Hindi तू tū is not the general singular equivalent of English you. It is an intimate singular pronoun whose warmth depends on an established relationship; without that license, it can sound patronizing, angry, or insulting. With an unfamiliar adult, neutral आप āp is the safe starting point.
This page corrects the social and grammatical mismatch. For the full three-way system, see choosing तू, तुम, or आप. Here the prevention rule is deliberately practical: do not initiate तू with an unfamiliar adult merely because only one person is present.
The error is a whole agreement package
Changing तू to आप requires more than replacing one word. Pronoun, auxiliary, possessive, object form, and imperative belong to the same address level.
| Function | Intimate तू | Familiar तुम | Respectful आप |
|---|---|---|---|
| direct + copula | तू है | तुम हो | आप हैं |
| object | तुझे | तुम्हें | आपको |
| possessive | तेरा/तेरी/तेरे | तुम्हारा/तुम्हारी/तुम्हारे | आपका/आपकी/आपके |
| ordinary imperative | कर | करो | कीजिए/करिए |
❌ भैया, तू बता, स्टेशन किधर है?
Socially inappropriate as a learner's default to an unfamiliar adult; भैया does not automatically license intimate तू.
✅ भैया, आप बताइए, स्टेशन किधर है?
bhaiyā, āp batāie, sṭeśan kidhar hai?
Brother, please tell me which way the station is. (respectful address to an unfamiliar man)
❌ मैडम, तुझे यह फ़ॉर्म भरना है।
Inappropriate mismatch—तुझे places an unfamiliar woman at the intimate तू level.
✅ मैडम, आपको यह फ़ॉर्म भरना है।
maiḍam, āpko yah form bharnā hai.
Ma'am, you need to fill out this form. (respectful)
The repaired sentences align every form with आप. Mixing आप with तेरा, तुझे, or a bare imperative still carries तू grammar even if the overt pronoun disappears.
Why English speakers underestimate तू
Modern English does not grammatically distinguish intimate, familiar, and respectful you. Number therefore feels like the obvious cue: one stranger equals singular. Hindi organizes the choice around relationship and stance instead. आप can address one respected person with plural-honorific agreement, while तू signals that the social distance is already extremely small—or that the speaker is intentionally denying deference.
माफ़ कीजिए, क्या आप बता सकते हैं कि यह बस एयरपोर्ट जाती है?
māf kījie, kyā āp batā sakte haiṃ ki yah bas eyarporṭ jātī hai?
Excuse me, can you tell me whether this bus goes to the airport? (respectful, to an unfamiliar man)
क्या आप इस सीट पर बैठेंगे? मैं अगली सीट पर बैठ जाता हूँ।
kyā āp is sīṭ par baiṭheṅge? maĩ aglī sīṭ par baiṭh jātā hū̃.
Would you like to sit in this seat? I'll sit in the next one. (respectful, male speaker)
These are ordinary public interactions, not ceremonially formal speech. आप is neutral-respectful with customers, drivers, officials, shopkeepers, older people, and unfamiliar adults generally. Its use need not suggest coldness.
What a listener may infer
An unfamiliar adult who hears तू may infer one of several stances: “I am treating you like a small child,” “I rank above you,” “I am angry,” or “I am claiming an intimacy we do not share.” The exact reaction depends on region, class, age, and situation, but the risk is real because तू is socially meaningful even when the speaker intended only singular you.
❌ तू लाइन में पीछे जा।
Incorrect for neutral address to an unfamiliar adult—it sounds like an order delivered downward.
✅ कृपया आप लाइन के आख़िर में जाइए।
kripyā āp lāin ke āxir meṃ jāie.
Please go to the back of the line. (respectful)
The first sentence is not structurally ill-formed. Its fault is pragmatic: it communicates a stance stronger than the learner intends. Grammar references must distinguish “ungrammatical” from “socially hazardous.”
When तुम is an appropriate middle choice
तुम is familiar, not maximally intimate. It is common among peers, classmates, coworkers with an established informal culture, siblings, and young people. Some communities move to तुम quickly; others retain आप for years. If an unfamiliar peer addresses you with तुम, reciprocal तुम may become natural, but mirroring is a contextual judgment, not a universal rule.
अगर तुम्हें ठीक लगे, तो हम एक-दूसरे को तुम कह सकते हैं।
agar tumheṃ ṭhīk lage, to ham ek-dūsre ko tum kah sakte haiṃ.
If you're comfortable with it, we can use तुम with each other. (familiar negotiation)
तुम पहली बार इस कक्षा में आए हो? मैं भी नया हूँ।
tum pahlī bār is kakṣā meṃ āe ho? maĩ bhī nayā hū̃.
