जानना jānnā: to know facts or people

जानना covers factual knowledge, knowledge of a subject, and familiarity with a person. English uses know for all three, but Hindi distributes nearby meanings among जानना, पहचानना, and पता होना. The spelling जानना contains the stem-final न plus infinitive -ना, hence the doubled n in jānnā; finite forms are built from जान-.

Principal forms and aspect

CategoryFormsTypical value
infinitiveजाननाto know / learn
habitualजानता / जानती / जानतेstable knowledge
progressiveजान रहा / जान रही / जान रहेgradually getting to know
perfectiveजाना / जानी / जाने / जानींcame to know, learned, experienced
conjunctiveजानकरknowing / after learning
prospectiveजानने वाला / वाली / वालेone who knows; about to learn

The masculine singular perfective जाना is written exactly like the infinitive जाना “to go,” but it belongs to a different verb here. The ergative subject and knowledge object or content make the reading clear: मैंने सच जाना “I learned the truth,” versus मैं घर गया “I went home.”

The habitual is the neutral present for a state of knowledge. A progressive is possible only when the context turns knowing into a developing process, especially “getting to know.”

क्या आप जानते हैं कि पासवर्ड किसने बदला?

kyā āp jānte haiṃ ki pāsvarḍ kisne badlā?

Do you know who changed the password?

नई टीम के साथ काम करते हुए मैं उन्हें बेहतर जान रहा हूँ।

naī ṭīm ke sāth kām karte hue maĩ unheṃ behtar jān rahā hū̃.

By working with the new team, I am getting to know them better. (male speaker)

💡
Do not copy English progressive am knowing. Hindi जान रहा हूँ needs a developing reading; stable knowledge normally has जानता हूँ.

Facts, subjects, and कि clauses

A known fact or answer may be an unmarked object: जवाब जानना, कारण जानना, सच्चाई जानना. A कि clause supplies propositional content. Indirect questions with कौन, क्या, कहाँ, क्यों, and similar words are equally common; Hindi does not move them out of their embedded clause.

हम जानते हैं कि यह रास्ता रात में बंद रहता है।

ham jānte haiṃ ki yah rāstā rāt meṃ band rahtā hai.

We know that this road stays closed at night.

क्या कोई जानता है कि आख़िरी बस कब निकलेगी?

kyā koī jāntā hai ki āxirī bas kab niklegī?

Does anyone know when the last bus will leave?

Knowing a domain often uses a direct noun or के बारे में: हिंदी जानना “know Hindi,” कानून जानना “know the law,” and इस विषय के बारे में जानना “know about this subject.” With skills, जानना means possess the relevant knowledge, not merely recognize the label.

वह तीन भाषाएँ जानती है, लेकिन दफ़्तर में हिंदी बोलती है।

vah tīn bhāṣāẽ jāntī hai, lekin daftar meṃ hindī boltī hai.

She knows three languages but speaks Hindi at the office.

वह हिंदी पढ़ना जानती है, पर अभी लिखना सीख रही है।

vah hindī paṛhnā jāntī hai, par abhī likhnā sīkh rahī hai.

She knows how to read Hindi but is still learning to write it.

Knowing a person

A familiar person is normally specific and therefore commonly takes को. The source or setting of the acquaintance can be added with से.

मैं अंजलि को कॉलेज के दिनों से जानती हूँ।

maĩ añjali ko kolej ke dinoṃ se jāntī hū̃.

I have known Anjali since our college days. (female speaker)

Here जानना means sustained familiarity, not the ability to identify Anjali's face. English know someone encourages learners to overlook this difference.

जानना, पहचानना, and पता होना

The three-way choice guide develops the contrast fully:

ExpressionCore meaningNatural example
जाननाpossess knowledge; be acquainted withमैं नियम जानता हूँ।
पहचाननाidentify from prior exposure or distinctive cuesमैं आवाज़ पहचानता हूँ।
पता होनाa fact, location, or answer is known to someoneमुझे पता है।

मैं उस गायक का नाम नहीं जानती, पर उसकी आवाज़ पहचानती हूँ।

maĩ us gāyak kā nām nahīṃ jāntī, par uskī āvāz pahcāntī hū̃.

I don't know that singer's name, but I recognize his voice. (female speaker)

मुझे पता है कि... is especially idiomatic for one accessible fact. मैं जानता हूँ कि... is also grammatical but can sound more assertive, presenting the speaker as possessing knowledge rather than simply reporting that the information is available.

