Many Filipino abstract nouns frame a base with ka-...-an/-han: ganda → kagandahan “beauty,” buti → kabutihan “goodness/benefit,” and ligtas → kaligtasan “safety.” The formation often turns a property or state into a noun, but the family also contains collectives, places, domains, and strongly lexicalized meanings.
For that reason, ka-...-an is not simply the Filipino equivalent of English -ness. It is a productive derivational pattern constrained by established vocabulary, stem alternations, and semantic convention. Learn what the pattern contributes, then learn each common noun as a whole.
Unless explicitly labeled otherwise, the forms and examples below are neutral contemporary Filipino.
Form and semantic range
| Base or related form | ka-...-an noun | Established meaning | Semantic type |
|---|---|---|---|
| maganda “beautiful” | kagandahan | beauty | property |
| mabuti “good” | kabutihan | goodness, welfare, benefit | property with lexical extensions |
| mahirap “difficult; poor” | kahirapan | difficulty, hardship, poverty | condition |
| malaya “free” | kalayaan | freedom | state |
| payapa “peaceful” | kapayapaan | peace | state with irregular surface form |
| bata “child; young” | kabataan | youth; young people | life stage or animate collective |
| gubat “forest/woods” | kagubatan | forest, forested domain | place/domain |
The table shows a family resemblance, not a single compositional formula. Kagandahan is close to “the quality of being beautiful”; kabataan can refer to young people as a social group; kagubatan names a physical domain.
Property words and abstract nouns
Property predicates describe an entity. The derived noun lets the property itself occupy a noun-phrase role.
Maganda ang lumang tulay kapag nasisinagan ng araw sa umaga.
The old bridge is beautiful when lit by the morning sun.
Ang kagandahan ng lumang tulay ang unang napansin ng mga bisita.
The beauty of the old bridge was the first thing the visitors noticed.
Maganda is the predicate in the first clause. In the second, ang kagandahan ng lumang tulay is a noun phrase; ng lumang tulay specifies the bearer of the beauty. English changes beautiful to beauty, but Filipino also changes the syntax and phrase marking.
Inuna ng lupon ang kabutihan ng buong pamayanan sa pagpili ng panukala.
The committee prioritized the welfare of the whole community when choosing a proposal.
Here kabutihan has the lexical extension “welfare/common good,” not merely an abstract measurement of goodness.
Surface forms are not fully predictable
The ending appears as -an or -han, and the base can change. Several high-frequency forms must simply be memorized:
- payapa → kapayapaan, not kapayapahan
- malaya → kalayaan, with the established reduced shape
- marunong → karunungan, with a stem alternation
- totoo → katotohanan, with an expanded conventional stem
- ligtas → kaligtasan, without an extra vowel or h
Umaasa ang mga pamilya sa pangmatagalang kapayapaan sa kanilang lalawigan.
The families hope for lasting peace in their province.
Hindi nasusukat sa dami ng sertipiko ang karunungan ng isang tao.
A person's wisdom is not measured by the number of certificates they have.
There is no honest automatic rule that derives every surface form. Some alternations reflect older morphological and sound patterns; others survive because the whole word is conventional. Standard spelling records the established result.
Transparent formation versus lexicalized member
Compare a property noun with a related-looking collective:
Kapansin-pansin ang kagandahan ng mga hinabing banig mula sa Basey.
The beauty of the woven mats from Basey is striking.
Aktibong nakilahok ang kabataan ng barangay sa paglilinis ng ilog.
The young people of the barangay actively participated in cleaning the river.
Kagandahan is relatively transparent as a property noun. Kabataan may name youth as a stage, but in the second sentence it is an animate collective referring to young people. Its singular morphology does not mean one person, and adding mga is unnecessary for this collective reading.
Kahirapan likewise has conventional extensions:
Lumala ang kahirapan sa ilang pamayanan matapos magsara ang minahan.
Poverty worsened in several communities after the mine closed.
Sa kabila ng mga kahirapan sa biyahe, nakarating sila bago magdilim.
Despite the difficulties during the trip, they arrived before dark.
Bare kahirapan names poverty as a broad condition. Mga kahirapan counts distinct difficulties. Abstract nouns are therefore often mass-like but not grammatically forbidden from plural readings.
