आप āp may refer to one person, but its agreement is plural-honorific. A learner who sees one addressee and says ❌ आप तैयार है is matching grammar to head count. Hindi instead matches the agreement package to the pronoun: आप तैयार हैं.
English you gives no help because it uses the same verb for one friend, one respected stranger, and a crowd. This page repairs singular agreement after आप; the full pronoun paradigm belongs on the आप reference page.
One referent, plural-honorific grammar
| Environment | Wrong singular | Respectful आप form |
|---|---|---|
| copula | आप तैयार है | आप तैयार हैं |
| habitual, man | आप आते है | आप आते हैं |
| future, man | आप आएगा | आप आएँगे |
| future, woman | आप आएगी | आप आएँगी |
| imperative | आप बैठ | आप बैठिए |
❌ सर, आप तैयार है?
Incorrect—one respected man still requires plural-honorific हैं.
✅ सर, आप तैयार हैं?
sar, āp taiyār haiṃ?
Sir, are you ready?
❌ मैडम, आप कल आएगी?
Incorrect—feminine gender is right, but singular आएगी does not match आप.
✅ मैडम, आप कल आएँगी?
maiḍam, āp kal āẽgī?
Ma'am, will you come tomorrow?
The respectful form preserves the addressee's gender where Hindi exposes it, but its grammatical number remains plural. To a man, say आएँगे; to a woman, आएँगी. Both contain the plural/honorific future pattern.
Agreement extends across the predicate
The repair is not limited to हैं. Habitual participles, progressive participles, futures, subjunctives, perfectives, auxiliaries, and imperatives can all display the honorific choice.
आप रोज़ यहाँ कितने बजे आते हैं?
āp roz yahā̃ kitne baje āte haiṃ?
What time do you come here every day? (respectful, to a man)
आप अभी किससे बात कर रही हैं?
āp abhī kisse bāt kar rahī haiṃ?
Who are you speaking with? (respectful, to a woman)
अगर आप सहमत हों, तो हम आज ही शुरू करें।
agar āp sahmat hoṃ, to ham āj hī śurū kareṃ.
If you agree, let us start today. (respectful)
कृपया इस कुर्सी पर बैठिए।
kripyā is kursī par baiṭhie.
Please sit in this chair. (respectful)
The feminine progressive रही looks singular because feminine singular and this honorific pattern do not always show plural morphology on every component. The auxiliary हैं still signals honorific number. Agreement is a package, but gender and number may be distributed across different words.
Past reference to one woman
Past forms are a frequent trap because semantic singularity feels especially salient. In careful neutral usage, a respected woman can be addressed with आप आई थीं or आप गई थीं: the lexical participle is feminine, and the auxiliary is honorific plural थीं, not singular थी.
मैडम, क्या आप कल भी यहाँ आई थीं?
maiḍam, kyā āp kal bhī yahā̃ āī thīṃ?
Ma'am, did you come here yesterday too?
डॉक्टर साहिबा, आप कब लौटी थीं?
ḍokṭar sāhibā, āp kab lauṭī thīṃ?
Doctor, when did you return? (respectful, addressing a woman)
Forms vary somewhat across speakers in how overtly plural a feminine honorific participle appears, but the auxiliary must not collapse to singular थी in the careful standard pattern taught here. With one respected man, plural morphology is overt on the participle as well: आप आए थे.
शर्मा जी, आप इतनी जल्दी कैसे आ गए थे?
śarmā jī, āp itnī jaldī kaise ā gae the?
Mr. Sharma, how had you arrived so early?
What the singular form communicates
The listener usually understands who is being addressed, but आप ... है/आएगा/था combines a respectful pronoun with the grammar of a different agreement level. It can sound as though the sentence begins with आप and then slips toward तू or third-person singular. Unlike a deliberate switch from आप to तुम, this mismatch does not create a coherent social nuance; it normally signals incomplete control of the paradigm.
Because honorificity is grammatical, adding polite vocabulary cannot compensate:
❌ कृपया आप यहाँ बैठ।
Incorrect—कृपया does not make the intimate singular imperative बैठ agree with आप.
✅ कृपया आप यहाँ बैठिए।
kripyā āp yahā̃ baiṭhie.
