Hindi divides English pay attention, take care of, keep in mind, and be careful among several constructions built with ध्यान. The central contrast is spatial in its underlying image: X पर ध्यान देना directs attention onto a present target, while X का ध्यान रखना keeps watch or care of a person, thing, or future requirement.
Both expressions are neutral and frequent from conversation to formal writing. Their light verbs inflect, but their case frames remain stable. For full paradigms, consult देना and रखना.
The core contrast
| Construction | Core question | Normal frame |
|---|---|---|
| ध्यान देना | What are you focusing on now? | target-पर ध्यान देना |
| ध्यान रखना | Whose welfare or what requirement are you safeguarding? | person/thing-का ध्यान रखना; ध्यान रखना कि... |
| ध्यान में रखना | What consideration are you retaining mentally? | consideration-को ध्यान में रखना |
कृपया निर्देशों पर ध्यान दें।
kripyā nirdeśoṃ par dhyān deṃ.
Please pay attention to the instructions. (formal or respectful)
मैं बैठक में बच्चों का ध्यान रख लूँगा।
maĩ baiṭhak meṃ baccoṃ kā dhyān rakh lū̃gā.
I'll look after the children during the meeting. (male speaker)
ध्यान रखना कि गैस बंद हो।
dhyān rakhnā ki gais band ho.
Make sure the gas is turned off. (informal)
English uses pay and take, but Hindi does not pair ध्यान with literal equivalents of those verbs. देना conceptualizes directing attention toward a target; रखना conceptualizes maintaining care or a precaution over time.
X पर ध्यान देना: direct attention onto a target
The focus target normally takes पर. It may be a sound, detail, person’s words, problem, task, or abstract issue. In commands, ध्यान दीजिए is respectful and ध्यान दो is familiar; ध्यान दें is respectful, compact, and especially common in announcements and written instructions (formal).
ज़रा इस शब्द के उच्चारण पर ध्यान दो।
zarā is śabd ke uccāraṇ par dhyān do.
Pay attention to the pronunciation of this word. (informal)
सरकार को ग्रामीण स्वास्थ्य पर अधिक ध्यान देना होगा।
sarkār ko grāmīṇ svāsthya par adhik dhyān denā hogā.
The government will have to devote more attention to rural health. (formal)
मैंने उसकी बात पर ध्यान नहीं दिया, इसलिए तारीख़ ग़लत लिख दी।
maĩne uskī bāt par dhyān nahīṃ diyā, islie tārīx ġalat likh dī.
I didn't pay attention to what she/he said, so I wrote the date incorrectly.
In the simple perfective, the deliberate predicate is transitive: the subject takes ने, and masculine ध्यान yields दिया. The target marked by पर does not control agreement. ध्यान से is a related adverb meaning “carefully/attentively”: ध्यान से सुनो “listen carefully.” It modifies how an action is carried out rather than naming the target of attention.
पता ध्यान से पढ़ो; दोनों गलियों के नाम लगभग एक जैसे हैं।
patā dhyān se paṛho; donoṃ galiyoṃ ke nām lagbhag ek jaise haiṃ.
Read the address carefully; the names of the two lanes are almost identical. (informal)
X का ध्यान रखना: care for or be mindful of
With a noun, का/की/के agrees with that noun: बच्चे का ध्यान, दादी की सेहत का ध्यान, मेहमानों की सुविधा का ध्यान. The construction can express literal caregiving, protecting an interest, or remembering a practical constraint. Context determines which English phrase fits.
यात्रा के दौरान अपने सामान का ध्यान रखें।
yātrā ke daurān apne sāmān kā dhyān rakheṃ.
Keep an eye on your belongings during the journey. (formal or respectful advice)
वह काम के साथ अपनी सेहत का भी ध्यान रखती है।
vah kām ke sāth apnī sehat kā bhī dhyān rakhtī hai.
Along with her work, she also takes care of her health.
कमरा तय करते समय दादा जी की सुविधा का ध्यान रखना।
kamrā tay karte samay dādā jī kī suvidhā kā dhyān rakhnā.
When choosing the room, keep Grandfather's comfort in mind. (informal instruction with respectful reference)
This is not necessarily intense mental concentration. A host who मेहमानों का ध्यान रखता है looks after the guests; a designer who सुरक्षा का ध्यान रखता है accommodates safety requirements. ख़याल रखना is a very common near-synonym, particularly in everyday care and leave-taking: अपना ख़याल रखना “take care of yourself.” ध्यान रखना is equally neutral and can sound more task-oriented in instructions.
ध्यान रखना कि... and ध्यान में रखना
Without a genitive noun, ध्यान रखना कि + clause means “make sure / bear in mind that.” It points prospectively to a condition. In informal reminders, the infinitive ध्यान रखना itself works as an instruction; respectfully use ध्यान रखिए or ध्यान रखें.
