B2 Learner Path

At B2, correct clauses are only the starting point. You must organize prominence across a paragraph, grade certainty and obligation, embed information, control register, and interpret forms whose meaning depends on discourse. This path sequences existing pages and converts them into cumulative performance; it does not restate their grammar lessons.

Prerequisite review: stress-test the B1 system

Repeat the B1 Learner Path project with a public issue rather than a personal anecdote. Give a two-minute explanation, then write a fifteen-sentence version. Your marker, aspect, voice, linker, and particle choices must remain stable even when you add reasons, qualifications, and reported information.

Naglabas ng paunang abiso ang munisipyo, ngunit babaguhin pa raw ang iskedyul kapag natapos ang pagsusuri.

The municipality issued a preliminary notice, but the schedule will reportedly still be changed once the review is complete.

Ang pansamantalang iskedyul ang ipinaliwanag ng opisyal sa mga residenteng dumalo.

The temporary schedule was what the official explained to the residents who attended.

If you cannot explain the scope of pa raw, revisit B1 clitic ordering. If ang pansamantalang iskedyul is treated as an English direct object with an article, revisit voice and marker choice. Begin B2 only when the problem is interpretation or discourse effect rather than basic form recognition.

💡
B2 study is contrastive. For each production, create a second defensible version with a different voice, modal, connector, or register, then explain what changes in prominence or stance.

Core Block 1: voice across connected discourse

Begin with Voice Choice and Discourse Prominence. Then study the participant-marking, definiteness, question, relative-clause, and command pages for both actor voice and patient voice. Add the corresponding page sets for locative voice, benefactive voice, and instrumental and conveyance voice.

Track one referent through five sentences. Use full noun phrases, pronouns, and omission only when each remains recoverable. Then rewrite the paragraph around a different prominent participant.

Ipinamahagi ng mga boluntaryo ang tubig sa mga pamilyang lumikas. Inihatid nila ang natitirang galon sa pansamantalang klinika.

The volunteers distributed the water to the families who evacuated. They delivered the remaining containers to the temporary clinic.

Ang pansamantalang klinika ang pinagdalhan nila ng natitirang tubig dahil doon pinakamarami ang pasyente.

The temporary clinic was where they brought the remaining water because that was where the patients were most numerous.

The checkpoint is not choosing one eternally “best” voice. It is defending how each choice supports the surrounding discourse. If your defense says only “active” or “passive,” reopen the big-picture and prominence pages.

Core Block 2: modality, evidence, and stance

Study Modal Predicates and Their Complements, then contrast ability with maka- and ma-, permission with puwede and maaari, obligation with kailangan, and necessity with dapat. Add possibility with baka, probability with malamang, epistemic yata, and evidential meanings of daw and raw.

Baka hindi pa maaprubahan ang panukala, ngunit malamang na ilalabas bukas ang pasya ng lupon.

The proposal may not yet be approved, but the board's decision will probably be released tomorrow.

Maaari raw gamitin ang bulwagan, pero kailangan munang magsumite ng nakasulat na kahilingan.

The hall may reportedly be used, but a written request must be submitted first. (formal)

Create a five-step certainty scale about one uncertain event. Then create a separate permission-obligation exchange. If maaari, malamang, dapat, and kailangan become synonyms because English uses modal auxiliaries, revisit their individual pages and complements.

Core Block 3: complex noun phrases, questions, and relatives

Study Relative Clauses: Overview, the voice-specific relative-clause pages, Cleft-Like ang-Constructions, and Information Questions and Syntax. Combine them with Heavy Phrase Placement, Left Dislocation and Hanging Topics, and Word Order in Formal Prose.

Aling ulat ang ipinabasa ng direktor sa mga kasaping bagong halal?

Which report did the director have the newly elected members read?

Tungkol sa reklamong ipinadala noong nakaraang buwan, wala pang pinal na tugon ang tanggapan.

As for the complaint sent last month, the office still has no final response.

Checkpoint: turn a dense sentence into two clear sentences, then recombine it without losing the relative-clause head or creating ambiguous attachment. If English relative pronouns are inserted word for word, return to the relative overview. If every heavy phrase is fronted with ay, return to formal word order and topic structure.

Core Block 4: derivation without mechanical invention

Work through Root-Based Word Families, Affix Productivity and Lexicalization, Noun Formation with pag- and -an, Abstract Formation with ka-...-an, and Compounding and Linkers. Add Loanword Adaptation only after the native patterns are secure.

