बात करना collocations

बात करना is the ordinary neutral way to say “talk” or “have a conversation.” Its literal pieces are बात “matter, utterance, point” and करना “do,” but Hindi organizes the conversation through a stable case frame: a person is normally marked with से, while a topic takes पर or के बारे में. Learning the whole construction prevents English-based combinations such as “talk to someone” with को.

This page treats बात करना and its closest बात collocations as constructions. General forms of करना belong in the करना verb reference.

The core frame: व्यक्ति से विषय पर बात करना

The most useful template is:

speaker + partner-से + topic-पर / topic-के बारे में + बात करना

से presents the other person as a conversational counterpart, not merely as a recipient. पर gives a compact “on the subject of” phrase; के बारे में explicitly means “about.” Both are neutral. In everyday speech, an obvious partner or topic is often omitted.

मुझे आपसे एक ज़रूरी बात करनी है।

mujhe āpse ek zarūrī bāt karnī hai.

I need to discuss something important with you. (respectful)

हमने किराए के समझौते पर काफ़ी देर बात की।

hamne kirāe ke samjhaute par kāfī der bāt kī.

We talked about the rental agreement for quite a while.

रिया अपने माता-पिता से नौकरी के बारे में बात कर रही है।

riyā apne mātā-pitā se naukrī ke bāre meṃ bāt kar rahī hai.

Riya is talking to her parents about the job.

With people, के साथ बात करना also occurs and highlights doing the activity together, but से बात करना is the unmarked, far more useful choice. को बात करना is not Standard Hindi for “talk to.” A message may be directed किसी को, but a conversation is conducted किसी से.

💡
Build the frame from relationships: the conversational partner is linked by से; the subject matter sits पर or के बारे में. English uses “to/about,” but Hindi does not translate those prepositions word for word.

Why करना becomes की in the perfective

बात करना is a noun-plus-verb predicate. In the simple perfective, a transitive subject takes ने, and the feminine noun बात normally controls agreement when no marked object intervenes: मैंने बात की, not मैंने बात किया. Plural बातें gives बातें कीं. In nonperfective forms, the verb agrees with the subject: वह बात करता है / करती है.

ShapeNatural formFunction
habitualवह बात करती हैshe talks / regularly speaks
progressiveवह बात कर रही हैshe is talking
simple perfectiveउसने बात कीshe/he talked
plural lexical nounउसने दो बातें कींshe/he said or discussed two things

कल मेरी डॉक्टर से बात हुई, फिर मैंने घर पर सबको पूरी बात बताई।

kal merī ḍokṭar se bāt huī, phir maĩne ghar par sabko pūrī bāt batāī.

Yesterday I spoke with the doctor, then I told everyone at home the whole matter.

Here मेरी डॉक्टर से बात हुई literally presents “my conversation with the doctor occurred.” This बात होना pattern is extremely common when the event, rather than the initiating speaker, is central. Since बात is feminine, the perfective is हुई. Compare agentive मैंने डॉक्टर से बात की, which foregrounds what I did.

बात करना, कहना, and बताना are not interchangeable

बात करना describes conversational activity, often reciprocal. कहना introduces words or content that someone says. बताना means tell, explain, or provide information to someone. The English verb talk can drift among all three, but the Hindi valency changes.

उसने मुझसे बात तो की, लेकिन यह नहीं बताया कि वह जा क्यों रही है।

usne mujhse bāt to kī, lekin yah nahīṃ batāyā ki vah jā kyoṃ rahī hai.

She did talk to me, but she did not explain why she was leaving.

उन्होंने साफ़ कहा कि फ़ैसला आज नहीं होगा।

unhoṃne sāf kahā ki faislā āj nahīṃ hogā.

They said clearly that the decision would not be made today. (respectful)

एक बात कहना “say one thing” is possible because बात can also mean a point or proposition. It is not the same construction as किसी से बात करना. Likewise, बात बताना conveys the content of a matter, not participation in a conversation.

Productive extensions with aspect and vectors

The core predicate freely combines with ordinary aspect. Several vector combinations add a conventional viewpoint:

  • बात कर लेना — get the conversation done, often for one's practical benefit; neutral and very frequent.
  • बात कर देना — go ahead and speak, sometimes promptly or on someone else's behalf; its exact nuance follows context.
  • बात करते रहना — keep talking.
  • बात करके देखना — try talking and see what happens.

These are productive verb combinations, not new idioms. The partner and topic retain the same case marking.

पहले मकान-मालिक से बात कर लो; शायद वह दो दिन और दे दें।

pahle makān-mālik se bāt kar lo; śāyad vah do din aur de deṃ.

