Modal لازم بودن، مجبور بودن، امکان داشتن

Persian can express modality with full predicates rather than auxiliary words: لازم بودن presents something as necessary, مجبور بودن presents a person as compelled, and امکان داشتن presents an event or participant as having practical possibility. Their English translations may all contain must, have to, or can, but their Persian argument structures differ.

The most important contrast is the location of the participant. Impersonal لازم است and امکان دارد remain third-person singular; the performer is identified inside a following subjunctive clause or with برای. مجبور بودن, by contrast, agrees directly with the compelled person: مجبورم، مجبوری، مجبور بودند.

لازم است پیش از حرکت با راننده تماس بگیریم.

lâzem ast pish az harekat bâ rânande tamâs be-girim.

We need to contact the driver before departure. (neutral standard; impersonal necessity plus first-plural subjunctive)

به‌دلیل خرابی قطار مجبور شدیم شب بمانیم.

be-dalil-e kharâbi-ye qetâr majbur shodim shab be-mânim.

Because the train broke down, we had to stay overnight. (neutral; compelled participant controls embedded subjunctive)

امکان دارد جلسه به هفته‌ی بعد منتقل شود.

emkân dârad jalase be hafte-ye ba'd montaqel shavad.

The meeting may be moved to next week. (formal-neutral; impersonal possibility)

لازم است: necessity without a personal matrix subject

In لازم است برویم, است does not agree with “we.” The construction evaluates the action as necessary, and برویم supplies the performers through its first-person plural ending. که is possible—لازم است که برویم—but often omitted, especially in speech and compact prose.

برای ورود لازم است کارت شناسایی نشان بدهید.

barâ-ye vorud lâzem ast kârt-e shenâsâyi neshân be-dahid.

To enter, you need to show identification. (formal instruction; polite second-plural subjunctive)

لازم can also be an ordinary adjective modifying a noun or describing an entity: مدارک لازم “the necessary documents,” این مدرک لازم است “this document is necessary.” Do not confuse that personal/property use with impersonal modal لازم است + clause.

In colloquial Tehran speech, impersonal لازم است commonly contracts to لازمه. The matrix predicate still remains third-person singular; the embedded verb identifies the performer.

لازمه فردا زودتر بیای.

lâzeme fardâ zud-tar biyây.

You need to come earlier tomorrow. (informal, regional: Tehran; ـه is the matrix copula and بیای marks second singular)

Negating the matrix predicate gives absence of necessity:

لازم نیست امروز جواب بدهی.

lâzem nist emruz javâb be-dahi.

You do not need to answer today. (neutral; lack of necessity, not prohibition)

This is not the same as نباید جواب بدهی “you must not answer.” English learners often confuse do not have to with must not; Persian keeps them sharply apart as لازم نیست versus نباید.

💡
With impersonal لازم است, look to the ending of the subordinate subjunctive—not the copula—to discover who must act.

مجبور بودن and مجبور شدن: the compelled person as subject

مجبور بودن describes an existing constraint; مجبور شدن presents entry into that constrained state. Both agree with the person affected. A same-subject action commonly follows directly in the subjunctive, with optional که in more explicit prose.

مجبورم تا پایان شیفت صبر کنم.

majbur-am tâ pâyân-e shift sabr konam.

I have to wait until the end of the shift. (neutral; first-singular copula and controlled subjunctive)

آن‌ها مجبور بودند مسیر دیگری را انتخاب کنند.

ân-hâ majbur budand masir-e digari râ entekhâb konand.

They were forced to choose another route. (neutral standard; plural agreement in both clauses)

Formal nominal prose also uses مجبور به + noun/long infinitive + بودن/شدن: مجبور به ترک خانه شدند (formal). In ordinary conversation, a finite same-subject complement—مجبور شدند خانه را ترک کنند—is clearer and more natural. مجبور کردن is transitive “force someone”: it introduces the coercer and makes the compelled person an object.

The distinction between external coercion and practical necessity is contextual. مجبورم بروم can refer to a person’s orders, lack of transport, or any circumstance leaving no reasonable alternative. It is stronger and more personal than impersonal لازم است بروم.

امکان داشتن: possibility, feasibility, and participants

Bare امکان دارد + subjunctive is a conventional impersonal predicate. It often concerns whether an event may occur or is feasible. The matrix verb stays third-person singular; the embedded verb carries its own subject and may be active or passive.

