Filipino has borrowed words from Spanish, English, Chinese languages, Malay, other Philippine languages, and many additional sources. Adaptation is not a single spelling operation. A loan may acquire a conventional Filipino form, retain international spelling, coexist with an adapted variant, or be replaced in a particular context by an established Filipino expression.
More importantly, grammatical integration and orthographic adaptation are separate. Pizza can keep its source spelling while taking Filipino markers; trabaho is an old adapted loan that participates in a conventional Filipino verb family. Neither history nor appearance alone tells you which derivatives speakers actually use.
Four adaptation outcomes
| Outcome | Examples | What happens | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long-established adaptation | mesa, bintana, kuwento, trabaho | Filipino spelling and morphology are conventional | Neutral |
| Conventional phonemic respelling | dyip, drayber, basketbol, kompiyuter | The form reflects Filipino-oriented spelling | Neutral to careful |
| Retained source form | quiz, pizza, Wi-Fi, visa | Recognizability or international convention favors retention | Neutral in suitable domains |
| Coexisting variants | selfi / selfie | Adapted and source-oriented spellings circulate | Selfi is KWF-oriented; source forms are frequent in informal and commercial writing |
| Established Filipino equivalent | pulong, mensahe, saliksik | A familiar Filipino word may fit better than borrowing | Often preferable in careful prose |
The modern 28-letter alphabet permits f, j, v, z, and other expanded letters. It does not require every new loan to remain unchanged, and it does not license improvised respellings. Conventional usage decides word by word.
Established loans behave as Filipino words
Long-integrated loans can take Filipino markers, linkers, reduplication, and affixes without feeling like moment-by-moment code-switching.
Nagkukuwento ang lolo habang naghahanda kami ng hapunan.
Grandfather is telling stories while we prepare dinner.
Maagang nagtatrabaho sa panaderya ang kapatid ni Rosa.
Rosa's sibling works early at the bakery.
Kuwento and trabaho entered Filipino historically, but nagkukuwento and nagtatrabaho now belong to ordinary Filipino word families. The aspect forms are not produced by attaching an English tense ending or a Spanish conjugation. They use Filipino morphology.
Sumakay kami sa dyip papunta sa terminal bago bumuhos ang ulan.
We rode a jeep to the terminal before the rain poured down.
Naglaro ng basketbol ang mga nars pagkatapos ng kanilang turno.
The nurses played basketball after their shift.
The noun dyip and the activity basketbol use adapted spellings. Nagbasketbol may also occur as an established derived activity verb, written solidly because basketbol is treated as integrated.
Retention is also adaptation
Some words remain easy to recognize in source spelling and fit the expanded alphabet. They still enter Filipino phrase structure.
May quiz ba sa biyolohiya pagkatapos ng tanghalian?
Is there a biology quiz after lunch?
Umorder sila ng dalawang pizza para sa mga boluntaryo.
They ordered two pizzas for the volunteers.
The words quiz and pizza do not take English articles or plural endings here. Dalawang already supplies exact number, while ng marks the non-pivot phrase. Retained spelling does not import English grammar.
Names and brands are especially resistant to respelling. Wi-Fi retains its familiar form; BiΓ±an retains Γ± because that letter belongs to the established proper name.
Mahina ang Wi-Fi sa silid na malapit sa hagdan.
The Wi-Fi is weak in the room near the stairs.
The correct choice may vary by publication. Selfi is a Filipino-oriented adaptation, while selfie is widespread in informal and commercial text. A formal document should follow a stated style consistently rather than alternate at random.
Kumuha ang pangkat ng selfi sa harap ng natapos na tulay.
The group took a selfie in front of the completed bridge. (KWF-oriented spelling)
Adapted form versus source-spelled mixed form
One activity may appear in an integrated Filipino form or in a visibly English-based form. The spelling signals a real register choice.
Nagbasketbol kami sa palaruan bago nagsimula ang programa.
We played basketball on the court before the program began.