ध्यान रखिए कि सभी पन्नों पर हस्ताक्षर हों।
dhyān rakhie ki sabhī pannoṃ par hastākṣar hoṃ.
Please make sure that all the pages are signed. (formal or respectful)
X को ध्यान में रखना more literally puts a consideration “in attention/mind.” It is common in planning, analysis, policy, and careful decisions (neutral to formal). Unlike X का ध्यान रखना, it does not normally mean physically care for X.
हमें बजट की सीमा को ध्यान में रखकर योजना बनानी होगी।
hameṃ bajaṭ kī sīmā ko dhyān meṃ rakhkar yojnā banānī hogī.
We will have to plan with the budget limit in mind. (formal planning context)
Compare बच्चों का ध्यान रखना “look after the children” with बच्चों की उम्र को ध्यान में रखना “take the children’s age into account.” The first protects participants; the second treats a fact about them as a decision variable.
Related attention predicates
Several frequent combinations are semantically close but not interchangeable:
- ध्यान लगाना — concentrate one's attention deliberately: पढ़ाई में ध्यान लगाना. Neutral.
- ध्यान लगना — attention becomes engaged, often nonvolitionally: पढ़ाई में मन/ध्यान नहीं लग रहा. Neutral.
- ध्यान हटना — attention shifts away.
- ध्यान भटकना — attention wanders. Neutral; common in speech and psychology writing.
- ध्यान खींचना / आकर्षित करना — attract attention; आकर्षित करना is more formal.
- ध्यान दिलाना — draw someone's attention to something or remind them; person-को, issue-की ओर/पर.
शोर की वजह से मेरा ध्यान बार-बार भटक रहा था।
śor kī vajah se merā dhyān bār-bār bhaṭak rahā thā.
Because of the noise, my attention kept wandering.
रिपोर्ट ने एक गंभीर समस्या की ओर सबका ध्यान खींचा।
riporṭ ne ek gambhīr samasyā kī or sabkā dhyān khīñcā.
The report drew everyone's attention to a serious problem. (formal)
याद दिलाने के लिए धन्यवाद; मैं इस नियम की ओर टीम का ध्यान भी दिला दूँगा।
yād dilāne ke lie dhanyavād; maĩ is niyam kī or ṭīm kā dhyān bhī dilā dū̃gā.
Thanks for the reminder; I'll also draw the team's attention to this rule. (male speaker)
ध्यान दिलाना is causative: someone causes another person to notice. It is not a replacement for ध्यान देना, which describes the noticing/focusing party.
A short dialogue
माया: प्रस्तुति देते समय किस बात पर सबसे ज़्यादा ध्यान दूँ? — समीरा: आँकड़ों की शुद्धता पर ध्यान दो, और समय का भी ध्यान रखना।
māyā: prastuti dete samay kis bāt par sabse zyādā dhyān dū̃? — samīrā: ā̃kṛoṃ kī śuddhatā par dhyān do, aur samay kā bhī dhyān rakhnā.
Maya: What should I pay the most attention to during the presentation? — Sameera: Focus on the accuracy of the figures, and keep the time limit in mind too. (informal)
The contrast appears within one situation: accuracy is a target for active focus, so it takes पर ध्यान देना; the time limit must be monitored throughout, so समय का ध्यान रखना is natural.
Common Mistakes
Translating English “pay” literally
❌ कृपया मेरी बात पर ध्यान चुकाइए।
Incorrect — Hindi uses ध्यान देना, not a verb meaning ‘pay money.’
✅ कृपया मेरी बात पर ध्यान दीजिए।
kripyā merī bāt par dhyān dījie.
Please pay attention to what I am saying. (respectful)
Using को for the focus target
❌ इस अंतर को ध्यान दो।
Incorrect — the target of ध्यान देना normally takes पर.
✅ इस अंतर पर ध्यान दो।
is antar par dhyān do.
Pay attention to this difference. (informal)
Confusing focus with caregiving
❌ मैं शाम तक तुम्हारे बच्चे पर ध्यान दूँगी।
Unnatural for ‘look after your child’; this suggests focusing attention on the child as an object of observation.
✅ मैं शाम तक तुम्हारे बच्चे का ध्यान रखूँगी।
maĩ śām tak tumhāre bacce kā dhyān rakhū̃gī.
I'll look after your child until evening. (informal; female speaker)
Omitting में from the planning construction
❌ हमें मौसम को ध्यान रखकर निकलना चाहिए।
Incorrect for ‘taking the weather into account’; use ध्यान में रखना.
✅ हमें मौसम को ध्यान में रखकर निकलना चाहिए।
hameṃ mausam ko dhyān meṃ rakhkar niklanā cāhie.
We should leave with the weather in mind.
