شدن as Become, Happen, Possible, and Passive

Few Persian verbs do as many jobs as شدن. It can mean “become” in هوا سرد شد, stand alone in چه شد؟ “what happened?”, form an impersonal possibility in می‌شود رفت “one can go,” or help form a passive in نامه فرستاده شد “the letter was sent.” It is also the light verb in lexical predicates such as خسته شدن “get tired” and تمام شدن “end.”

English often translates several of these uses with be, get, become, or a passive, so translation is not enough. The reliable analysis comes from the expression before شدن, the form after a modal می‌شود, whether را appears, and which noun phrase controls agreement.

A diagnostic map

UseTypical structureExampleMain diagnostic
become / changesubject + property + شدنهوا سرد شدsubject acquires a property

impersonal possibilityfrozen می‌شود + short infinitiveمی‌شود نشستgeneric actor; modal remains singular

These are related meanings, not five unrelated homonyms. شدن consistently moves attention toward a resulting state or realized event. What changes is whether that result is a new property, an event outcome, a possibility, or the patient-oriented presentation of someone else's action.

شدن meaning “become”

With a noun or adjective as its complement, شدن presents the subject as entering a new category or state. The subject undergoes the change; it is not a direct object and therefore does not take را.

بعد از غروب هوا ناگهان سرد شد.

ba'd az ghorub havâ nâgahân sard shod.

After sunset, the weather suddenly became cold. (neutral change of state)

خواهرم پس از سال‌ها آموزش خلبان شد.

khâhar-am pas az sâl-hâ âmuzesh khalabân shod.

After years of training, my sister became a pilot. (neutral; entry into a role)

نگران نباش؛ حال پدربزرگ بهتر شده است.

negarân na-bâsh; hâl-e pedarbozorg behtar shode ast.

Don't worry; Grandpa's condition has improved. (neutral; perfect change relevant now)

The corresponding کردن expression often adds a causer: بخاری اتاق را گرم کرد “the heater warmed the room” versus اتاق گرم شد “the room became warm.” English can use warm on both sides; Persian frequently exposes the valency difference in its light verb.

💡
With کردن, look for a causer and an affected object. With change-of-state شدن, that affected participant becomes the subject. This alternation explains باز کردن/شدن، گرم کردن/شدن، خسته کردن/شدن.

شدن meaning “happen” or “turn out”

Standalone شدن can ask what happened or refer to the outcome of a situation. This use is especially frequent in conversation. It may take a که clause explaining the circumstance or result.

دیشب در جلسه چه شد؟

dishab dar jalase che shod?

What happened at the meeting last night? (neutral conversation)

چه شد که تصمیم گرفتی برگردی؟

che shod ke tasmim gerefti bar-gardi?

What happened that made you decide to come back? (neutral conversation)

در نهایت قرار شد جلسه را به دوشنبه بیندازیم.

dar nehâyat qarâr shod jalase râ be doshanbe bi-andâzim.

In the end, it was agreed that we would move the meeting to Monday. (neutral standard; resulting arrangement)

قرار شد is best learned as a conventional predicate meaning “it was arranged/agreed.” It has a result meaning, but treating every instance as the passive of قرار کردن would give the wrong lexical analysis. This is an example of why whole predicates matter.

Lexical شدن compounds are not automatically passive

In خسته شدن، تمام شدن، شروع شدن، گم شدن, the nonverbal element and شدن form an established predicate. Some describe an inchoative change with no implied agent; others allow a context in which an external cause is plausible.

بچه‌ها بعد از پیاده‌روی طولانی خسته شدند.

bachche-hâ ba'd az piyâde-ravi-ye tulâni khaste shodand.

The children got tired after the long walk. (neutral lexical change; not passive)

فیلم کمی بعد از نیمه‌شب تمام شد.

film kami ba'd az nime-shab tamâm shod.

The film ended shortly after midnight. (neutral lexical predicate)

در انبار با وزش باد باز شد.

dar-e anbâr bâ vazesh-e bâd bâz shod.

The warehouse door opened in the wind. (neutral intransitive change; no human agent implied)

The last clause can be translated “was opened” in another context, but با وزش باد favors a change caused by wind rather than a syntactic passive. The detailed valency contrast is covered in Transitive and Intransitive Pairs with کردن and شدن.

Impersonal می‌شود meaning “it is possible”

Modal می‌شود is a frozen third-person singular followed by a short infinitive: رفت، دید، کرد. The missing actor is generic. A specific object may take را, which proves that it has not become the subject of a passive.

از این راه می‌شود سریع‌تر به ایستگاه رسید.

az in râh mi-shavad sari'-tar be istgâh resid.

You can reach the station faster by this route. (neutral impersonal possibility)

این مشکل را می‌شود بدون هزینه حل کرد.

in moshkel râ mi-shavad bedun-e hazine hall kard.

This problem can be solved at no cost. (neutral impersonal modal; مشکل is an object)

Informal Tehran commonly pronounces and writes this modal as میشه in dialogue and messages. Formal prose keeps می‌شود; very formal or academic prose may prefer invariant می‌توان.

می‌شه امشب زودتر راه بیفتیم؟

mi-she emshab zudtar râh bi-oftim?

