पता होना and पता चलना

पता होना presents information as already available to someone: मुझे पता है “I know.” पता चलना presents a change into that state: मुझे पता चला “I found out.” The person who knows or discovers is normally a को-marked experiencer, not an agentive subject, because Hindi frames the information as accessible or newly revealed to that person.

English often uses the same subject-centered verbs know, learn, and find out. Hindi instead distinguishes a state, a nonagentive discovery, and active investigation. That distinction controls case marking, aspect, and the choice among होना, चलना, लगाना, and करना.

मुझे पता है कि आख़िरी बस ग्यारह बजे जाती है।

mujhe patā hai ki āxirī bas gyārah baje jātī hai.

I know that the last bus leaves at eleven.

मुझे कल पता चला कि आख़िरी बस का समय बदल गया है।

mujhe kal patā calā ki āxirī bas kā samay badal gayā hai.

I found out yesterday that the last bus's time has changed.

The first sentence locates knowledge in the present. The second profiles the boundary at which the information entered awareness. चलना does not mean physical walking here; the fixed predicate conceptualizes a fact becoming traceable or coming to light.

💡
If English find out can be paraphrased as “the news reached me / became clear to me,” choose को पता चलना. If the subject deliberately researched, called, or checked, choose पता लगाना or पता करना.

The experiencer takes को

The experiencer appears as मुझे, तुम्हें, उसे, हमें, आपको, उन्हें, or a noun plus को. Because it is oblique, it does not control the verb. An explicit unmarked content noun can control number and gender, while a following कि clause commonly gives default masculine singular पता है / पता चला.

क्या आपको उसका नया पता मालूम है?

kyā āpko uskā nayā patā mālūm hai?

Do you know his/her new address? (respectful)

उन्हें सारी शर्तें पहले से पता थीं।

unheṃ sārī śarteṃ pahle se patā thīṃ.

They already knew all the conditions. (respectful)

हमें असली वजह बहुत बाद में पता चली।

hameṃ aslī vajah bahut bād meṃ patā calī.

We found out the real reason much later.

In the last example, feminine वजह is the revealed content, so चली is natural. Compare default हमें बहुत बाद में पता चला कि..., where the following proposition is packaged as a single fact. Everyday usage sometimes favors default singular पता था/चला even near plural information; the safest edited form lets a clearly foregrounded plural noun control the copula—सारी बातें पता थीं—and uses default singular with a clause.

The noun पता also literally means “address, location, trace.” In उसका पता, context can mean “his/her address” or “his/her whereabouts.” पता होना therefore grows naturally from “a trace/location is available” to broader factual knowledge.

What can fill the content slot?

An answer, route, name, reason, schedule, location, or entire proposition can be known. Common patterns include:

  • X का पता होना — know X's address/whereabouts, or have information about X.
  • सवाल का जवाब पता होना — know the answer to a question.
  • पता होना कि... — know that/whether/where/why...
  • कुछ / कुछ भी पता होना — know something / anything.
  • पहले से पता होना — know in advance or already know.

क्या तुम्हें यहाँ से अस्पताल जाने का रास्ता पता है?

kyā tumheṃ yahā̃ se aspatāl jāne kā rāstā patā hai?

Do you know the way to the hospital from here? (informal)

किसी को नहीं पता कि फ़ाइल किसने हटाई।

kisī ko nahīṃ patā ki fāil kisne haṭāī.

Nobody knows who removed the file.

मुझे इस बदलाव के बारे में पहले से पता था।

mujhe is badlāv ke bāre meṃ pahle se patā thā.

I already knew about this change.

पता है? can also serve as an informal discourse opener, like “you know?” or “guess what?”: it claims the listener does not yet share the upcoming information. In formal prose, state the proposition directly instead of repeatedly using this conversational frame.

पता चलना: a fact emerges

पता चलना is nonagentive. It does not assert that the experiencer deliberately searched; a phone call, accident, report, or chance observation may reveal the fact. Sources can be added with से: रिपोर्ट से पता चला, दोस्त से पता चला, जाँच से पता चला.

रिपोर्ट से पता चला कि पानी पीने लायक नहीं था।

riporṭ se patā calā ki pānī pīne lāyak nahīṃ thā.

The report revealed that the water was not safe to drink. (formal)

तुम्हें मेरे आने का पता कैसे चला?

tumheṃ mere āne kā patā kaise calā?

How did you find out that I was coming? (informal)

सुबह तक चोरी का पता किसी को नहीं चला।

subah tak corī kā patā kisī ko nahīṃ calā.

No one became aware of the theft until morning.

The fixed phrase X का पता चलना often means “X becomes known/detected.” With people or missing objects, it may mean “their whereabouts are discovered”: लापता यात्री का पता चला. Context determines whether the result is a fact, detection, or location.

पता लगना is a common nonagentive alternative: मुझे पता लगा कि... / मुझे पता लग गया कि... “I found out that....” It substantially overlaps with पता चलना. Preferences vary by speaker and region, while पता चलना is an especially safe all-purpose choice in edited Modern Standard Hindi. Crucially, intransitive लगना still presents information becoming known; transitive लगाना presents deliberate investigation.