Perfective transitivity and agreement

जानना is transitive. In the simple perfective, an agent normally takes ने. An unmarked object can control agreement; a को-marked person or a clausal complement blocks it, leaving default masculine singular जाना. Perfective जानना often means “learned, discovered, came to understand,” because a timeless state is more naturally expressed by जानता था.

जाँच के बाद अधिकारियों ने पूरी सच्चाई जानी।

jā̃c ke bād adhikāriyoṃ ne pūrī saccāī jānī.

After the investigation, the officials learned the whole truth.

इन वर्षों में मैंने उसे धीरे-धीरे जाना।

in varṣoṃ meṃ maĩne use dhīre-dhīre jānā.

Over these years, I gradually came to know him/her.

💡
For a past state, prefer मैं उसे जानता था “I knew him.” मैंने उसे जाना presents an achieved or deepened acquaintance: “I came to know him.”

Future, subjunctive, and imperatives

रिपोर्ट सार्वजनिक होगी तो हम असली कारण जानेंगे।

riporṭ sārvajanik hogī to ham aslī kāraṇ jāneṅge.

When the report is made public, we will learn the real reason.

मैं चाहता हूँ कि आप पूरी बात जानें।

maĩ cāhtā hū̃ ki āp pūrī bāt jāneṃ.

I want you to know the whole story. (male speaker)

Imperatives are जान, जानो, and जानिए, but a bare order to know something is semantically odd. Natural directives use जान लो “find out / understand this” or पता करो “find out.” Participles include जानता हुआ, जाना हुआ, and जानने वाला; fixed जाना-पहचाना means familiar or well known.

पहले यह जान लो कि फ़ॉर्म जमा करने की आख़िरी तारीख़ क्या है।

pahle yah jān lo ki form jamā karne kī āxirī tārīx kyā hai.

First find out what the deadline for submitting the form is. (familiar)

Compounds, causation, and an idiom

जान लेना presents obtaining knowledge as complete or personally secured. जान पाना means manage to learn or determine, often under difficulty. These are lexical combinations, not freely interchangeable tense forms.

इतनी भीड़ में हम यह नहीं जान पाए कि आवाज़ कहाँ से आई।

itnī bhīṛ meṃ ham yah nahīṃ jān pāe ki āvāz kahā̃ se āī.

In such a crowd, we couldn't determine where the sound came from.

Modern neutral Hindi does not ordinarily form a useful everyday causative by mechanically changing जानना to जनाना. Use बताना for tell, जानकारी देना for provide information, and सूचित करना (formal) for notify. Lexical grammar therefore matters as much as the endings.

The frozen pairing जान-बूझकर means deliberately, with full awareness.

उसने जान-बूझकर बैठक का समय नहीं बताया।

usne jān-būjhkar baiṭhak kā samay nahīṃ batāyā.

He/She deliberately did not disclose the meeting time.

Common Mistakes

❌ मैं इस सवाल को पता हूँ।

Incorrect — पता होना uses a dative experiencer, not an English-style knowing subject.

✅ मुझे इस सवाल का जवाब पता है।

mujhe is savāl kā javāb patā hai.

I know the answer to this question.

❌ मैं उसका चेहरा जानता हूँ।

Incorrect for visual recognition — use पहचानना.

✅ मैं उसका चेहरा तुरंत पहचान लेता हूँ।

maĩ uskā cehrā turant pahcān letā hū̃.

I recognize his/her face immediately. (male speaker)

❌ जाँच में हमने कई नई बातें जाना।

Incorrect — the unmarked feminine plural object controls जानीं.

✅ जाँच में हमने कई नई बातें जानीं।

jā̃c meṃ hamne kaī naī bāteṃ jānīṃ.

During the inquiry, we learned several new facts.

❌ मैं उसे दस साल से जान रहा हूँ।

Incorrect for the intended stable state — the progressive suggests an ongoing process of getting acquainted.

✅ मैं उसे दस साल से जानता हूँ।

maĩ use das sāl se jāntā hū̃.

I have known him/her for ten years. (male speaker)

💡
Translate the relation, not merely English know: facts and people often take जानना, identification takes पहचानना, and accessible information often takes को + पता होना.

Key Takeaways

जानना is a transitive knowledge verb with stem जान-. Its habitual expresses stable knowledge, while progressive and perfective forms usually develop “getting to know” or “coming to learn” readings. Learn its complement frames and the compounds जान लेना and जान पाना, and do not invent a productive everyday causative.
