Marking every direct object with को

Hindi does not put को after every direct object. It uses differential object marking: a personal pronoun or identifiable human normally takes को, an ordinary inanimate object normally remains unmarked, and animals or specially individuated things occupy a meaningful middle. In an out-of-the-blue neutral report, learner उसने खिड़की को खोला is pragmatically overmarked because it treats को as a universal accusative ending; neutral Hindi says उसने खिड़की खोली. The marked version is grammatical when a particular or contrasted window is intended.

This overgeneralization often comes from memorizing early human-object examples such as मुझे बुलाओ “call me” and then assuming that every English object needs the same marker. English word order identifies objects but does not reveal Hindi's animacy and specificity distinction. The full decision system appears under को or no को for direct objects; this page is a repair drill.

Error, intended meaning, and what a listener infers

अदिति ने नीली फ़ाइल मेज़ पर रखी।

aditi ne nīlī fāil mez par rakhī.

Aditi put the blue file on the table.

An ordinary known inanimate object can be definite and still remain unmarked. Adding को is not always ungrammatical, but it is not neutral: नीली फ़ाइल को encourages a listener to treat that file as a specially selected, contrasted, or bounded target—perhaps the blue file rather than the red one.

The marker also changes agreement. Unmarked feminine फ़ाइल controls रखी. With फ़ाइल को, the perfective normally defaults to masculine singular रखा. Automatic को therefore produces both an unintended discourse signal and a likely agreement error.

💡
Before adding को, ask what special individuation it contributes. If your only answer is “because this is the object,” leave an ordinary inanimate object unmarked.

The default correction by object type

Object typeUsual choiceExample
personal pronounmarked or fused formमुझे, उसे, उन्हें
named or identifiable humanको expectedसीमा को बुलाओ
particular pet or salient animateको strongly favoredअपने कुत्ते को ढूँढो
nonspecific animate kindoften unmarkedएक डॉक्टर बुलाओ
ordinary inanimate objectnormally unmarkedदरवाज़ा खोलो
contrasted/strongly individuated inanimateको possibleइस फ़ाइल को अलग रखो

मैंने आरव को स्टेशन पर देखा।

maĩne ārav ko sṭeśan par dekhā.

I saw Aarav at the station.

मैंने स्टेशन पर एक पुराना नक्शा देखा।

maĩne sṭeśan par ek purānā nakśā dekhā.

I saw an old map at the station.

The named human is highly animate and identifiable, so को is expected. The newly introduced map is unmarked. English places both after saw; Hindi does not treat them alike.

Definiteness is not enough

The English cue the often tempts learners to add को. Hindi demonstratives can identify an object without forcing object marking.

रीना ने वह किताब दो दिन में पढ़ी।

rīnā ne vah kitāb do din meṃ paṛhī.

Reena read that book in two days.

वह किताब is unquestionably specific, yet its ordinary inanimate patient role remains unmarked and controls feminine पढ़ी.

Now introduce genuine contrast:

इस किताब को तो मैंने पढ़ लिया, दूसरी अभी बाक़ी है।

is kitāb ko to maĩne paṛh liyā, dūsrī abhī bāqī hai.

This book I have finished; the other one is still left.

Fronted इस किताब को तो selects one book against another. Because को blocks object agreement, the predicate is default पढ़ लिया, not feminine पढ़ ली. This is the near-exception that prevents overcorrection: inanimate को is available when it contributes a discourse construal.

Animacy is a scale, not two boxes

Specific humans and pronouns occupy the strongest marked end. Animals vary with identifiability and the speaker's relationship.

हमने झील के पास एक हिरन देखा।

hamne jhīl ke pās ek hiran dekhā.

We saw a deer near the lake.

हमने घायल हिरन को वन अधिकारी के पास पहुँचाया।

hamne ghāyal hiran ko van adhikārī ke pās pahũcāyā.

We took the injured deer to the forest officer.

The first animal is introduced as an instance encountered. The second is a salient, strongly affected individual and naturally takes को. This is not a rigid rule that injury mechanically adds the marker; it illustrates how animacy, affectedness, and discourse identity converge.

Nonspecific human roles can also remain unmarked in existential or role-seeking contexts:

मरीज़ की तबीयत बिगड़ रही है; जल्दी एक डॉक्टर बुलाइए।

marīz kī tabīyat bigaṛ rahī hai; jaldī ek ḍokṭar bulāie.

The patient's condition is worsening; please call a doctor quickly.

If a particular doctor is already on duty, उस डॉक्टर को बुलाइए selects that known person.

Not every को phrase is a direct object

Universal-object marking also causes faulty agreement analysis because को has other functions: recipient, experiencer, goal, and scheduled time.

नीला ने रवि को नई चाबी दी।

nīlā ne ravi ko naī cābī dī.

Neela gave Ravi the new key.

Here रवि को is recipient, while unmarked feminine चाबी is the direct object and controls दी. Simply labeling every को phrase “object” misses the clause's participant structure.

A short corrected dialogue turn

अ: कौन-सी फ़ाइल भेजूँ? ब: नीली फ़ाइल भेज दो; लाल फ़ाइल को अभी मत छूना।

a: kaun-sī fāil bhejū̃? ba: nīlī fāil bhej do; lāl fāil ko abhī mat chūnā.

A: Which file should I send? B: Send the blue file; do not touch the red file yet. (familiar)

Unmarked नीली फ़ाइल is an ordinary patient. लाल फ़ाइल को is contrastively selected for special treatment. The different marking is informative, not random.

Common Mistakes

❌ अमन ने सुबह ख़बर को पढ़ा।

Overmarked in the neutral reading—an ordinary inanimate news item does not need को.

✅ अमन ने सुबह पूरी ख़बर पढ़ी।

aman ne subah pūrī xabar paṛhī.

Aman read the whole news story in the morning.

❌ रीता ने खाना को बनाया।

Overmarked—ordinary inanimate खाना remains unmarked and controls masculine agreement.

✅ रीता ने मेहमानों के लिए खाना बनाया।

rītā ne mehmānoṃ ke lie khānā banāyā.

Reeta cooked food for the guests.

❌ मैंने वह चिट्ठी को लिखी।

Incorrect—neutral inanimate marking needs no को; if को were contrastively intended, वह must become उस and agreement must default.

✅ मैंने वह लंबी चिट्ठी कल लिखी।

maĩne vah lambī ciṭṭhī kal likhī.

I wrote that long letter yesterday.

❌ सुमन ने गरम चाय को पी ली।

Overmarked in a neutral consumption event—the ordinary inanimate object should remain unmarked.

✅ सुमन ने सारी गरम चाय पी ली।

suman ne sārī garam cāy pī lī.

Suman drank all the hot tea.

Quick self-check

Classify the object before marking it. Pronoun or identifiable human: use the conventional को form. Particular animal: strongly consider को. Ordinary inanimate object: leave it unmarked unless a real contrast, topicalization, or bounded-target reading motivates marking. Then recheck the demonstrative's case and perfective agreement: को blocks the object from controlling the verb.

Key Takeaways

  • को is differential object marking, not a universal accusative suffix.
  • Definite inanimate objects normally remain unmarked; English the is not a trigger.
  • Marked inanimates imply individuation, contrast, or special affectedness. In canonical ने-marked perfectives, a को-marked object cannot control agreement, so the predicate normally defaults to masculine singular.
  • Specific humans and personal pronouns normally require marking, so removing every को is equally wrong.
  • A को phrase may instead be a recipient, experiencer, or goal; analyze the semantic role.