मुझे बाद में पता लगा कि बैठक रद्द हो गई थी।

mujhe bād meṃ patā lagā ki baiṭhak radd ho gaī thī.

I found out later that the meeting had been cancelled.

Compare मुझे पता लगा “it became known to me” with मैंने पता लगाया “I investigated and found it out.” Only the second has an agent and therefore takes ने in the perfective.

Active discovery: पता लगाना and पता करना

पता लगाना turns the search into an agentive accomplishment. The investigator controls the action and takes ने in the perfective. It often implies research, tracing, diagnosing, or uncovering. पता करना is common and neutral for checking a practical detail by asking, calling, or looking it up. In careful formal reporting, जाँच करना, निर्धारित करना, or जानकारी प्राप्त करना may name the method more precisely.

पुलिस ने कैमरों की मदद से गाड़ी का पता लगाया।

pulis ne kaimaroṃ kī madad se gāṛī kā patā lagāyā.

The police located the vehicle with the help of the cameras.

मैं फ़ोन करके पता करती हूँ कि दुकान आज खुली है या नहीं।

maĩ fon karke patā kartī hū̃ ki dukān āj khulī hai yā nahīṃ.

I'll call and check whether the shop is open today. (female speaker)

वैज्ञानिक यह पता लगाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं कि संक्रमण कहाँ से शुरू हुआ।

vaijñānik yah patā lagāne kī kośiś kar rahe haiṃ ki saṅkramaṇ kahā̃ se śurū huā.

Scientists are trying to determine where the infection began. (academic)

Compare the viewpoints: वैज्ञानिकों को पता चला reports what became known to the scientists; वैज्ञानिकों ने पता लगाया credits them with discovering it through action.

पता होना, मालूम होना, and जानना

मालूम होना overlaps closely with informational पता होना and takes the same dative experiencer: मुझे मालूम है. It is neutral throughout the Hindi-Urdu register continuum, though individual speakers may prefer one form. जानना instead makes the knower a nominative or ergative subject and can express durable knowledge, acquaintance, or learned competence. See the full choice guide.

मैं नियम जानता हूँ, लेकिन मुझे यह अपवाद पता नहीं था।

maĩ niyam jāntā hū̃, lekin mujhe yah apavād patā nahīṃ thā.

I know the rule, but I didn't know about this exception. (male speaker)

Here जानता हूँ presents command of the rule as part of the speaker's knowledge; पता नहीं था presents one missing piece of information. This is a difference of construal, not a rigid division between “deep” and “shallow” knowledge.

A short dialogue

आरव: क्या तुम्हें पता है कि मीरा किस होटल में ठहरी है? — सना: अभी नहीं। मैं कबीर को फ़ोन करके पता करती हूँ। — आरव: ठीक है, पता चले तो मुझे बता देना।

ārav: kyā tumheṃ patā hai ki mīrā kis hoṭal meṃ ṭhahrī hai? — sanā: abhī nahīṃ. maĩ kabīr ko fon karke patā kartī hū̃. — ārav: ṭhīk hai, patā cale to mujhe batā denā.

Aarav: Do you know which hotel Meera is staying at? — Sana: Not yet. I'll call Kabir and check. — Aarav: All right, let me know if you find out. (informal)

The dialogue moves through all three stages: a current knowledge state (पता है), a deliberate check (पता करती हूँ), and the possible arrival of information (पता चले).

Common Mistakes

Making the experiencer a nominative subject

❌ मैं उसका जवाब पता हूँ।

Incorrect — the person who has the information takes को.

✅ मुझे उसका जवाब पता है।

mujhe uskā javāb patā hai.

I know the answer to it.

Using होना for the moment of discovery

❌ मुझे कल पता था कि बैठक रद्द हो गई।

Wrong for ‘I found out yesterday’; था describes an existing past state.

✅ मुझे कल पता चला कि बैठक रद्द हो गई।

mujhe kal patā calā ki baiṭhak radd ho gaī.

I found out yesterday that the meeting had been canceled.

Giving nonagentive पता चलना an ergative subject

❌ मैंने पता चला कि ट्रेन देर से आएगी।

Incorrect — with पता चलना, use a को-marked experiencer.

✅ मुझे पता चला कि ट्रेन देर से आएगी।

mujhe patā calā ki ṭren der se āegī.

I found out that the train would arrive late.

Using पता चलना for deliberate investigation

❌ पुलिस ने चोर का पता चला।

Incorrect — an agent deliberately locating someone requires पता लगाया.

✅ पुलिस ने चोर का पता लगाया।

pulis ne cor kā patā lagāyā.

The police tracked down the thief.

Key Takeaways

  • को पता होना is a state: information is already available.
  • को पता चलना is an event: information comes to light for an experiencer.
  • ने पता लगाना profiles deliberate discovery; ने पता करना commonly means check or inquire.
  • Let explicit content nouns control agreement when foregrounded: वजह पता चली, बातें पता थीं.
