Animacy specificity and object marking

Hindi object marking follows several overlapping scales. Objects high in humanness, animacy, specificity, definiteness, individuation, or affectedness are more likely to take को. Objects low on those scales—mass-like, generic, nonspecific, or incorporated into an activity—are more likely to remain unmarked. The general construction is mapped on the differential object-marking page; this page concentrates on the semantic forces behind the alternation.

These are tendencies, not six independent switches. A specific human object sits high on several scales and strongly requires को; an ordinary inanimate theme can remain unmarked even when definite. The interesting choices lie between those poles.

The animacy scale

A useful first approximation is:

Object typeTypical marking tendencyExample
personal pronoun / identified humanको strongly expectedउसे, रवि को
other humandepends strongly on specificityएक सहायक / उस सहायक को
identified animalको commonअपने कुत्ते को
indefinite animalmarked or unmarked by construalएक कुत्ता / एक कुत्ते को
inanimate themeusually unmarkedरिपोर्ट पढ़ी

The scale predicts a tendency because highly animate objects resemble likely agents and benefit from overt role marking. को helps identify them as the patient, target, or affected participant. That functional explanation is useful, but actual usage is grammaticalized: speakers do not consciously calculate ambiguity every time.

गाइड ने सभी पर्यटकों को वापस बुलाया।

gāiḍ ne sabhī paryaṭakoṃ ko vāpas bulāyā.

The guide called all the tourists back.

The definite human group requires को. Its plurality does not make it an agreement controller; बुलाया is default after गाइड ने.

Specificity separates “some kind” from “that one”

Specificity concerns whether the speaker has a particular referent in mind, not merely whether the noun is singular or introduced by एक.

हम अगले महीने के लिए अनुभवी चालक ढूँढ रहे हैं।

ham agle mahīne ke lie anubhavī cālak ḍhū̃ḍh rahe haiṃ.

We're looking for an experienced driver for next month. (no particular driver identified)

हम उस अनुभवी चालक को ढूँढ रहे हैं जो कल यहाँ आया था।

ham us anubhavī cālak ko ḍhū̃ḍh rahe haiṃ jo kal yahā̃ āyā thā.

We're looking for the experienced driver who came here yesterday.

The first describes a role to be filled; the driver need not yet exist as an identified discourse referent. The relative clause in the second uniquely identifies a known person, and को marks that specific object.

English articles only partly overlap with this distinction. English “an experienced driver” can be specific or nonspecific; Hindi case and context help disambiguate it. Conversely, an English definite inanimate object need not take को.

💡
Ask “Does the speaker intend a particular individual?” rather than “Does English use a or the?” Specificity is a meaning distinction; articles are only one language's way of signaling it.

Animals occupy the middle

Animals are animate but vary widely in individuation. A newly noticed, indefinite animal can remain unmarked:

मैंने स्टेशन के बाहर एक कुत्ता देखा।

maĩne sṭeśan ke bāhar ek kuttā dekhā.

I saw a dog outside the station.

An owned, named, tracked, or otherwise identified animal commonly takes को:

मैंने अपने कुत्ते को पड़ोसी के बगीचे में देखा।

maĩne apne kutte ko paṛosī ke bagīce meṃ dekhā.

I saw my dog in the neighbor's garden.

Masculine कुत्ता makes both surface predicates देखा, so agreement alone hides the distinction. Replace it with feminine बिल्ली and the structural contrast becomes visible: unmarked एक बिल्ली देखी, but marked अपनी बिल्ली को देखा. This controlled substitution is more reliable than guessing from the identical masculine form.

With rescue, feeding, treating, or harming predicates, affectedness can encourage को even for an indefinite animal:

स्वयंसेवकों ने एक घायल घोड़े को बचाया।

svayaṃsevakoṃ ne ek ghāyal ghoṛe ko bacāyā.

The volunteers rescued an injured horse.

The horse is highly affected and treated as an individual patient. The indefinite एक does not cancel those properties.

Inanimate definites usually remain unmarked

Hindi does not routinely mark every definite object. An inanimate theme of reading, buying, opening, or making generally remains unmarked:

नाज़िया ने नई रिपोर्ट पढ़ी और खिड़की खोली।

nāziyā ne naī riporṭ paṛhī aur khiṛkī kholī.

Nazia read the new report and opened the window.

Both objects are readily understood as definite in context, yet they remain unmarked and independently control feminine पढ़ी and खोली.

Marking becomes more natural when the object is singled out from alternatives, resumed as a contrastive topic, or construed as a particular target:

इसी रिपोर्ट को ध्यान से पढ़िए; बाकी फ़ाइलें बाद में देखिए।

isī riporṭ ko dhyān se paṛhie; bākī fāileṃ bād meṃ dekhie.

Read this very report carefully; look at the other files later.

The combination इसी ... को strongly individuates the report. ही is inside demonstrative इसी, while को closes the entire object constituent.

Affected manipulation can similarly favor marked inanimates:

इस रस्सी को बीच से काट दीजिए।

is rassī ko bīc se kāṭ dījie.

Please cut this rope through the middle.