The same frame can name places and domains
Some members are spatial rather than purely abstract.
Mahigpit na binabantayan ang kagubatan dahil nagsisimula na ang panahon ng sunog.
The forest is being closely monitored because fire season is beginning.
Maraming uri ng isda ang namumuhay sa karagatan sa paligid ng kapuluan.
Many species of fish live in the ocean around the archipelago.
Kagubatan and karagatan refer to environments or domains. Their existence blocks a simple rule equating the circumfix with English abstract suffixes. The semantic relation to gubat and dagat remains visible, but the whole nouns must be stored.
ka-...-an compared with pagka-
Both families can yield English abstract-noun translations, but they are not freely interchangeable. Kagandahan is the established noun “beauty.” Pagkamalikhain names creativity as the state or disposition of being creative. Pagkabata often concerns childhood or being young, whereas kabataan can name youth or the young collective.
Pinuri ng hurado ang kagandahan ng disenyo at ang pagkamalikhain ng pangkat.
The judges praised the beauty of the design and the team's creativity.
The two formations coexist because Filipino convention assigns them distinct lexical jobs. See nominalization with pagka- for that state-and-disposition pattern.
Phrase marking, participants, and reference
These formations are nouns, so they do not carry verbal voice or aspect. They can be pivots with ang, non-pivots with ng, or complements of sa. A following ng phrase can identify the bearer, possessor, or domain of the abstract property.
Nagtanong ang mga magulang tungkol sa kaligtasan ng gusali kapag may lindol.
The parents asked about the building's safety during an earthquake.
Ano ang kahalagahan ng maliit na liwasan sa pang-araw-araw na buhay ng komunidad?
What is the importance of the small plaza in the community's daily life?
English article choice does not determine the Filipino marker. Sa kaligtasan is selected by tungkol, while ano is the interrogative predicate and ang kahalagahan ng maliit na liwasan is its pivot.
A short exchange
—Ano ang ipinagmamalaki mo sa inyong bayan? —Ang katahimikan nito sa gabi at ang kabaitan ng mga kapitbahay.
—What are you proud of in your town? —Its quietness at night and the kindness of the neighbors.
Katahimikan and kabaitan are established abstract nouns. The reply coordinates two noun phrases; neither is manufactured during the conversation by applying an English -ness rule.
Common Mistakes
Keeping adjectival ma- inside the abstract noun
❌ Tinalakay sa pulong ang kamahirapan ng mga pamilyang nawalan ng trabaho.
Incorrect — the established noun is kahirapan, not kamahirapan.
✅ Tinalakay sa pulong ang kahirapan ng mga pamilyang nawalan ng trabaho.
The meeting discussed the hardship of families who lost their jobs.
Applying -han mechanically
❌ Hangad ng mga residente ang kapayapahan matapos ang mahabang alitan.
Incorrect standard form — the established noun is kapayapaan.
✅ Hangad ng mga residente ang kapayapaan matapos ang mahabang alitan.
The residents desire peace after the long conflict.
Inserting an extra syllable in kaligtasan
❌ Sinuri ng inhinyero ang kaligtasahan ng lumang gusali.
Incorrect — the conventional form from ligtas is kaligtasan.
✅ Sinuri ng inhinyero ang kaligtasan ng lumang gusali.
The engineer inspected the safety of the old building.
Treating ang as the English article “the”
❌ Lubos kaming humanga ang kagandahan ng mga ukit sa pintuan.
Incorrect — humanga selects a sa-phrase for what evokes admiration.
✅ Lubos kaming humanga sa kagandahan ng mga ukit sa pintuan.
We greatly admired the beauty of the carvings on the door.
Key Takeaways
Ka-...-an/-han often derives nouns for properties and conditions, but established members also name collectives, life stages, places, and domains. Related ma- property words commonly lose ma-, while suffix choice and stem shape contain lexical irregularities. These nouns take ordinary phrase markers and can develop mass or count readings. Use the pattern to recognize families, but learn kagandahan, kalayaan, kapayapaan, karunungan, kabataan, and other frequent forms as complete lexical items.
