Adding ने to every past-tense clause

After learning मैंने खाना खाया, learners often reinterpret ने as Hindi for “past tense” and add it to every earlier event. That produces errors such as ❌ रीना ने आई and ❌ उसने सो रहा था. Hindi ने is not a tense word: in the canonical system it marks the agent of an active transitive perfective.

The correction is to analyze three dimensions independently—aspect, transitivity, and voice. Past time alone decides none of them. The full distribution belongs to ने as a perfective ergative marker; this page trains the removal test.

Error, intended meaning, and what a listener hears

रीना सुबह छह बजे उठी।

rīnā subah chah baje uṭhī.

Reena got up at six in the morning.

उठना is intransitive here: one participant changes posture, and there is no direct object. If a learner says रीना ने उठी, a listener encounters an ergative agent marker that predicts a transitive perfective frame, but the predicate supplies no patient. The event remains guessable, yet the grammar sets up an argument that never arrives.

The mismatch can also disrupt agreement. Unmarked रीना correctly controls feminine उठी. Adding ने would block that subject agreement without providing an object controller.

💡
Past time is only a timeline fact. Before using ने, demand all three grammatical properties: perfective viewpoint, transitive predicate, and active voice.

Past does not always mean perfective

Habitual and progressive clauses can be past without being perfective. Their unmarked subject controls the participle and auxiliary.

समीर बचपन में रोज़ कहानियाँ पढ़ता था।

samīr bacpan meṃ roz kahāniyā̃ paṛhtā thā.

Sameer used to read stories every day as a child.

अनिता तब ग्राहक से बात कर रही थी।

anitā tab grāhak se bāt kar rahī thī.

Anita was speaking with a client then.

Both clauses describe the past. Neither presents the lexical event as a bounded perfective whole. The transitive object कहानियाँ in the habitual does not license ने, because transitivity alone is insufficient.

Future and ordinary subjunctive forms likewise take no ergative ने:

विवेक कल सारी फ़ाइलें भेजेगा।

vivek kal sārī fāileṃ bhejegā.

Vivek will send all the files tomorrow.

English-speaking learners sometimes associate an overt case marker with “did” and then extend it to any finite time. Hindi does not have that mapping.

Perfective clauses that still have no ने

Ordinary intransitive perfectives keep an unmarked subject and agree with it.

दोनों बसें समय पर पहुँचीं।

donoṃ baseṃ samay par pahũcīṃ.

Both buses arrived on time.

बारिश में पुरानी दीवार गिर गई।

bāriś meṃ purānī dīvār gir gaī.

The old wall collapsed in the rain.

Arrival and spontaneous falling are bounded, but they do not contain a canonical agent acting on a direct object. Feminine बसें and दीवार control the perfectives.

A passive also has no ergative grammatical subject:

मुख्य दरवाज़ा दस बजे बंद किया गया।

mukhya darvāzā das baje band kiyā gayā.

The main door was closed at ten o'clock. (neutral/formal passive)

An expressed passive agent may use के द्वारा (formal) or sometimes से. It does not become a ने-marked active subject.

Dative experiencers and obligors

Hindi often organizes experience and necessity around a को-marked participant rather than an agent.

मुझे रास्ते में अचानक उसका पूरा नाम याद आया।

mujhe rāste meṃ acānak uskā pūrā nām yād āyā.

I suddenly remembered his/her full name on the way.

सीमा को बीच में बैठक छोड़नी पड़ी।

sīmā ko bīc meṃ baiṭhak choṛnī paṛī.

Seema had to leave the meeting midway.

सीमा ने बीच में बैठक छोड़ दी।

sīmā ne bīc meṃ baiṭhak choṛ dī.

Seema left the meeting midway.

The remembering is construed as an experience that came to the speaker. In the first Seema sentence, obligation fell upon her, so सीमा को ... छोड़नी पड़ी means that she had to leave. The second is an ordinary active perfective: सीमा ने ... छोड़ दी says that she left, without expressing necessity. Changing को to ने therefore changes the event construal rather than merely repairing a case ending.

The tempting near-exception: present time can still take ने

Do not replace the false rule “past = ने” with “present = no ने.” A present perfect contains a perfective lexical event and therefore takes ने when it is active and transitive.

मैंने स्पेयर चाबी अलमारी में रखी है।

maĩne speyar cābī almārī meṃ rakhī hai.

I have put the spare key in the cupboard.

The final auxiliary is present है, but रखी is a transitive perfective. Aspect and argument structure still require मैंने.

Some lexical predicates show regional or constructional variation. That narrow zone must be learned from usage; it does not license ने with unambiguously intransitive सोना, आना, गिरना, or with progressives.

A short corrected dialogue turn

अ: अंजलि कब पहुँची? ब: वह सात बजे आई, फिर उसने सबके लिए चाय बनाई।

a: añjali kab pahũcī? ba: vah sāt baje āī, phir usne sabke lie cāy banāī.

A: When did Anjali arrive? B: She came at seven, then she made tea for everyone.

The dialogue contrasts intransitive वह ... आई with transitive उसने ... चाय बनाई inside the same past sequence. Time stays constant; predicate structure changes.

Common Mistakes

❌ दादी ने रात को जल्दी सोईं।

Incorrect—सोना is intransitive, so feminine respectful दादी controls सोईं without ने.

✅ दादी रात को दस बजे ही सो गईं।

dādī rāt ko das baje hī so gaīṃ.

Grandmother went to sleep at ten at night. (respectful)

❌ राज ने कल घर पर काम कर रहा था।

Incorrect—the past progressive is not perfective and keeps an unmarked subject.

✅ राज कल पूरी दोपहर घर पर काम कर रहा था।

rāj kal pūrī dopahar ghar par kām kar rahā thā.

Raj was working at home all afternoon yesterday.

❌ मीना ने अचानक गिर गई।

Incorrect—spontaneous गिरना is intransitive, and the unmarked subject controls feminine गई.

✅ गीली सीढ़ी पर मीना अचानक गिर गई।

gīlī sīṛhī par mīnā acānak gir gaī.

Meena suddenly fell on the wet stair.

❌ मैंने बैंक जाना पड़ा।

Incorrect—obligation with पड़ना marks the obligor with को, not ergative ने.

✅ मुझे दोपहर में बैंक जाना पड़ा।

mujhe dopahar meṃ baiṅk jānā paṛā.

I had to go to the bank in the afternoon.

Quick self-check

When you see past time, ignore it temporarily. Label the Hindi predicate as perfective or nonperfective, active or passive, transitive or intransitive. Use ने only when all three canonical conditions align. Then ask whether the participant is instead an experiencer or obligor marked by को. This blocks the reflex “past = ने.”

Key Takeaways

  • ने marks a perfective transitive agent, not past tense generally.
  • Past habituals and progressives, intransitive perfectives, passives, and dative frames do not take canonical ने.
  • Present perfect transitive clauses can take ने because aspect, not present versus past time, is decisive.
  • The wrong ने makes the listener expect a transitive patient and can block the agreement the clause actually needs.
