Persian often packages “become,” “come to,” “start,” or “fall into” inside a lexical compound. شدن is broadly available in change-of-state predicates such as ساکت شدن; گرفتن، افتادن, and آمدن occur in narrower combinations such as آتش گرفتن، به راه افتادن, and به جوش آمدن.
These verbs contribute an onset or transition, but they are not interchangeable aspect markers. The whole predicate must be learned as a lexical unit. English encourages broad metaphors—fall asleep, catch fire, come alive—yet Persian chooses its own light verb for each conventional combination.
Four change profiles
| Light verb | Typical profile | Established examples |
|---|---|---|
| شدن | broad transition into a property/state | ساکت شدن، خسته شدن، تاریک شدن |
| گرفتن | onset, seizure, or acquisition | آتش گرفتن، گریهاش گرفتن، اوج گرفتن |
| افتادن | entry into an activity/state, often abrupt | به راه افتادن، به گریه افتادن، از کار افتادن |
| آمدن | arrival at a conventional resultant state | به جوش آمدن، به هوش آمدن، به دنیا آمدن |
وقتی مدیر وارد شد، همه ساکت شدند.
vaqti modir vâred shod, hame sâket shodand.
When the manager came in, everyone fell silent. (neutral; broad شدن change)
حوله کنار بخاری آتش گرفت.
howle kenâr-e bokhâri âtash gereft.
The towel caught fire beside the heater. (neutral; lexical آتش گرفتن)
بعد از ده دقیقه اتوبوس به راه افتاد.
ba'd az dah daqiqe otobus be râh oftâd.
After ten minutes, the bus got moving. (neutral; inceptive به راه افتادن)
آب کمکم به جوش آمد.
âb kam-kam be jush âmad.
The water gradually came to a boil. (neutral; conventional result with آمدن)
شدن: productive but not unlimited
شدن combines readily with adjectives and some nouns to present the subject as entering a state: گرم شدن، روشن شدن، بیمار شدن. The changing participant is the grammatical subject, so there is no direct-object را. Its transitive counterpart often uses کردن: اتاق را گرم کردن / اتاق گرم شدن.
هوا نزدیک غروب ناگهان سرد شد.
havâ nazdik-e ghorub nâgahân sard shod.
Near sunset, the weather suddenly turned cold. (neutral; achievement-like onset)
هوا داشت آرامآرام تاریک میشد.
havâ dâsht ârâm-ârâm târik mi-shod.
It was gradually getting dark. (neutral; progressive transition)
The second sentence does not assert that full darkness was reached. Lexical meaning plus aspect determines whether the transition is instantaneous, gradual, repeated, or incomplete. Read Transitive and Intransitive Pairs for the causative alternation.
گرفتن: onset and experiencer constructions
In آتش گرفتن, the entity that ignites is the subject. In گریهام گرفت, however, Persian uses a body-state/experiencer pattern: the clitic ـم marks the experiencer, while گریه گرفتن presents crying as something that comes over that person. This is structurally unlike English I started crying.
تا عکس قدیمی را دید، گریهاش گرفت.
tâ aks-e qadimi râ did, gerye-ash gereft.
As soon as he or she saw the old photo, he or she started crying. (neutral conversation; experiencer clitic)
اوج گرفتن means “rise/intensify/gain momentum” (formal-neutral) and is especially common with prices, conflict, disease, or activity. It profiles development toward a high point rather than merely the first instant.
بحث در نیمهی دوم جلسه اوج گرفت.
bahs dar nime-ye dovvom-e jalase owj gereft.
The debate intensified in the second half of the meeting. (formal-neutral; developmental onset)
افتادن and آمدن: fixed paths into a state
به گریه افتادن profiles an overt entry into crying and can sound more written or dramatic than ordinary گریهاش گرفتن (neutral to literary, often dramatic). They are not pure register variants: گریهاش گرفت can describe the impulse or tears coming over an experiencer, while به گریه افتاد presents the person as beginning to cry. به راه افتادن is neutral for vehicles, people, processes, and campaigns beginning to move or function. The opposite-looking از کار افتادن means “stop working”; its preposition and noun are inseparable parts of the lexical predicate.
چاپگر درست وسط کار از کار افتاد.
châpgar dorost vasat-e kâr az kâr oftâd.
The printer stopped working right in the middle of the job. (neutral; lexical cessation, not physical falling)
With آمدن, the prepositional element often names the destination state: به هوش آمدن، به جوش آمدن. The subject undergoes the transition. For a causer, Persian changes the predicate: آب را جوش آوردن “bring the water to a boil,” کسی را به هوش آوردن “revive someone.”
بیمار چند دقیقه بعد به هوش آمد.
bimâr chand daqiqe ba'd be hush âmad.
The patient regained consciousness a few minutes later. (neutral; intransitive change)
Idiomatic limits and subject roles
There is no fully productive rule that predicts the light verb. آتش شدن means “turn into fire” in a suitable context, not “catch fire”; راه شدن has other colloquial meanings and is not the ordinary equivalent of به راه افتادن. Likewise, literal English fall does not license افتادن in every metaphor.
This arbitrariness must be learned honestly. Store the whole infinitive, its preposition, and its transitive partner where one exists. The light verb still carries all finite morphology: از کار میافتد، آتش نگرفت، به جوش آمده بود.
A short dialogue
— چرا دستگاه خاموش شد؟ — نمیدانم؛ اول صدا داد، بعد از کار افتاد.
— cherâ dastgâh khâmush shod? — nemi-dânam; avval sedâ dâd, ba'd az kâr oftâd.
— Why did the machine turn off? — I don't know; first it made a noise, then it stopped working. (neutral conversation; two lexical changes)
Common Mistakes
1. Adding را to the changing subject
❌ هوا را ناگهان تاریک شد.
Incorrect — هوا is the subject undergoing the change, not an object.
✅ آسمان ناگهان تیره شد.
âsemân nâgahân tire shod.
The sky suddenly grew dark.
2. Translating “catch fire” word for word with شدن
❌ سیم برق آتش شد.
Wrong for ‘caught fire’ — آتش شدن means becoming fire, not the established onset predicate.
✅ سیم برق داخل دیوار آتش گرفت.
sim-e barq dâkhel-e divâr âtash gereft.
The electrical wire inside the wall caught fire.
3. Omitting the lexical preposition
❌ چاپگر کار افتاد.
Incorrect for ‘the printer stopped working’ — the established predicate includes از.
✅ قطار با بیست دقیقه تأخیر به راه افتاد.
qetâr bâ bist daqiqe ta'khir be râh oftâd.
The train got underway twenty minutes late.
4. Putting aspect on the nonverbal element
❌ دستگاه میاز کار افتاد.
Incorrect — می attaches to افتادن, the verbal element.
✅ این دستگاه زیر فشار زیاد از کار میافتد.
in dastgâh zir-e feshâr-e ziyâd az kâr mi-oftad.
This machine stops working under heavy load.
Key Takeaways
- شدن is broadly productive for changes; گرفتن، افتادن, and آمدن occur in lexically selected compounds.
- The entity changing state is normally the subject, but experiencer constructions such as گریهاش گرفت use a clitic.
- Simple past can present the onset as reached; imperfective/progressive forms can show repetition or an incomplete transition.
- Memorize the complete predicate, including به/از, because changing the light verb or preposition changes the meaning.
