English know collapses three different relations. जानना treats someone as possessing knowledge or being acquainted with a person or domain. पहचानना means identify or recognize from prior exposure or distinguishing evidence. पता होना presents a fact, answer, location, or piece of information as available to an experiencer marked with को: मुझे पता है. The जानना reference, पहचानना reference, and पता expressions guide develop their individual patterns.
All three are neutral in everyday speech. The difference is not formality but semantic structure: knowledge held by an agent-like subject, recognition performed on an object, or information accessible to a dative experiencer. Complete conjugations of the two lexical verbs are linked; this page concentrates on deciding among them.
Three frames, three questions
| Choice | Core diagnostic | Typical syntax |
|---|---|---|
| जानना | Does the subject possess knowledge or familiarity? | subject + object / कि-clause + जानना |
| पहचानना | Can the subject identify something from cues or previous exposure? | subject + recognized object + पहचानना |
| पता होना | Is a fact, answer, or location available to someone? | experiencer-को + information + पता होना |
मैं अनिल को कई सालों से जानती हूँ।
maĩ anil ko kaī sāloṃ se jāntī hū̃.
I have known Anil for many years. (female speaker)
मैं अनिल की आवाज़ तुरंत पहचान लेती हूँ।
maĩ anil kī āvāz turant pahcān letī hū̃.
I recognize Anil's voice immediately. (female speaker)
मुझे पता है कि अनिल आज कहाँ है।
mujhe patā hai ki anil āj kahā̃ hai.
I know where Anil is today.
Knowing Anil personally does not guarantee recognizing every recording of his voice; recognizing him does not imply a personal relationship; knowing his location is simply possession of a fact. Hindi forces these distinctions where English repeats know.
A compact decision tree
- Is a person, language, subject, rule, or fact part of someone's knowledge? Use जानना.
- Is someone matching a face, voice, object, pattern, or name to a stored memory? Use पहचानना.
- Could the content naturally answer where, when, who, why, an address, or “Do you happen to know?” Use को पता होना.
- Did the information become known? Often use पता चलना “find out,” not stative पता होना.
- Are both जानना and पता होना possible? Decide whether to profile durable/claimed knowledge or simple access to the information.
Aspect matters too. Habitual जानता है expresses a stable knowledge state. Progressive जान रहा है normally means “is getting to know,” not English “is knowing.” पहचानना can describe a recognition event, while पता है is stative.
जानना: knowledge and acquaintance
जानना takes a knowing subject. It can select a direct noun, a specific person commonly marked with को, an infinitive skill, or a कि clause.
क्या तुम इस नियम को जानते हो?
kyā tum is niyam ko jānte ho?
Do you know this rule? (informal)
वह हिंदी पढ़ना जानती है, लेकिन अभी लिखना सीख रही है।
vah hindī paṛhnā jāntī hai, lekin abhī likhnā sīkh rahī hai.
She knows how to read Hindi but is still learning to write it.
हम अच्छी तरह जानते हैं कि यह रास्ता रात में बंद रहता है।
ham acchī tarah jānte haiṃ ki yah rāstā rāt meṃ band rahtā hai.
We know very well that this road stays closed at night.
With a person, जानना normally means acquaintance or fuller familiarity, not momentary visual identification. With a language, subject, or skill, it implies usable knowledge. Because it casts the subject as a knower, मैं जानता हूँ can sound firmer or more assertive than मुझे पता है, depending on tone.
Perfective मैंने जाना usually means “I came to understand/learn” rather than a simple past state. For “I knew her then,” use मैं उसे तब जानता था.
पहचानना: matching identity to evidence
पहचानना focuses on successful identification. A face, voice, handwriting, smell, route, pattern, or person can supply the cue. Prior exposure is normally presupposed, but personal acquaintance need not be close.
मैंने उसे मास्क के बावजूद पहचान लिया।
maĩne use māsk ke bāvajūd pahcān liyā.
I recognized him/her despite the mask.
क्या आप इस लिखावट को पहचानते हैं?
kyā āp is likhāvaṭ ko pahcānte haiṃ?
Do you recognize this handwriting? (respectful)
बच्चा अपनी माँ की आवाज़ पहचानता है।
baccā apnī mā̃ kī āvāz pahcāntā hai.
The child recognizes his mother's voice.
The vector लेना in पहचान लिया presents recognition as achieved. Simple पहचाना is also possible. Recognition can fail even when background knowledge exists: you may know a famous actor's work yet not recognize them in an old photograph.
पहचानना also extends to discerning a type or underlying nature: a doctor may लक्षण पहचानना “identify symptoms.” The same diagnostic principle holds—features are matched to an identity or category.
पता होना: information available to an experiencer
पता behaves as a predicative noun with होना. The person who has the information appears as a dative experiencer: मुझे, तुम्हें, उसे, हमें, आपको, उन्हें. Do not make that person a nominative subject.
क्या आपको स्टेशन का रास्ता पता है?
kyā āpko sṭeśan kā rāstā patā hai?
Do you know the way to the station? (respectful)
मुझे नहीं पता कि बैठक कब शुरू होगी।
mujhe nahīṃ patā ki baiṭhak kab śurū hogī.
I don't know when the meeting will start.
किसी को उसका नया पता नहीं मालूम।
kisī ko uskā nayā patā nahīṃ mālūm.
Nobody knows his/her new address.