Can we set off earlier tonight? (informal, regional: Tehran)

The presence of a personal subjunctive بیفتیم makes “we” recoverable even though modal میشه itself is singular. For the short-infinitive pattern, see Impersonal می‌شود.

شدن as passive auxiliary

A passive presents the affected participant as subject and backgrounds an external actor. With a simple verb, Persian uses its past participle before شدن: نوشتن → نوشته شد. With many compound predicates, the nonverbal base combines directly with شدن: دعوت کردن → دعوت شدن.

نامه‌ی پذیرش دیروز برای همه‌ی داوطلبان فرستاده شد.

nâme-ye paziresh diruz barâ-ye hame-ye dâvtalabân ferestâde shod.

The acceptance letter was sent to all the applicants yesterday. (formal-neutral passive)

مهمان‌ها برای ساعت هشت دعوت شده‌اند.

mehmân-hâ barâ-ye sâ'at-e hasht da'vat shode-and.

The guests have been invited for eight o'clock. (neutral passive perfect; human plural agreement)

Compare passive نامه نوشته شد with modal می‌شود نامه را نوشت. In the passive, نامه is a subject, carries no را, and شدن carries the clause's tense and agreement. In the modal, نامه را remains an object, می‌شود is frozen singular, and نوشت is a short infinitive.

این متن را می‌شود در یک ساعت ترجمه کرد.

in matn râ mi-shavad dar yek sâ'at tarjome kard.

This text can be translated in an hour. (impersonal modal)

این متن در یک ساعت ترجمه شد.

in matn dar yek sâ'at tarjome shod.

This text was translated in an hour. (passive event)

💡
Use a bundle of diagnostics. A short infinitive and frozen singular می‌شود indicate modality; a patient subject and an inflected passive base indicate passive voice; a property complement points to “become.”

Negation, conjugation, and stress

All finite morphology belongs on شدن: سرد نشد، تمام نمی‌شود، فرستاده نشده است. Do not attach نـ to the adjective, noun, or passive base. Present stem شو appears in می‌شود، بشود، نشود; past stem شد appears in شد، نشد، شده.

اگر عجله نکنیم، کار امروز تمام نمی‌شود.

agar ajale na-konim, kâr emruz tamâm nemi-shavad.

If we don't hurry, the work won't be finished today. (neutral; negative lexical/result reading)

درخواست من هنوز تأیید نشده است.

darkhâst-e man hanuz ta'yid na-shode ast.

My application has not been approved yet. (formal-neutral passive perfect)

Stress is not written in Persian orthography. In a neutral affirmative compound such as تمام شد, the nonverbal element normally carries the predicate's main prominence and شد is comparatively weak; standalone چه شد؟ follows the ordinary stress of the simple verb. Finite negation overrides the neutral compound pattern: نَـ is prominent in نَشُد, and نِـ in نِمی‌شود. Corrective focus can instead highlight سرد “cold” or شد “became,” but it does not change the placement of می‌ or نـ. The broader prosodic pattern appears on Stress in Compound and Light Verbs.

Common Mistakes

1. Using کردن when the subject undergoes the change

❌ هوا بعد از غروب سرد کرد.

Incorrect for ‘the weather became cold’ — کردن requires a causer and an affected object.

✅ هوای کویر بعد از غروب سرد شد.

havâ-ye kavir ba'd az ghorub sard shod.

The desert air became cold after sunset.

2. Using a bare past stem as a simple-verb passive base

❌ پیام ساعت ده فرستاد شد.

Incorrect — the passive of simple فرستادن requires past participle فرستاده.

✅ پیام ساعت ده فرستاده شد.

peyâm sâ'at-e dah ferestâde shod.

The message was sent at ten.

3. Pluralizing impersonal modal می‌شود

❌ این کارها را می‌شوند فردا انجام داد.

Incorrect — modal می‌شود is frozen singular; the plural phrase remains a را-marked object.

✅ این کارها را می‌شود فردا انجام داد.

in kâr-hâ râ mi-shavad fardâ anjâm dâd.

These tasks can be done tomorrow.

4. Putting negation on the nonverbal element

❌ پرونده هنوز ناتأیید شده است.

Wrong for the intended event negation ‘has not been approved’ — ناتأیید is an adjective-like lexical form, not verbal negation.

✅ پرونده هنوز تأیید نشده است.

parvande hanuz ta'yid na-shode ast.

The case has not yet been approved.

5. Keeping را on a passive or inchoative subject

❌ در را با صدای بلندی بسته شد.

Incorrect — در is subject of بسته شد here, not a direct object.

✅ در با صدای بلندی بسته شد.

dar bâ sedâ-ye bolandi baste shod.

The door closed with a loud noise. (change or contextually passive event)

Key Takeaways

  • شدن unifies change and result, but its syntax distinguishes “become,” “happen,” lexical predicates, possibility, and passive voice.
  • Property complements point to change; standalone چه شد؟ asks about an event or outcome.
  • Frozen می‌شود + short infinitive is impersonal modal; it can retain a را-marked object.
  • A passive promotes the patient to subject and puts tense, negation, and agreement on شدن.
  • Learn lexical شدن compounds as whole predicates, and place می‌ and نـ on the light verb.
