Using direct nouns before postpositions

English adds a preposition before an unchanged noun: the room → in the room. Hindi places a postposition after the phrase and puts that phrase in the oblique case: कमरा → कमरे में. The common learner error कमरा में preserves the direct citation form even though में has already triggered a different case.

This page is a correction routine, not a full declension lesson. Forms are developed under the oblique before simple postpositions. The prevention rule is: once you choose a postposition, convert its entire complement before you say the postposition.

Error, intended meaning, and the listener's repair

आज बैठक बड़े कमरे में होगी।

āj baiṭhak baṛe kamre meṃ hogī.

Today's meeting will be in the large room.

Direct बड़ा कमरा becomes oblique बड़े कमरे before में. If a learner says बड़ा कमरा में, a listener usually infers the intended location, but hears the noun phrase and postposition fail to connect morphologically. It sounds as though a dictionary-form phrase was inserted before में.

The error can also delay parsing. लड़के by itself could be direct plural “boys” or oblique singular “boy.” The postposition resolves it:

लड़के बाहर खड़े हैं, लेकिन उस लड़के को अंदर बुलाइए।

laṛke bāhar khaṛe haiṃ, lekin us laṛke ko andar bulāie.

The boys are standing outside, but please call that boy inside.

The same surface लड़के has two analyses. Do not “correct” the direct plural in the first clause; correct case only where syntax requires it.

The repair table

Direct formBefore a postpositionTypical change
कमराकमरे मेंmasculine -ā singular: -ā → -e
लड़केलड़कों कोmasculine plural: -e → -oṃ
लड़कियाँलड़कियों सेfeminine plural: -iyā̃ → -iyoṃ
किताबेंकिताबों परfeminine plural: -eṃ → -oṃ
दोस्तदोस्त के लिएmany singulars: no visible noun change

रास्ते पर पानी भरा है, इसलिए पुराने पुल तक पैदल मत जाइए।

rāste par pānī bharā hai, islie purāne pul tak paidal mat jāie.

There is standing water on the road, so please do not walk as far as the old bridge.

रास्ता → रास्ते visibly changes. पुल does not, but adjective पुराना → पुराने reveals the oblique phrase before तक.

Case belongs to the whole noun phrase

Correcting only the noun leaves mismatched dependents. Direct यह नया लड़का becomes इस नए लड़के से; direct मेरा छोटा बेटा becomes मेरे छोटे बेटे को.

मैंने इस नए लड़के से अभी तक बात नहीं की।

maĩne is nae laṛke se abhī tak bāt nahīṃ kī.

I have not spoken to this new boy yet.

मेरे छोटे बेटे को आज बुख़ार है।

mere choṭe beṭe ko āj buxār hai.

My younger son has a fever today.

English from this new boy and to my younger son change neither determiner nor adjective. That transfer produces several Hindi errors at once. Chunk the whole phrase, not only the final noun.

💡
Scan leftward from the postposition: noun, declinable adjective, possessive, numeral-like modifier, and demonstrative must form one case-compatible phrase.

Unchanged nouns are a tempting near-exception

Feminine singular किताब and consonant-final masculine singular दोस्त usually show no special oblique ending. That is not permission to use direct forms generally. Demonstratives and possessives can expose the case distinction.

यह किताब मेरी है, पर इस किताब पर नाम किसी और का है।

yah kitāb merī hai, par is kitāb par nām kisī aur kā hai.

This book is mine, but the name on this book is someone else's.

मेरा दोस्त दिल्ली में रहता है; मैं अगले हफ़्ते अपने दोस्त के पास जाऊँगा।

merā dost dillī meṃ rahtā hai; maĩ agle hafte apne dost ke pās jāū̃gā.

My friend lives in Delhi; I will visit my friend next week. (male speaker)

The nouns stay किताब and दोस्त, while यह → इस and अपना → अपने reveal oblique case.

Simple and compound postpositions

Short को, ने, से, में, पर, तक all select oblique complements. Compound postpositions such as के पास, के सामने, के बारे में do too, often with genitive linker के.

नए दफ़्तर के सामने एक छोटा कैफ़े खुला है।

nae daftar ke sāmne ek choṭā kaife khulā hai.

A small café has opened opposite the new office.

By contrast, a bare destination with a motion verb can lack a postposition: रवि घर गया “Ravi went home.” Do not overcorrect घर merely because English uses to. Hindi case responds to Hindi structure, not an English preposition hidden in the translation.

A short corrected dialogue turn

अ: मीटिंग कहाँ है? ब: पहली मंज़िल पर, उस बड़े कमरे में। अ: ठीक है, मैं लिफ़्ट से आता हूँ।

a: mīṭiṅg kahā̃ hai? ba: pahlī maṃzil par, us baṛe kamre meṃ. a: ṭhīk hai, maĩ lifṭ se ātā hū̃.

A: Where is the meeting? B: On the first floor, in that large room. A: All right, I'll come by elevator.

The corrected reply uses मंज़िल पर, oblique उस बड़े कमरे में, and लिफ़्ट से. Only the forms capable of displaying oblique case visibly change.

Common Mistakes

❌ राहुल अभी कमरा में है।

Incorrect—masculine -आ noun कमरा must become oblique कमरे before में.

✅ राहुल अभी पिछले कमरे में है।

rāhul abhī pichle kamre meṃ hai.

Rahul is in the back room right now.

❌ मैंने वे लड़के से बात की।

Incorrect for ‘those boys’—the demonstrative and plural noun must both be oblique before से.

✅ मैंने उन नए लड़कों से बात की।

maĩne un nae laṛkoṃ se bāt kī.

I spoke with those new boys.

❌ हम मेरा छोटा भाई के लिए तोहफ़ा लाए।

Incorrect—the whole phrase मेरा छोटा भाई must be oblique before के लिए.

✅ हम मेरे छोटे भाई के लिए एक खेल लाए।

ham mere choṭe bhāī ke lie ek khel lāe.

We brought a game for my younger brother.

❌ इन सारी किताबें पर धूल जमी है।

Incorrect—plural किताबें must become oblique किताबों before पर.

✅ इन पुरानी किताबों पर बहुत धूल जमी है।

in purānī kitāboṃ par bahut dhūl jamī hai.

A lot of dust has settled on these old books.

Quick self-check

Circle every postposition. For each one, bracket the full phrase immediately before it. Convert masculine -आ singular to -ए, every plural noun to its oblique plural, and demonstratives or declinable modifiers to compatible oblique forms. If nothing changes visibly, confirm that the noun belongs to an invariant singular class; do not assume the oblique rule disappeared.

Key Takeaways

  • Hindi postpositions select oblique complements; English prepositions do not model this case change.
  • Case spreads across the phrase: इस नए लड़के से, not a mixture of direct and oblique forms.
  • Feminine and consonant-final singular nouns may hide the contrast, while modifiers reveal it.
  • A bare destination such as घर गया contains no postposition and should not be overcorrected.
