭnāẽ huī haiṃ.

Two minor accidents have occurred this month.

जाँच से पहले कई ग़लतियाँ हुई थीं।

jā̃c se pahle kaī ġaltiyā̃ huī thīṃ.

Several mistakes had occurred before the review.

The guide therefore uses हुई हैं/हुई थीं, not हुईं हैं/हुईं थीं.

The semantic participant may not control

With accidental events, a person can appear in a से phrase while the event noun controls agreement.

मुझसे एक बड़ी ग़लती हुई।

mujhse ek baṛī ġaltī huī.

I made a big mistake. (literally, a mistake happened through me)

हमसे रास्ते में दो ग़लतियाँ हुईं।

hamse rāste meṃ do ġaltiyā̃ huīṃ.

We made two mistakes on the way.

English makes “I/we” the subject of make. Hindi मुझसे/हमसे does not control the verb; feminine ग़लती/ग़लतियाँ selects हुई/हुईं. This structure can soften agency, but its exact pragmatic force depends on context; it is not a mechanical “accidental voice.”

Affirmative, negative, and question contrasts

बैठक समय पर हुई।

baiṭhak samay par huī.

The meeting took place on time.

बैठक समय पर नहीं हुई।

baiṭhak samay par nahīṃ huī.

The meeting did not take place on time.

क्या बैठक समय पर हुई?

kyā baiṭhak samay par huī?

Did the meeting take place on time?

Negation and question formation preserve feminine singular हुई. The simple perfective has no auxiliary; adding है would create a present-perfect/result-relevant reading.

Infinitive versus perfective

बैठक का समय पर होना ज़रूरी है।

baiṭhak kā samay par honā zarūrī hai.

It is important for the meeting to be on time.

Here होना is an infinitive inside a larger copular clause. The completed occurrence needs हुई: बैठक समय पर हुई. The infinitive cannot replace a finite perfective merely because the context is past.

Common Mistakes

Regularizing होना from its visible stem

❌ कल एक दुर्घटना होई।

Incorrect — the feminine singular perfective is हुई.

✅ कल एक दुर्घटना हुई।

kal ek durghaṭnā huī.

An accident happened yesterday.

Using masculine singular for a feminine event noun

❌ हमारी बैठक कल हुआ।

Incorrect — feminine बैठक requires हुई.

✅ हमारी बैठक कल हुई।

hamārī baiṭhak kal huī.

Our meeting took place yesterday.

Losing plural agreement

❌ शहर में कई बदलाव हुआ।

Incorrect — masculine plural बदलाव requires हुए.

✅ शहर में कई बदलाव हुए।

Several changes occurred in the city.

Agreeing with the person in a से phrase

❌ मुझसे दो ग़लतियाँ हुआ।

Incorrect — feminine plural ग़लतियाँ controls हुईं.

✅ मुझसे दो ग़लतियाँ हुईं।

mujhse do ġaltiyā̃ huīṃ.

I made two mistakes.

Over-nasalizing before an auxiliary

❌ दोनों बैठकें हुईं हैं।

Incorrect in contemporary Standard Hindi — before हैं use हुई.

✅ दोनों बैठकें हुई हैं।

donoṃ baiṭhkeṃ huī haiṃ.

Both meetings have taken place.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn irregular हुआ/हुई/हुए/हुईं and make it agree with the unmarked event or subject.
  • Simple हुआ can express occurrence; हो गया often highlights attainment of a new state.
  • Present and past auxiliaries add result-relevance or earlier-past anchoring: हुआ है, हुआ था.
  • A person marked by से does not control agreement; the event noun still does.
