Locative Voice

Locative voice selects a place-like participant as the pivot: an affected site, receiving surface, container, destination, source, addressee, or goal licensed by the verb. That pivot takes the ang series, while the actor takes the ng series and a placed or transferred theme commonly also takes ng. Traditional teaching calls this pokus sa ganapan or locative focus.

The central word is affected. A kitchen where someone happens to sing is merely a setting; a wall that receives paint or a person who receives a letter participates in the event more directly. Not every English phrase with in, on, or to can become a locative pivot.

The Core Marker Frame

RoleUsual markingIllustration
location/goal pivotang/si/sina or ang-form pronounang pinto, si Omar
actorng/ni/nina or ng-form pronounni Selo, niya
placed or transferred themecommonly ngng bagong karatula
another setting or endpointsa/kay/kinasa likod ng gusali

Many locative families use -an/-han, but that is not a recipe for manufacturing verbs. Surface forms and selected roles are lexical: lagay β†’ lagyan, punta β†’ puntahan, sulat β†’ sulatan, and tira β†’ tirhan must be learned as real families.

Selo fitted the clinic entrance with a new light. (locative voice)

Ang pasukan ng klinika is the affected site pivot. Ni Selo is the actor, and ng bagong ilaw is the thing attached.

πŸ’‘
In locative voice, English β€œin/on/to + place” often becomes the Filipino ang pivotβ€”but only when an established verb treats that place as affected, selected, or reached.

A Controlled Voice Comparison

Selo put a new sign on the clinic door. (actor voice)

Selo put a new sign on the clinic door. (locative voice)

The event can be the same. Actor-voice naglagay selects si Selo, marks the sign with ng, and leaves the door in a sa phrase. Locative-voice nilagyan selects the door, changes Selo to ni Selo, and keeps the sign non-pivot. Both normally translate as active English clauses; the second is not an optional English passive.

The locative version is especially useful when the door is already under discussion or when the speaker wants to track what was done to that surface. The actor-voice version readily continues a description of Selo's activities. These are tendencies, not automatic rules based on English word order.

Places, Surfaces, Containers, and Goals

The volunteers painted a yellow stripe on the edge of the stairs.

The stair edge is a receiving surface. The actor and applied theme both use ng-series marking.

The midwife went to the family at the far end of the village before sunrise.

Ang pamilya is the selected goal of pinuntahan. The broader place remains sa dulo ng baryo. A related actor-voice clause would use Pumunta ang komadrona sa pamilya..., organizing the event around the mover.

An animate addressee can also be goal-like:

Pinadalhan ni Marga ng kopya si Noel para may sarili siyang tala.

Marga sent Noel a copy so that he would have his own record.

Personal pivot si Noel is recipient/goal; ni Marga is actor and ng kopya is the conveyed theme.

The couple lived in the small apartment for five years.

The inhabited location is pivot. The duration uses sa loob ng limang taon; it does not alter the marker frame.

A Mere Setting Is Not Enough

Cora worked at the library while their office was being repaired.

The library simply locates the work. Filipino does not productively create a locative-voice verb meaning β€œwork the library” merely because English uses at. Locative voice requires a lexical construction in which the site is a participant, not free promotion of any adjunct.

This restriction explains why nilagyan ang pinto is ordinary, while existing pinagtrabahuhan has its own derivation and meanings rather than serving as a mechanical locative counterpart of nagtrabaho. Learn the whole verb and participant frame. The locative participant-marking page expands the role inventory.

Aspect Preserves the Alignment

Selo is putting a clear label on each box now.

He will put a red mark on the boxes intended for storage tomorrow.

Incompleted nilalagyan and contemplated lalagyan change event contour. The box remains locative pivot in both. Ngayon and bukas locate the events in time; voice itself supplies no tense.

Questions, Negation, and Conversation

The office did not send reminders to the applicants whose papers were already complete.

Negation denies the sending but leaves ang mga aplikante as recipient pivots.

β€”Which cabinet did you put a spare key in? β€”The cabinet beside the window.

Aling kabinet asks for the locative pivot. Actor mo and theme ng ekstrang susi remain non-pivots.

πŸ’‘
Voice, negation, aspect, and question force are separate choices. A denied or questioned location remains pivot when the verb stays in locative voice.

Common Mistakes

Incorrect as a complete locative-voice clause β€” the selected door pivot is missing.

Selo put a new sign on the door in the east corridor.

Incorrect β€” locative voice selects the stairs, so the volunteers cannot also take ang.

The volunteers painted a yellow stripe on the first step.

❌ Pinadalhan ni Marga ang kopya kay Noel.

Incorrect for recipient-pivot pinadalhan β€” this marker frame instead tries to select the copy.

Marga sent Noel a copy before the meeting ended.

Incorrect locative alignment β€” the apartment is the pivot and the couple is non-pivot actor.

The couple lived in the apartment near the old market.