Is this your first time in this class? I'm new too. (familiar, male speakers)
The first example makes the shift explicit. Asking or following an established reciprocal choice is safer than assuming intimacy.
Genuine uses of तू
Do not overcorrect by declaring तू inherently rude. It can express deep affection between close friends, partners, siblings, or family members whose relationship conventionally uses it.
तू चिंता मत कर, मैं हमेशा तेरे साथ हूँ।
tū cintā mat kar, maĩ hameśā tere sāth hū̃.
Don't worry; I'm always with you. (intimate and affectionate)
Adults may use तू or तुम to small children, depending on family and region. Devotional address to a deity can use तू (devotional/literary) because it constructs direct intimacy rather than disrespect.
तू ही मेरा सहारा है।
tū hī merā sahārā hai.
You alone are my support. (devotional/literary intimate address)
In arguments, films, or reported speech, तू can deliberately mark aggression (confrontational/informal). Learners need to recognize that meaning without adopting it as neutral public address. Some regional and rural speech communities also distribute तू and तुम differently (regional: varies); a local native norm may license a use that would sound marked elsewhere.
Do not copy unequal address blindly
A customer, employer, elder, police officer, or other higher-status speaker may use तुम or तू while receiving आप in return. That asymmetry reports a social relationship; it is not a vocabulary lesson proving that तू is safe with all strangers. Learners usually avoid accidental disrespect by beginning with आप and adjusting only after the local norm becomes clear.
Likewise, adding जी or सर does not cancel तू:
❌ सर जी, तू यहाँ बैठ।
Mismatched—respectful titles clash with unlicensed intimate pronoun and imperative.
✅ सर, आप यहाँ बैठिए।
sar, āp yahā̃ baiṭhie.
Sir, please sit here. (respectful)
A corrected dialogue turn
अ: माफ़ कीजिए, तू मुझे रास्ता बता सकता है? — ब: मुझे ‘आप’ कहिए। कहाँ जाना है? — अ: जी, क्या आप मुझे मेट्रो का रास्ता बता सकते हैं?
a: māf kījie, tū mujhe rāstā batā saktā hai? — ba: mujhe ‘āp’ kahie. kahā̃ jānā hai? — a: jī, kyā āp mujhe meṭro kā rāstā batā sakte haiṃ?
A: Excuse me, can you tell me the way? — B: Please address me as आप. Where do you need to go? — A: Yes, can you tell me the way to the metro? (The first turn is socially mismatched.)
The final turn changes तू → आप, masculine singular सकता है → सकते हैं, and keeps the request respectful. Repairing the package makes the shift audible even if the addressee is only one man.
Common Mistakes
Translating every singular “you” as तू
❌ अंकल, तू कहाँ रहता है?
Inappropriate to an unfamiliar older man—singular reference does not license तू.
✅ अंकल, आप कहाँ रहते हैं?
aṅkal, āp kahā̃ rahte haiṃ?
Uncle, where do you live? (respectful address)
Changing the pronoun but keeping तू agreement
❌ आप मेरी मदद कर।
Incorrectly mixed—bare कर is the intimate imperative.
✅ आप मेरी मदद कीजिए।
āp merī madad kījie.
Please help me. (respectful)
Assuming “please” neutralizes intimate grammar
❌ प्लीज़, तू थोड़ा इंतज़ार कर।
Still intimate; प्लीज़ softens the request but does not change the address level.
✅ कृपया आप थोड़ा इंतज़ार कीजिए।
kripyā āp thoṛā intazār kījie.
Please wait a little. (respectful)
Treating affection between friends as a rule for public speech
❌ दुकानदार से: तू मुझे एक किलो आम दे।
Inappropriate as a learner's neutral request to an unfamiliar shopkeeper.
✅ दुकानदार से: आप मुझे एक किलो आम दीजिए।
dukāndār se: āp mujhe ek kilo ām dījie.
To a shopkeeper: Please give me one kilo of mangoes. (respectful)
Quick self-check
Before speaking to someone new, inspect four places: pronoun, postpositional form, possessive, and verb. Start with आप / आपको / आपका / हैं / -इए. Use तुम when a familiar reciprocal norm is clear. Use तू / तुझे / तेरा / है / bare imperative only when real intimacy, devotional style, a documented regional norm, or an intentional confrontational stance makes that meaning appropriate.
Key Takeaways
- तू is intimate singular, not neutral singular “you.”
- With unfamiliar adults, आप is the safest neutral-respectful choice and requires plural-honorific grammar.
- तुम is a genuine middle level whose appropriateness depends on an established peer relationship.
- तू can be affectionate, devotional, regional, or confrontational; those licensed uses do not make it a default for strangers.