Please sit here. (respectful)
The corrected sentence aligns pronoun, imperative, and social stance.
Gender is not the same as singular agreement
Do not overcorrect by erasing the gender of one addressee. When an adjective or participle distinguishes gender, a woman normally has feminine forms even though आप is honorific plural.
सर, आप अकेले आए हैं?
sar, āp akele āe haiṃ?
Sir, did you come alone?
मैडम, आप अकेली आई हैं?
maiḍam, āp akelī āī haiṃ?
Ma'am, did you come alone?
The second does not become masculine plural merely because आप is grammatically plural. अकेली and आई identify one female referent; हैं carries the honorific agreement. For an actual mixed group, masculine plural supplies the normal default: आप सब तैयार हैं?
The near-exception: आपने cannot control agreement
Plural honorific agreement applies only when आप is eligible to control it. In a transitive perfective, आपने is a ने-marked agent and cannot control the verb. The unmarked object controls agreement, or the verb defaults if the object is marked.
आपने चिट्ठी लिखी।
āpne ciṭṭhī likhī.
You wrote the letter. (respectful; लिखी agrees with चिट्ठी)
आपने उन मेहमानों को बुलाया।
āpne un mehmānoṃ ko bulāyā.
You invited those guests. (respectful; default agreement)
❌ आपने चिट्ठी लिखे is not “more respectful.” It wrongly forces the agent's plurality through ने. This limit prevents a common overcorrection after learners memorize that आप takes plural forms.
Invariant predicates are another apparent nonissue: आप खुश हैं uses unchanged खुश, but plural हैं still matters. The absence of an ending on the adjective is not singular agreement.
A corrected dialogue turn
अ: डॉक्टर साहब, आप अभी खाली है? — ब: ‘खाली हैं।’ जी हाँ, बताइए क्या बात है।
a: ḍokṭar sāhab, āp abhī khālī hai? — ba: ‘khālī haiṃ.’ jī hā̃, batāie kyā bāt hai.
A: Doctor, are you free now? — B: ‘खाली हैं.’ Yes, tell me what the matter is. (The first speaker's singular copula is corrected.)
The lexical adjective खाली does not change. One small auxiliary contrast—है → हैं—carries the grammatical respect.
Common Mistakes
Using singular है with one respected person
❌ क्या आप व्यस्त है?
Incorrect—आप requires हैं even for one addressee.
✅ क्या आप व्यस्त हैं?
kyā āp vyast haiṃ?
Are you busy? (respectful)
Using a singular future
❌ सर, आप कब लौटेगा?
Incorrect—one respected man takes plural-honorific लौटेंगे.
✅ सर, आप कब लौटेंगे?
sar, āp kab lauṭeṅge?
Sir, when will you return?
Using a familiar imperative after आप
❌ आप दरवाज़ा खोलो।
Mismatched in neutral respectful speech—खोलो belongs with familiar तुम.
✅ आप दरवाज़ा खोलिए।
āp darvāzā kholie.
Please open the door. (respectful)
Erasing a woman's gender in the name of plurality
❌ मैडम, आप अकेले आए हैं?
Wrong for the intended single female addressee—honorific number does not erase feminine gender.
✅ मैडम, आप अकेली आई हैं?
maiḍam, āp akelī āī haiṃ?
Ma'am, did you come alone?
Forcing plural agreement after आपने
❌ आपने दोनों किताबें पढ़े।
Incorrect—आपने is blocked; unmarked feminine plural किताबें requires पढ़ीं.
✅ आपने दोनों किताबें पढ़ीं।
āpne donoṃ kitābeṃ paṛhīṃ.
You read both books. (respectful)
Quick self-check
Circle every आप. If it is an unmarked subject, scan the finite verb, auxiliary, future, and imperative for the honorific pattern: हैं, थे/थीं, -एँगे/-एँगी, -इए, as appropriate. Preserve the single person's gender where participles or adjectives show it. If the form is आपने, stop: use the separate perfective object/default agreement rule.
Key Takeaways
- One respected addressee still triggers plural-honorific agreement with आप.
- Gender remains visible: compare a man आएँगे with a woman आएँगी.
- Polite words such as कृपया cannot repair a singular verb or familiar imperative.
- आपने is the crucial limit: a ने-marked agent cannot control perfective agreement.