Nag-basketball kami sa palaruan bago nagsimula ang programa.
We played basketball on the court before the program began. (code-switched/informal spelling)
The first treats basketbol as an adapted Filipino base and joins the affix solidly. The second preserves English basketball and therefore marks the affix boundary with a hyphen. In careful Filipino prose, the integrated first form is normally the better choice. This controlled pair also shows that spelling and register can differ even when the event described is the same.
Hyphenation is not a stamp of grammaticality or prestige. It simply reveals a boundary before a visibly foreign base. The next page on English bases with Filipino affixes treats those mixed forms directly.
Derivation is conventional, not automatic
An adapted base may support several established derivatives: trabaho β magtrabaho, biyahe β bumiyahe, plano β planuhin. That does not mean every loan noun can become a verb with whichever affix matches an English translation.
Planuhin muna natin ang ruta dahil sarado ang tulay sa gabi.
Let's plan the route first because the bridge is closed at night.
Hindi pa aprubado ang visa niya, kaya hindi muna siya bibili ng tiket.
Her visa has not yet been approved, so she will not buy a ticket yet.
The natural clause uses aprubado ang visa, not an invented verb that treats visa as βto obtain a visa.β Filipino often prefers an existing verb plus a borrowed noun: kumuha ng visa, magpadala ng email, gumamit ng kompiyuter.
βGusto mo bang magkompiyuter buong hapon? βHindi. Gagamit lang ako ng kompiyuter para ayusin ang talaan.
βDo you want to use a computer all afternoon? βNo. I'll only use one to organize the list.
The exchange contrasts an attested but broad (conversational/technical) derivative with a more precise analytic expression. Even if magkompiyuter is documented, it does not name every possible computer task. Exact verbs such as βwrite,β βedit,β or βsendβ remain preferable when the action matters.
Loans and linkers
The linker listens to the final sound of the preceding word, not its etymology. A vowel-final modifier takes -ng, an n-final modifier takes -g, and another consonant-final modifier takes separate na.
Praktikal na proyekto ang mungkahi para sa maliit na opisina.
The proposal is a practical project for the small office.
Praktikal ends in l, so it takes separate na. By contrast, modernong opisina and bagong kompiyuter take suffixed -ng. Loan adaptation never suspends the native linker system.
Common Mistakes
Inventing a respelling from English pronunciation
β May kuwis ba sa klase bukas?
Incorrect standard spelling β quiz is conventionally retained.
β May quiz ba sa klase bukas?
Is there a quiz in class tomorrow?
Restoring source spelling to an integrated loan
β Mabagal ang jeep dahil siksikan ang kalsada.
Inconsistent in neutral Filipino prose β jeep retains the English form where adapted dyip is established.
β Mabagal ang dyip dahil siksikan ang kalsada.
The jeep is moving slowly because the road is congested.
The source spelling can occur in English or code-switched material, but the correction matches the neutral adapted register taught here.
Importing an English plural suffix
β Inayos ng teknisyan ang mga printers sa silid.
Incorrect in neutral Filipino β mga already marks plurality, and the noun does not need English -s.
β Inayos ng teknisyan ang mga printer sa silid.
The technician repaired the printers in the room.
Creating a verb mechanically from a loan noun
β Magvisa siya sa embahada bukas.
Unnatural for 'obtain a visa' β mag- does not automatically verbalize the noun with the intended meaning.
β Kukuha siya ng visa sa embahada bukas.
She will obtain a visa at the embassy tomorrow.
Key Takeaways
- Adaptation can mean respelling, retention, grammatical integration, or selection of an established equivalent.
- Source-spelled loans still take Filipino markers, number expressions, and linkers.
- Integrated loans can develop Filipino word families, but those families remain lexically restricted.
- A hyphen before an English base marks a mixed orthographic boundary; an adapted base usually joins the affix solidly.
- Check conventional usage instead of running every loan through one sound-to-letter or affix formula.