In the last sentence, पता means “address,” while मालूम supplies “known”; Hindi tolerates this wordplay naturally. मालूम होना overlaps strongly with informational पता होना, often with a slightly more Urdu-associated lexical flavor but neutral everyday use.
पता है is especially idiomatic for practical, currently relevant information. It can soften the stance by presenting information as available rather than portraying the speaker as an authority.
Minimal pairs: the object stays constant
मैं उस आदमी को जानता हूँ।
maĩ us ādmī ko jāntā hū̃.
I know that man personally. (male speaker)
मैं उस आदमी को पहचानता हूँ।
maĩ us ādmī ko pahcāntā hū̃.
I recognize that man. (male speaker)
मुझे पता है कि वह आदमी कौन है।
mujhe patā hai ki vah ādmī kaun hai.
I know who that man is.
The first claims familiarity, the second identification, and the third factual knowledge of identity.
Facts permit genuine overlap:
मैं जवाब जानता हूँ।
maĩ javāb jāntā hū̃.
I know the answer. (male speaker; presents it as knowledge I possess)
मुझे जवाब पता है।
mujhe javāb patā hai.
I know the answer. (the information is available to me)
Both are grammatical. In a quiz, जवाब जानता हूँ can foreground competence; in a practical exchange, जवाब पता है is often less marked. Neither distinction is absolute, but the syntactic viewpoint is real.
Recognition and information can also meet without merging:
मैं गाना पहचानती हूँ, पर मुझे उसका नाम नहीं पता।
maĩ gānā pahcāntī hū̃, par mujhe uskā nām nahīṃ patā.
I recognize the song, but I don't know its name. (female speaker)
Learning or discovering new information
Stative पता होना describes the resulting availability of information. पता चलना profiles discovery; जानना in the perfective can profile coming to understand.
मुझे आज पता चला कि दुकान बंद हो गई है।
mujhe āj patā calā ki dukān band ho gaī hai.
I found out today that the shop has closed.
कई साल बाद मैंने उसकी कहानी का सच जाना।
kaī sāl bād maĩne uskī kahānī kā sac jānā.
Years later, I came to know the truth of his/her story.
The second sounds more reflective or literary (literary) than everyday मुझे सच पता चला. Register and event structure work together.
A dialogue: “know me” or “recognize me”?
निखिल: आपने मुझे पहचाना? — डॉक्टर: हाँ, आप पिछले महीने भी आए थे, लेकिन मैं आपको निजी तौर पर नहीं जानता।
nikhil: āpne mujhe pahcānā? — ḍokṭar: hā̃, āp pichle mahīne bhī āe the, lekin maĩ āpko nijī taur par nahīṃ jāntā.
Nikhil: Did you recognize me? — Doctor: Yes, you came last month too, but I don't know you personally. (respectful)
क्या आप मुझे जानते हैं? would ask about acquaintance and could feel socially presumptuous in this setting. पहचाना? asks only whether the doctor can match Nikhil to a previous visit. The lexical choice changes the relationship being claimed.
Common Mistakes
Copying the English subject into पता होना
❌ मैं जवाब पता हूँ।
Incorrect — the experiencer takes को, and पता remains the predicate with होना.
✅ मुझे जवाब पता है।
mujhe javāb patā hai.
I know the answer.
Using जानना for visual recognition
❌ मैं उस चेहरे को जानता हूँ।
Wrong for the intended recognition meaning.
✅ मैं उसका चेहरा पहचानता हूँ।
maĩ uskā cehrā pahcāntā hū̃.
I recognize his/her face. (male speaker)
Using पहचानना for personal acquaintance
❌ मैं सीमा को बचपन से पहचानती हूँ।
Wrong for ‘I have known Seema since childhood’; this foregrounds repeated recognition, not the relationship.
✅ मैं सीमा को बचपन से जानती हूँ।
maĩ sīmā ko bacpan se jāntī hū̃.
I have known Seema since childhood. (female speaker)
Using progressive जानना for a stable state
❌ मैं यह बात पहले से जान रहा हूँ।
Incorrect for stable prior knowledge — the progressive suggests a developing process.
✅ मैं यह बात पहले से जानता हूँ।
maĩ yah bāt pahle se jāntā hū̃.
I already know this. (male speaker)
Confusing पता होना with पता चलना
❌ मुझे कल से यह बात पता हुई।
Unnatural for ‘I found out yesterday’; use पता चली/पता चला as a discovery construction.
✅ मुझे कल यह बात पता चली।
mujhe kal yah bāt patā calī.
I found this out yesterday.
Diagnostic checklist
- Personal familiarity, domain knowledge, or knowing how? Choose जानना.
- Identification from a face, voice, sign, pattern, or prior encounter? Choose पहचानना.
- An answer, schedule, address, reason, or whereabouts available to someone? Choose को पता होना.
- New discovery rather than an existing state? Consider पता चलना.
- If both जानना and पता होना fit, do you want to assert possessed knowledge or simply report access to information?
The dependable distinction is relational: जानना links a knower to knowledge or acquaintance, पहचानना links an identifier to a recognized object, and पता होना locates information in a dative experiencer's awareness.
Key Takeaways
- Use जानना for knowledge, competence, and acquaintance.
- Use पहचानना for identification from prior exposure or evidence.
- Use को पता होना for accessible information and पता चलना for discovering it.
