Actor Voice

Actor voice selects the actor-like participant as the clause's pivot. That participant takes the ang series—ang/si/sina or an ang-form pronoun—while a core patient commonly takes ng and locations, goals, or recipients commonly take sa/kay/kina. The label “actor” includes more than a deliberate doer: an experiencer, mover, or entity undergoing an internally driven change can also be the actor-voice pivot.

Actor voice is called pokus sa tagaganap or actor focus in traditional teaching. “Voice” is useful because the verb's morphology and the participant markers form one alignment pattern.

The Basic Alignment

ParticipantCommon phrasePersonal namePronoun
actor pivotangsi/sinaang-form: ako, ka, siya, tayo...
core patient non-pivotng phrase or ng-form demonstrativenot normally a basic object complementpersonal pronouns are not normally basic object complements
location, goal, recipientsakay/kinasa-form

Basic actor-voice object complements do not mechanically replace ng with ni/nina before a personal name or use an ng-form personal pronoun as the patient. A named or pronominal person is commonly expressed through patient voice, or through a verb-specific oblique frame with kay/kina or a sa-form pronoun. The verb's established valency determines the available construction.

Rowena planted tomatoes in three pots on the balcony. (actor voice)

Si Rowena is the actor pivot selected by nagtanim. Ng kamatis is the core patient, while sa tatlong paso and sa balkonahe express a planting site and broader location. English calls several of these phrases “objects” of prepositions, but Filipino markers encode more useful distinctions.

The secretary sent a reminder to the parents before noon. (actor voice)

The actor pivot uses ang, the conveyed item ng, and the recipient sa. A personal recipient would take kay, as in Nagpadala ang kalihim ng paalala kay Lorna.

💡
Under actor voice, do not ask only “What is the English object?” Separate a core affected/created thing, usually ng, from a location, endpoint, or recipient, usually sa/kay/kina.

Representative Actor-Voice Morphology

Actor voice is expressed by several affix families. Their meanings and root compatibility must be learned lexically.

Representative familyTypical domainExample basic form
-um-many actions, motions, and changesbumili, umalis
mag-many deliberate, extended, productive, or borrowed-root activitiesmagluto, mag-ayos
ma-/maka-many states, involuntary events, or abilitiesmatulog, makakita

These descriptions are tendencies, not definitions. Mag- does not always mean deliberate, and -um- does not carry one invariant English meaning. A root may select one family, several families with different meanings, or no ordinary actor-voice counterpart.

The Pivot Need Not Be a Deliberate Agent

The driver slipped on the wet stairs but was not hurt. (nonvolitional actor-voice pivot)

The driver did not intentionally slip. Ang drayber is still the selected participant. Likewise, a moving theme can be pivot:

Lumubog ang maliit na bangka matapos pasukin ng tubig.

The small boat sank after water entered it. (actor-voice change of state)

Calling these participants “subjects” may help with the English translation, but “actor pivot” better connects them to the marker-and-voice system. Actor voice covers the most actor-like sole participant even when agency or volition is absent.

A Specific Patient Can Remain Ng-Marked

Actor voice often introduces a nonspecific patient, but specificity is not the rule that assigns markers.

Gino read the report that you sent last night. (actor voice; identifiable non-pivot patient)

The relative clause identifies the report. It remains ng ulat because nagbasa selects Gino as pivot. Patient voice—Binasa ni Gino ang ulat...—would instead organize the clause around the report. The alternatives differ in discourse packaging, not simply a versus the.

A Controlled Comparison with Patient Voice

Pina cleaned a glass window before the guests arrived. (actor voice)

Pina cleaned the glass window before the guests arrived. (patient voice)

The first selects si Pina and marks the patient with ng. The second selects ang salaming bintana and changes Pina to ni Pina. Both are predicate-initial and both naturally translate as English active clauses. See patient voice for the second alignment.

Voice choice can imply a discourse difference: actor voice readily answers “What did Pina do?”; patient voice readily continues a discussion of the window. Context can override simple new/old-information expectations, so do not reduce the choice to one rigid formula.

Aspect Changes; Alignment Stays

The bili actor-voice family shows three aspectual views while retaining the actor pivot.

AspectFormEvent view
completedbumilibuying presented as bounded
incompletedbumibilibuying underway or habitual
contemplatedbibilibuying not begun

My sibling buys vegetables at the wholesale market every Tuesday. (incompleted habitual actor voice)

He or she will buy eggplants there tomorrow if the produce is fresh. (contemplated actor voice)

Tuwing Martes licenses the habitual reading of incompleted bumibili. Bukas supplies future time for contemplated bibili. Neither aspect changes the actor-voice marker map.

Pronouns and Word Order

Ang-form pronouns are enclitics in neutral predicate-first clauses and normally appear early.

We repaired the broken chairs in the meeting room yesterday. (exclusive we; actor voice)

Kami excludes the addressee. Inclusive tayo would include the addressee. The patient follows later, but flexibility of postverbal order does not change its ng marking.

With a full noun pivot, the patient may precede the actor for rhythm or weight:

Kumain ng mainit na arroz caldo ang mga boluntaryong galing sa magdamagang pagbabantay.

The volunteers coming from an overnight watch ate hot rice porridge. (actor pivot after patient)

The final ang phrase is the actor pivot. Reading the first postverbal noun as an English subject would reverse the event.

Questions, Negation, and Conversation

Fely did not bring an umbrella because the sky was clear this morning. (negative actor voice)

Negator hindi does not alter voice.

—Who will come along to collect the equipment? —Jomar and I will come after class. (exclusive group; actor voice)

The actor is the requested information, so actor voice is natural. Kami ni Jomar names a group containing the speaker and Jomar but not the addressee.

💡
Actor voice is especially natural when introducing or tracking what an actor does. It is not automatically required whenever the English sentence begins with an agent.

Common Mistakes

Giving both actor and patient pivot marking

❌ Nagtanim si Rowena ang kamatis sa paso.

Incorrect—actor-voice nagtanim selects Rowena as the sole pivot; the patient must be non-pivot.

✅ Nagtanim si Rowena ng kamatis sa paso.

Rowena planted tomatoes in a pot. (actor voice)

Marking a destination with ng

Wrong for ‘The nurses went to the barangay office’—ng tanggapan ng barangay is instead read as a modifier: ‘the nurses of the barangay office.’

The nurses went to the barangay office after the consultation. (sa-marked destination)

Using ng before a personal-name actor pivot

❌ Nagdala ng Fely ng payong sa paaralan.

Incorrect—a named actor pivot takes si, while the patient takes ng.

✅ Nagdala si Fely ng payong sa paaralan.

Fely brought an umbrella to school. (actor voice)

Changing markers without changing voice

❌ Bumili ni Gino ang lumang aparador.

Incorrect—actor-voice bumili conflicts with a ni actor and ang patient.

✅ Binili ni Gino ang lumang aparador.

Gino bought the old cabinet. (patient voice)

An actor-voice correction is Bumili si Gino ng lumang aparador; the two grammatical corrections package the event differently.

Key Takeaways

  • Actor voice selects an actor-like participant as ang-series pivot.
  • A core patient commonly takes ng, while locations, goals, and recipients commonly take sa/kay/kina.
  • Actor pivots include nonvolitional experiencers, movers, and changing entities, not only deliberate agents.
  • Specificity does not automatically turn an actor-voice patient into an ang phrase.
  • Aspect changes event contour while the actor-voice alignment remains stable.
