English keeps the same subject form in Maya opens the window and Maya opened the window. Neutral Standard Hindi changes the alignment of a canonical active transitive clause in the perfective: माया खिड़की खोलती है, but माया ने खिड़की खोली. Omitting ने from the second frame is not merely forgetting a detachable word; it breaks the case-and-agreement package selected by perfective aspect and transitivity.
This page repairs the omission. For the whole system, including lexical variation, see ने as a perfective ergative marker. The compact prevention test is active + transitive + perfective = mark the agent with ने, unless the predicate belongs to a known exceptional or variable class.
Error, intended meaning, and what a listener hears
माया ने खिड़की धीरे से बंद की।
māyā ne khiṛkī dhīre se band kī.
Maya closed the window gently.
The agent intentionally acts on a direct object, and बंद की presents that action as bounded. Without ने, a listener will probably reconstruct the intended event from vocabulary, but the unmarked subject conflicts with the canonical perfective-transitive frame. The sentence may sound nonstandard, regionally colored, or simply learner-like; it does not become a harmless colloquial shortcut in the neutral standard taught here.
The omission can also obscure the agreement controller. Once माया is marked by ने, it cannot control the perfective. Unmarked feminine खिड़की controls की. A repair therefore needs two steps: add ने, then check the object.
The three-part diagnosis
Ask three questions about the Hindi predicate:
- Perfective? Forms such as पिया, लिखी, भेज दिए, पढ़ा है present a bounded event.
- Transitive? Does an agent act on a direct object, expressed or recoverable?
- Active? Is that agent the syntactic subject rather than an agent phrase inside a passive?
If all three answers are yes, canonical ने is required.
अमन ने सारा दूध पी लिया।
aman ne sārā dūdh pī liyā.
Aman drank all the milk.
कर्मचारियों ने शाम तक सारी मेज़ें हटाईं।
karmacāriyoṃ ne śām tak sārī mezeṃ haṭāīṃ.
The employees removed all the tables by evening.
The compound पी लिया and simple perfective हटाईं behave alike for ergativity. In the second sentence, feminine plural मेज़ें controls standalone हटाईं.
Present है/हैं does not cancel perfectivity:
सोनिया ने रसीद संभालकर रखी है।
soniyā ne rasīd sambhālkar rakhī hai.
Sonia has kept the receipt safely.
The clause is a present perfect, but its lexical event is perfective and transitive. Learners who equate ने with English past tense often omit it when they see present है. Aspect, not the tense of the final auxiliary, licenses ने.
Agreement after the repair
With a ने-marked agent, an unmarked direct object can control the perfective. A को-marked object cannot, so the predicate normally defaults to masculine singular.
नीला ने नई कहानी लिखी।
nīlā ne naī kahānī likhī.
Neela wrote a new story.
नीला ने सहायक को जवाब भेजने को कहा।
nīlā ne sahāyak ko javāb bhejne ko kahā.
Neela told the assistant to send the reply.
In the first, unmarked feminine कहानी gives लिखी. In the second, the content clause and its marked participant do not supply an eligible agreement controller, so कहा is default masculine singular. The gender of नीला does not select either form.
Near-exceptions: do not overcorrect
The three-part rule deliberately excludes ordinary intransitive perfectives, passives, experiencer clauses, and obligation frames.
मेहमान देर से पहुँचे, और मुझे खाना फिर से गरम करना पड़ा।
mehmān der se pahũce, aur mujhe khānā phir se garam karnā paṛā.
The guests arrived late, and I had to heat the food again.
पहुँचना is intransitive; obligation मुझे ... पड़ा uses a dative obligor. Neither takes ने here.
One high-frequency lexical exception must be learned: simple perfective लाना “bring” normally has an unmarked subject in neutral Standard Hindi.
नीलम नया नक्शा लाई।
nīlam nayā nakśā lāī.
Neelam brought a new map.
नीलम ने नया नक्शा लिया।
nīlam ne nayā nakśā liyā.
Neelam took or bought a new map.
The masculine object नया नक्शा makes the contrast visible. Exceptional लाना has no ने, so feminine subject नीलम controls लाई. Ordinary transitive perfective लेना requires ने, and the unmarked masculine object controls लिया. The two predicates also differ in meaning: “bring” versus “take/buy.”
Some uses of भूलना, समझना, and बोलना vary by construction, register, or region. That honest irregular zone must be learned predicate by predicate; it does not make ने optional with canonical verbs such as खोलना, लिखना, or पढ़ना.
A short corrected dialogue turn
अ: चाय किसने बनाई? ब: नेहा ने बनाई, और विवेक ने नाश्ता तैयार किया।
a: cāy kisne banāī? ba: nehā ne banāī, aur vivek ne nāśtā taiyār kiyā.
A: Who made the tea? B: Neha did, and Vivek prepared breakfast.
The omitted object चाय remains recoverable and controls बनाई. Both agents take ने, while masculine नाश्ता controls किया.
Common Mistakes
❌ सारा ने पूरी रिपोर्ट लिखी।
Incorrect in neutral Standard Hindi—the active agent of this transitive perfective requires ने.
✅ सारा ने पूरी रिपोर्ट रात में लिखी।
sārā ne pūrī riporṭ rāt meṃ likhī.
Sara wrote the entire report during the night.
❌ हम सारे टिकट ख़रीद लिए।
Incorrect—a completed active purchase is transitive, so the plural agent must be हमने.
✅ हमने यात्रा के सारे टिकट ख़रीद लिए।
hamne yātrā ke sāre ṭikaṭ xarīd lie.
We bought all the tickets for the trip.
❌ मैं यह दवा पहले भी ली है।
Incorrect—the present auxiliary does not remove ergative ने from a transitive present perfect.
✅ मैंने यह दवा पहले भी ली है।
maĩne yah davā pahle bhī lī hai.
I have taken this medicine before.
❌ मीरा उस बच्चे को बुलाया।
Incorrect in the intended canonical active perfective—specific object बच्चे को does not remove the agent's ने.
✅ मीरा ने बाहर खेल रहे बच्चे को बुलाया।
mīrā ne bāhar khel rahe bacce ko bulāyā.
Meera called the child who was playing outside.
Quick self-check
Underline the lexical predicate, not the English tense. If it is active, transitive, and perfective, mark its agent with ने. Then locate an unmarked object for agreement; if the object is को-marked or absent, use the ordinary default pattern. Finally, check whether the verb is a genuine lexical exception rather than assuming free variation.
Key Takeaways
- Canonical active transitive perfectives require ने, including compounds and present perfects.
- Adding ने changes the agreement hierarchy; repair case and agreement together.
- Intransitives, passives, dative frames, and exceptional लाना prevent overcorrection.
- English unchanged subjects are the transfer source, but Hindi aspect and argument structure choose the frame.