امکان دارد باران تا غروب ادامه پیدا کند.

emkân dârad bârân tâ ghorub edâme peydâ konad.

The rain may continue until sunset. (formal-neutral; event possibility)

When feasibility is relative to a participant, Persian can mark that participant with برای: برای من امکان دارد... / امکان ندارد... (formal). More idiomatically in administrative prose, the possible action becomes a noun phrase: امکان تغییر تاریخ برای مسافران وجود دارد.

برای من امکان ندارد پیش از ساعت شش برسم.

barâ-ye man emkân na-dârad pish az sâ'at-e shesh be-rasam.

It is not possible for me to arrive before six. (formal; برای marks the constrained participant)

Possessive داشتن creates another pattern: امکانِ X را داشتن “have the opportunity/means to do X.” Here the person is an ordinary subject and داشتن agrees with that person.

این هفته امکان مرخصی گرفتن را ندارم.

in hafte emkân-e morakhkhasi gereftan râ na-dâram.

I don't have the opportunity to take leave this week. (formal-neutral; possessed possibility as object)

For everyday feasibility, impersonal می‌شود/نمی‌شود is often more conversational: میشه فردا بیای؟ (informal, regional: Tehran). احتمال دارد focuses more specifically on likelihood, while امکان دارد can cover both likelihood and practical possibility. The boundary is semantic rather than a rigid grammatical rule.

💡
Choose by perspective: لازم است evaluates an action, مجبورم profiles the constrained person, and امکان دارد evaluates whether an event can occur.

Complement mood and time

These predicates normally place a prospective, necessary, or merely possible action in the present subjunctive: برویم، بمانم، منتقل شود. The modal predicate itself can carry past time: لازم بود برویم، مجبور بودم بمانم، امکان داشت لغو شود. English often puts tense on a modal paraphrase; Persian locates the evaluation on بود/داشت while retaining subordinate mood.

لازم بود همان روز تصمیم بگیریم، اما اطلاعات کافی نداشتیم.

lâzem bud hamân ruz tasmim be-girim, ammâ ettelâ'ât-e kâfi na-dâshtim.

We needed to decide that same day, but we did not have enough information. (neutral; past necessity plus subjunctive)

See Present Subjunctive Formation for stem changes and the behavior of compound verbs.

A short dialogue

— لازم است خودت بروی؟ — بله، مجبورم اصل مدرک را تحویل بدهم.

— lâzem ast khod-at be-ravi? — bale, majbur-am asl-e madrak râ tahvil be-daham.

— Do you need to go yourself? — Yes, I have to hand in the original document. (neutral conversation; impersonal necessity versus personal compulsion)

Common Mistakes

1. Making impersonal لازم agree with the performer

❌ من لازمم فردا بروم.

Incorrect for modal necessity — use impersonal لازم است; the subjunctive ending marks ‘I.’

✅ لازم است فردا به‌صورت حضوری مراجعه کنم.

lâzem ast fardâ be-surat-e hozuri morâje'e konam.

I need to come in person tomorrow.

2. Using the long infinitive after لازم است

❌ لازم است زودتر رفتن.

Incorrect — the ordinary personal action is a finite subjunctive, not a long infinitive.

✅ لازم است پیش از تاریکی برگردیم.

lâzem ast pish az târiki bar-gardim.

We need to return before dark.

3. Mismatching the controller and subordinate ending

❌ ما مجبور بودیم صبر کند.

Incorrect — ما controls a first-plural subordinate verb: صبر کنیم.

✅ ما مجبور بودیم بیرون منتظر بمانیم.

mâ majbur budim birun montazer be-mânim.

We had to wait outside.

4. Confusing absence of necessity with prohibition

❌ لازم نیست وارد شوید یعنی ورود ممنوع است.

Incorrect interpretation — لازم نیست means ‘you need not,’ not ‘you must not.’

✅ لازم نیست منتظر بمانید؛ نتیجه را پیامک می‌کنیم.

lâzem nist montazer be-mânid; natije râ payâmak mi-konim.

You do not need to wait; we will text the result.

Key Takeaways

  • لازم است and امکان دارد are normally impersonal; person appears in the subordinate verb or in a برای phrase.
  • مجبور بودن/شدن agrees with the compelled person and normally controls a same-subject subjunctive.
  • امکانِ X را داشتن is an ordinary possessive construction whose subject has an opportunity or means.
  • Matrix negation matters: لازم نیست removes necessity, while نباید expresses prohibition.