Talk to the landlord first; perhaps they will give you two more days. (informal instruction; respectful reference)

तुम चिंता मत करो, मैं प्रबंधक से बात कर दूँगा।

tum cintā mat karo, maĩ prabandhak se bāt kar dū̃gā.

Don't worry; I'll speak to the manager. (informal; male speaker)

हम इस मुद्दे पर बाद में आराम से बात कर सकते हैं।

ham is mudde par bād meṃ ārām se bāt kar sakte haiṃ.

We can discuss this issue calmly later.

💡
बात कर लेना does not literally mean “take a conversation.” लेना packages the conversation as an accomplished step. Keep से and पर exactly as they are in simple बात करना.

Frequent collocations built around बात

Not every बात + verb combination means “talk.” Treat the following as separate high-frequency predicates:

ExpressionMeaning and frameRegister
बात होनाa conversation/discussion occurs; X-से बात होनाneutral
बात माननाheed someone's advice or request; X-की बात माननाneutral
बात समझनाunderstand the pointneutral
बात उठाना / छेड़नाraise / broach a topicneutral; छेड़ना can suggest a delicate topic
बात रखनाpresent a point, position, or requestformal or public discussion
बात बननाan arrangement succeeds; things work outneutral, often informal
बात बिगड़नाa negotiation or situation goes wrongneutral

मेरी बात मानो और आज थोड़ा आराम कर लो।

merī bāt māno aur āj thoṛā ārām kar lo.

Take my advice and get some rest today. (informal)

बैठक में नीलम ने बजट की बात उठाई, पर अध्यक्ष ने कहा कि उस पर कल चर्चा होगी।

baiṭhak meṃ nīlam ne bajaṭ kī bāt uṭhāī, par adhyakṣ ne kahā ki us par kal carcā hogī.

At the meeting Neelam raised the budget issue, but the chair said it would be discussed tomorrow. (formal workplace context)

अगर वे कीमत थोड़ी कम कर दें, तो बात बन सकती है।

agar ve kīmat thoṛī kam kar deṃ, to bāt ban saktī hai.

If they lower the price a little, we may have a deal.

Notice the literal-to-idiomatic shift in बात बनना. A “matter” does not physically become something; the expression means that the conditions align and an arrangement becomes viable. It is natural in negotiation and informal problem-solving, but a formal contract would normally state the exact agreement rather than rely on this conversational idiom.

A short dialogue

अंजलि: क्या तुम्हारी रोहन से बात हुई? — देव: हाँ, मैंने उससे तारीख़ बदलने के बारे में बात की। वह कल जवाब देगा।

añjali: kyā tumhārī rohan se bāt huī? — dev: hā̃, maĩne usse tārīx badalne ke bāre meṃ bāt kī. vah kal javāb degā.

Anjali: Did you get to speak with Rohan? — Dev: Yes, I talked to him about changing the date. He'll answer tomorrow. (informal)

Anjali chooses तुम्हारी ... बात हुई? because she asks whether the contact took place. Dev chooses मैंने ... बात की because he reports his deliberate action. Both use रोहन से / उससे, and the topic takes के बारे में.

Common Mistakes

Marking the conversational partner with को

❌ मैंने प्रिया को बात की।

Incorrect — a conversational counterpart takes से, not को.

✅ मैंने प्रिया से बात की।

maĩne priyā se bāt kī.

I spoke with Priya.

Using masculine agreement after बात

❌ हमने इस समस्या पर बात किया।

Incorrect — feminine बात controls perfective की.

✅ हमने इस समस्या पर बात की।

hamne is samasyā par bāt kī.

We discussed this problem.

Copying English “talk about” with के लिए

❌ हमें बजट के लिए बात करनी चाहिए।

Wrong for the intended topic meaning — के लिए means ‘for,’ not ‘about.’

✅ हमें बजट के बारे में बात करनी चाहिए।

hameṃ bajaṭ ke bāre meṃ bāt karnī cāhie.

We should talk about the budget.

Using कहना for a reciprocal conversation

❌ मैं कल डॉक्टर से आधा घंटा कहती रही।

Incorrect — कहना needs said content; sustained conversation uses बात करना.

✅ मैं कल डॉक्टर से आधा घंटा बात करती रही।

maĩ kal ḍokṭar se ādhā ghaṇṭā bāt kartī rahī.

I kept talking with the doctor for half an hour yesterday. (female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Use किसी से किसी विषय पर / के बारे में बात करना.
  • In the perfective, say ने बात की and बातें कीं; बात is feminine.
  • Use बात होना when the occurrence of contact matters more than who initiated it.
  • Keep conversation, utterance, and information distinct: बात करना, कहना, बताना.
  • Learn बात मानना, बात उठाना, बात रखना, बात बनना, and बात बिगड़ना as separate collocations with their own meanings.
