The enclitic daw/raw marks information as coming from another voice or source: someone said it, a notice reports it, or it is circulating as received information. It is evidential rather than tense marking. It can add distance from a claim, but it does not by itself mean that the speaker doubts or rejects the report.
One particle with two phonological forms
In careful standard Filipino, use raw after a word ending in a vowel or w/y, and daw elsewhere. The two forms have the same meaning.
Uuwi raw si Nena pagkatapos ng seminar.
Nena will reportedly go home after the seminar.
Darating daw ang piyesa bago magtanghali.
They say the replacement part will arrive before noon.
In uuwi raw, the immediately preceding host ends in a vowel. In darating daw, it ends in ng, a consonant sound. Contemporary speech shows some variation, especially in rapid conversation, but this r/d pattern is the careful default taught in this guide.
| Preceding sound | Careful default | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Vowel | raw | Sinabi raw... |
| w or y | raw | May raw... |
| Other consonant | daw | Bukas daw... |
The alternation responds to the word immediately before the particle, including another particle in a cluster.
Hindi pa raw dumarating ang resulta mula sa laboratoryo.
The laboratory result reportedly has not arrived yet.
Here raw follows vowel-final pa, not consonant-final hindi as an isolated word. See the d/r alternations in particles for the broader pattern.
Source meaning, not automatic doubt
Without daw/raw, the speaker presents the statement directly. With it, the speaker attributes the content to another source. The source may be reliable, uncertain, named, or unnamed.
Sarado ang tulay dahil sa pagkukumpuni.
The bridge is closed because of repairs.
Sarado raw ang tulay dahil sa pagkukumpuni.
The bridge is reportedly closed because of repairs.
The second sentence does not say βI think the report is false.β It says, roughly, βThat is the information I received.β In news-like or administrative contexts, an explicit source is often clearer than relying on the particle alone.
Ayon sa inhinyero, ligtas na raw gamitin ang gusali.
According to the engineer, the building is now safe to use.
When the source is already named, raw can still signal that the following proposition belongs to that source. It may also protect the current speaker from sounding as though they independently guarantee the claim.
By contrast, yata normally presents the current speaker's inference or uncertainty. Compare:
Nasa bulwagan daw si Omar.
Someone says Omar is in the hall.
Nasa bulwagan yata si Omar.
I think Omar is probably in the hall.
The first invites the question βWho said so?β; the second invites βWhat makes you think so?β The distinction is central even though both may translate loosely as apparently.
Placement and scope
As an enclitic, daw/raw normally appears in the early clitic domain after the first suitable full constituent, not wherever English places reportedly. It can occur inside a larger cluster with pronouns and particles.
Sa bagong gusali raw gaganapin ang pagpupulong.
The meeting will reportedly be held in the new building.
Ipinadala na raw nila ang mga papeles sa rehiyon.
They reportedly already sent the papers to the regional office.
Moving a constituent before the particle can make that constituent a discourse frame or focus, but the reportive scope often remains the entire proposition. Particle order is constrained; learners should not move raw to the end merely to mirror English.
The reportive can also occur in questions, commands, and prohibitions. In these uses, the reported source supplies the question or directive.
Saan daw natin kukunin ang mga kard ng pagkakakilanlan?
Where did they say we should get the identification cards?
Dalhin mo raw sa tanggapan ng pananalapi ang orihinal na resibo.
They said you should take the original receipt to the finance office.
Huwag daw kayong mag-ingay habang nagrerekord sila.
They said not to make noise while they're recording.
The command remains directed at mo or kayo; daw changes whose directive is being relayed. It does not soften the order in every context.
Aspect remains inside the reported proposition
Daw/raw does not select a verb aspect. Completed, incompleted, and contemplated forms retain their ordinary aspectual contrast while the whole proposition is attributed to a source.
Umalis daw si Berto kaninang umaga.
Berto reportedly left this morning.
Umaalis daw nang maaga si Berto nitong mga araw.
Berto has reportedly been leaving early these days.
Aalis daw nang maaga si Berto bukas.
Berto will reportedly leave early tomorrow.
These controlled examples keep the source status constant. Umalis presents a completed departure, umaalis an ongoing/repeated pattern, and aalis a contemplated departure. The time expressions support the most likely translations, but they do not turn the aspect forms into simple past, present, and future tenses.
The same time setting can support different reported viewpoints:
Kaninang tanghali, inayos na raw ni Berto ang sirang preno.
By noon today, Berto had reportedly repaired the faulty brake.
Kaninang tanghali, inaayos pa raw ni Berto ang sirang preno.
At noon today, Berto was reportedly still repairing the faulty brake.
Completed inayos na presents the repair as accomplished by the noon checkpoint; incompleted inaayos pa presents the same work as unfolding across it. The reportive meaning and the time setting stay constant.
Completed aspect can occur in a future-time conditional when completion is viewed relative to another event.
Kapag nakaalis na raw ang huling bus bago tayo dumating, sasakay tayo ng taksi.
If the last bus has reportedly already left before we arrive, we'll take a taxi.
The departure is completed relative to the contemplated arrival, even though the entire scenario is still in the future at speaking time.
A short exchange
A: Bakit walang tao sa tanggapan? B: Inilipat daw muna sa ikalawang palapag ang serbisyo.
A: Why is nobody in the office? B: They say the service has temporarily been moved to the second floor.
Speaker B relays information rather than claiming firsthand knowledge. Muna marks the location as temporary, while completed inilipat presents the transfer as accomplished.
Common Mistakes
Choosing the alternant from the wrong host
β Sinabi daw ng drayber na sarado ang daan.
Nonstandard under the careful default β sinabi ends in a vowel, so use raw.
β Sinabi raw ng drayber na sarado ang daan.
The driver reportedly said that the road was closed.
Treating daw as a marker of speaker uncertainty
β Madilim daw ang ulap, kaya palagay kong uulan.
Incorrect for the intended meaning β daw implies a reported source, not merely the speaker's own inference.
β Madilim ang ulap, kaya uulan yata.
The clouds are dark, so I think it will probably rain.
Copying English sentence-final placement
β Isasara bukas ang lumang klinika daw.
Unnatural neutral placement β the reportive enclitic belongs after the first suitable constituent.
β Isasara raw bukas ang lumang klinika.
The old clinic will reportedly be closed tomorrow.
Assuming reported information must be completed
β Dumating daw sila bukas.
Incorrect for an ordinary report about tomorrow β completed dumating conflicts with the intended contemplated arrival.
β Darating daw sila bukas.
They are reportedly arriving tomorrow.
Key Takeaways
- Daw/raw attributes a proposition, question, or directive to another source; it does not inherently express disbelief.
- Use raw after vowels and w/y, and daw after other consonants as the careful default.
- Place the enclitic in the normal early clitic domain and preserve natural particle ordering.
- Verb aspect continues to describe the reported event; the reportive particle does not create a tense.
- Distinguish reported evidence with daw/raw from the speaker's own inference with yata.
