Persian distinguishes repeating an event once from doing something repeatedly over a stretch of time. دوباره and باز (هم) commonly mean “again”; هی presents a persistent series, often with impatience or emphasis (informal); تکرار کردن is a transitive predicate meaning “repeat/reproduce something.”
None of these words mechanically supplies verbal aspect. A single repeated event can use simple past—دوباره زنگ زد—whereas an unbounded series naturally combines هی with imperfective می—هی زنگ میزد. English again leaves much of this contrast implicit; Persian distributes it across the adverb, the verb form, and context.
The expression map
| Expression | Core contribution | Register/attitude |
|---|---|---|
| دوباره | another occurrence or restoration | neutral |
| باز / باز هم | again, yet again | neutral; باز alone is common in conversation and concise prose |
| هی | event after event, persistently | informal; often annoyed or vivid |
| چند بار | explicit bounded count | neutral |
| تکرار کردن | repeat a word, act, pattern, or event | neutral to formal |
بعد از شام دوباره به خواهرم زنگ زدم.
ba'd az shâm do-bâre be khâhar-am zang zadam.
After dinner, I called my sister again. (neutral; one additional completed call)
باز هم کلیدم را روی میز جا گذاشتم.
bâz ham kelid-am râ ru-ye miz jâ gozâshtam.
I left my key on the table again. (neutral conversation; recurring mishap)
همسایه دیشب هی در را میکوبید.
hamsâye dishab hey dar râ mi-kubid.
The neighbor kept banging on the door last night. (informal; persistent repeated action)
دوباره: repetitive and restitutive readings
دوباره can repeat the whole event or restore a previous state. در را دوباره باز کرد may mean that the person performed another opening event, or simply that the door became open again after being closed. Linguists call the first repetitive and the second restitutive. Persian, like English, often leaves the distinction to context.
تعمیرکار دستگاه را خاموش کرد و دوباره روشنش کرد.
ta'mirkâr dastgâh râ khâmush kard-o do-bâre rowshan-ash kard.
The technician turned the machine off and switched it back on. (neutral; restoration of the on-state)
این بخش را دوباره خواندم چون معنیاش روشن نبود.
in bakhsh râ do-bâre khândam chun ma'ni-ash rowshan na-bud.
I read this section again because its meaning was not clear. (neutral; repeated event)
Moving دوباره toward the beginning can give the recurrence discourse prominence: دوباره، قطار دیر رسید “Again, the train was late.” Its ordinary position is inside the clause, shortly before the object, complement, or predicate. There is flexibility because Persian word order is information-sensitive, but placing it between the nonverbal and verbal pieces of a tight compound is normally awkward.
باز, باز هم, and lexical باز
باز هم is an unambiguous adverbial “again/yet again.” باز alone can also mean “again,” particularly in concise prose and familiar speech, but it is identical in writing to adjective باز “open.” Syntax and context disambiguate them.
پنجره باز بود، اما باد باز آن را بست.
panjare bâz bud, ammâ bâd bâz ân râ bast.
The window was open, but the wind closed it again. (neutral; adjective باز, then adverb باز)
In everyday conversation بازم may represent باز هم (informal, regional: Tehran): بازم دیر کردی؟ “Were you late again?” It should not be mixed into otherwise formal standard prose without a register reason.
هی and imperfective aspect
هی does more than count repetitions. It portrays an action as continuing in installments and often conveys annoyance, insistence, or vivid involvement. That profile strongly favors می when the speaker views the series from within. It does not grammatically require the imperfective: a bounded narrative can package the whole series in the simple past, as in آنقدر هی زنگ زد تا جواب دادم “he or she kept calling until I answered.” Commands like هی نپرس! use the negative subjunctive/imperative pattern.
بچه هی میپرسید کی میرسیم.
bachche hey mi-porsid key mi-rasim.
The child kept asking when we would arrive. (informal; iterative imperfective)
هی پیام نده؛ وقتی آزاد شدم جواب میدهم.
hey payâm na-de; vaqti âzâd shodam javâb mi-daham.
Don't keep messaging me; I'll answer when I'm free. (informal directive; repeated-action warning)
دوباره زنگ زد is perfective even though the event has happened before: the sentence selects one new call as a whole. هی زنگ میزد presents many calls without selecting one endpoint. Repetition and imperfectivity often cooperate, but they are not the same category.
The same aspectual choice structures remembered routines; compare the broader account in Habitual Past and English Used To.
تکرار کردن and explicit counts
تکرار کردن takes what is reproduced as its object. A specific utterance or action commonly takes را. With an entire finite proposition, Persian often uses direct quotation or اینکه.
خواهش میکنم شماره را یک بار دیگر تکرار کنید.
khâhesh mi-konam shomâre râ yek bâr-e digar tekrâr konid.
Please repeat the number one more time. (polite neutral; transitive تکرار کردن)
مربی حرکت را سه بار تکرار کرد.
morabbi harekat râ se bâr tekrâr kard.
The coach repeated the movement three times. (neutral; bounded count)
دوباره تکرار کردن can be redundant when both simply mean “repeat again,” but it is not inherently ungrammatical. Speakers use it emphatically or when دوباره locates a new repetition episode. Edited prose often prefers one marker unless the extra emphasis is intended.
A short dialogue
— باز زنگ زد؟ — آره، از صبح هی تماس میگیرد.
— bâz zang zad? — âre, az sobh hey tamâs mi-girad.
— Did he call again? — Yeah, he's been calling over and over since morning. (informal; one recurrence versus an ongoing series)
Common Mistakes
1. Assuming a repeated event must have می
❌ دیروز دوباره میافتادم و پایم شکست.
Wrong for one completed fall — دوباره does not itself require imperfective می.
✅ دیروز دوباره زمین خوردم و زانویم درد گرفت.
diruz do-bâre zamin khordam-o zânu-yam dard gereft.
Yesterday I fell again and my knee started hurting.
2. Assuming هی always requires می
❌ هی همیشه فعل را با می میآورد.
Incorrect rule — هی often combines with imperfective aspect, but a bounded repeated series can use the simple past.
✅ آنقدر هی زنگ زد تا بالاخره جواب دادم.
ân-qadr hey zang zad tâ belâkhare javâb dâdam.
He or she kept calling until I finally answered. (informal; bounded repeated series in the simple past)
3. Treating باز as necessarily “open”
❌ باز دیر رسید یعنی در باز بود.
Incorrect interpretation — before دیر رسید, باز is the adverb ‘again,’ not the adjective ‘open.’
✅ باز هم اتوبوس دیر رسید.
bâz ham otobus dir resid.
The bus was late yet again.
4. Making تکرار agree with the subject
❌ آنها سؤال را تکرارند کردند.
Incorrect — tense and agreement belong only on the light verb کردند.
✅ خبرنگارها همان سؤال را چند بار تکرار کردند.
khabarnegar-hâ hamân so'âl râ chand bâr tekrâr kardand.
The reporters repeated the same question several times.
Key Takeaways
- دوباره/باز هم select another occurrence; هی presents a persistent series and is informal.
- Repetition does not automatically trigger می: use simple past for one new completed event and imperfective for an unbounded series.
- تکرار کردن is a transitive compound, so a specific repeated item normally takes را.
- Adverb position reflects scope and information structure; keep tight compound-verb pieces together.