Unmarked यह रस्सी बीच से काट दीजिए is also possible in a direct instruction. The marked version presents the rope as the selected, fully affected target; it is not automatically more “correct.”

Generic and incorporated objects stay low in individuation

Bare nouns can describe an activity or a kind rather than one bounded object. Such objects are normally unmarked:

आरती शाम को संगीत सुनती है और कविता पढ़ती है।

ārtī śām ko saṅgīt suntī hai aur kavitā paṛhtī hai.

Aarti listens to music and reads poetry in the evening.

संगीत and कविता characterize habitual activities. They are not particular tokens selected for affectedness. The unmarked feminine subject आरती controls both nonperfective predicates.

Plural human nouns can also have a generic or nonspecific reading, though humanness still raises the pressure for को. Compare recruitment language such as कंपनी इंजीनियर ढूँढ रही है “the company is looking for engineers” with कंपनी उन इंजीनियरों को ढूँढ रही है “the company is looking for those engineers.” Number alone does not settle the case choice.

Negation changes scope, not the hierarchy

Under negation, an unmarked indefinite can fall within the scope of नहीं, yielding a nonspecific “any” reading:

हमें रास्ते में कोई टैक्सी नहीं मिली।

hameṃ rāste meṃ koī ṭaiksī nahīṃ milī.

We couldn't find any taxi on the way.

This is an intransitive मिलना construction with dative experiencer हमें; unmarked feminine टैक्सी controls मिली. It illustrates nonspecificity without turning कोई into object को.

A specific marked object remains outside that nonspecific interpretation:

मैं उस उम्मीदवार को नहीं चुन रहा हूँ, क्योंकि अनुभव कम है।

maĩ us ummīdvār ko nahīṃ cun rahā hū̃, kyoṅki anubhav kam hai.

I'm not choosing that candidate because the experience is insufficient. (male speaker)

The candidate is identifiable despite the negative decision. Negation does not remove को, and masculine रहा agrees with unmarked subject मैं, not with the object.

Focus can heighten individuation

Focus often makes a referent contrastive, which can favor को, but the particles and case marker do different jobs:

समिति ने इसी प्रस्ताव को स्वीकार किया, दूसरे प्रस्ताव को नहीं।

samiti ne isī prastāv ko svīkār kiyā, dūsre prastāv ko nahīṃ.

The committee accepted this proposal in particular, not the other proposal.

ही selects the focused alternative; को marks each singled-out object. Because both subject and object are marked, किया is masculine singular default. Focus does not directly trigger agreement.

Clause boundaries reset the calculation

Object properties in one clause do not control another clause's agreement:

संपादक ने उस लेखक को बताया कि उसकी कहानी चुनी गई है।

sampādak ne us lekhak ko batāyā ki uskī kahānī cunī gaī hai.

The editor told that writer that his story had been selected.

Specific human recipient उस लेखक को helps produce matrix default बताया after संपादक ने. Inside the कि-clause, unmarked feminine कहानी controls passive चुनी गई है. Semantic possession by the writer cannot make the matrix object control the embedded predicate.

💡
For complex sentences, label animacy and specificity only after separating the clauses. The same person can be a marked recipient in one clause while a different unmarked noun controls agreement in the next.

Common Mistakes

1. Assuming every animate indefinite requires को

❌ हमें इस भूमिका के लिए एक अभिनेता को चाहिए।

Incorrect in the intended nonspecific requirement — चाहिए takes an unmarked desired item here.

✅ हमें इस भूमिका के लिए एक अनुभवी अभिनेता चाहिए।

hameṃ is bhūmikā ke lie ek anubhavī abhinetā cāhie.

We need an experienced actor for this role. (not yet a particular person)

2. Assuming every inanimate definite requires को

❌ नाज़िया ने नई रिपोर्ट को पढ़ा।

Marked and unnatural for the intended neutral statement — ordinary inanimate theme रिपोर्ट remains unmarked and controls पढ़ी.

✅ नाज़िया ने आज नई रिपोर्ट पढ़ी।

nāziyā ne āj naī riporṭ paṛhī.

Nazia read the new report today.

3. Omitting को from a highly affected animal patient

❌ डॉक्टर ने घायल घोड़ा बचाया।

Incorrect for the intended individuated patient — the injured horse takes को.

✅ डॉक्टर ने घायल घोड़े को समय पर बचाया।

ḍokṭar ne ghāyal ghoṛe ko samay par bacāyā.

The doctor saved the injured horse in time.

4. Making agreement follow a marked specific object

❌ समिति ने इसी योजना को स्वीकार की।

Incorrect — योजना को cannot control; with समिति ने, the predicate is default किया.

✅ समिति ने इसी योजना को स्वीकार किया।

samiti ne isī yojnā ko svīkār kiyā.

The committee accepted this particular plan.

Key Takeaways

  • Humanness and animacy raise the likelihood of को, but specificity and affectedness refine the choice.
  • A nonspecific human role can remain unmarked; a strongly affected indefinite animal can take को.
  • Inanimate definites usually remain unmarked unless contrast, selection, or target-like affectedness favors individuation.
  • Generic and activity-like objects sit low on the individuation scale.
  • These meanings select object case; agreement then follows the resulting syntactic structure.