Build a small corpus notebook: record an attested derived word in context, identify its root and surface alternations, and note whether the formation is productive, restricted, or lexicalized. Reject a coined form when you cannot verify natural use.

Mahalaga ang pakikipag-ugnayan ng paaralan sa mga magulang bago ipatupad ang pagbabago.

Coordination between the school and parents is important before the change is implemented. (formal)

Hindi awtomatikong mahuhulaan ang kahulugan ng bawat salitang may magkakaparehong panlapi.

The meaning of every word with similar affixes cannot be predicted automatically.

Core Block 5: discourse connectors and pragmatic control

Compare kaya and tuloy, kasi and sapagkat, pero, ngunit, and subalit, and samantala. Add the pragmatic pages on softening requests, indirect refusals, turn-taking particles, and pragmatic effects of code-switching.

Produce the same disagreement as an informal family exchange, a neutral workplace exchange, and a formal written response. Label code-switching explicitly if you analyze it; do not use Taglish as a substitute for a readily available neutral Filipino construction.

Use Annotated Public-Domain Revolutionary Prose for compact formal syntax and Annotated Dialogue: Polite Disagreement for interaction. Annotate cohesion, voice continuity, modal stance, particles, and register before imitating either text.

💡
At B2, retrieval should alternate genres. A construction controlled only in exercises may disappear when the same meaning must be expressed in conversation, narrative, or formal prose.

Common Mistakes

Reversing participant roles in patient voice

❌ Ginagamit ng silid ang mga residente para sa libreng konsultasyon.

Incorrect for the intended roles—the markers make the room the user and the residents the entity used.

✅ Naglaan ng silid ang paaralan. Ginagamit na ngayon ang silid para sa libreng konsultasyon.

The school allocated a room. The room is now being used for free consultations.

Starting a clause with an evidential enclitic

❌ Daw malamang na ipagpapaliban ang pagdinig, pero wala pang opisyal na abiso.

Incorrect—daw is an enclitic and cannot stand unsupported at the beginning of this clause.

✅ Malamang daw na ipagpapaliban ang pagdinig, pero wala pang opisyal na abiso.

The hearing will reportedly probably be postponed, but there is no official notice yet.

Placing ay after an initial predicate

❌ Ipinasa ay ng inhinyero kahapon ang mahabang ulat tungkol sa pinsala sa tulay.

Incorrect—ay cannot be inserted after the initial predicate in this neutral clause.

✅ Ipinasa kahapon ng inhinyero ang mahabang ulat tungkol sa pinsala sa tulay.

The engineer submitted the long report about the bridge damage yesterday.

Attaching mang- without the required surface change

❌ Nangpili ang pangkat ng limang mungkahi mula sa mahabang talaan.

Incorrect surface formation—this established family does not preserve mang- unchanged before the root.

✅ Namili ang pangkat ng limang mungkahi mula sa mahabang talaan.

The group selected five proposals from the long list.

Using ng where a sa phrase is required

❌ Sapagkat kulang ng datos ang pagsusuri, iminumungkahi naming ipagpaliban muna ang pasya.

Incorrect—the adjective kulang takes a sa phrase for what the review lacks.

✅ Sapagkat kulang sa datos ang pagsusuri, iminumungkahi naming ipagpaliban muna ang pasya.

Because the review lacks data, we propose postponing the decision for now. (formal)

End-of-level integration project

Create a three-genre dossier about one community issue. Write a 180-word formal notice, record a two-minute conversational explanation, and produce a twelve-turn problem-solving dialogue. Across the dossier, use at least three voice types, a relative clause, two modal distinctions, a carefully verified derived word, and register-appropriate connectors and particles.

Then exchange the prominent participant in one paragraph, lower or raise the certainty of two claims, and edit one passage into another register. Annotate every change. Completion is coverage; B2 control is the ability to preserve facts while deliberately changing discourse organization, stance, and register.

B2 exit outcomes

By the end of this path, you should handle complex embedding, nuanced modality, discourse-driven voice choice, derivational families, and extended formal or conversational texts. You should be able to diagnose whether an English-shaped answer fails because of markers, aspect, voice, word order, clitic placement, lexical productivity, or register—and repair it with evidence from the linked pages.
