اهمیت داشتن means “to matter, be important, have significance.” The entity or issue that matters is the grammatical subject; the person, institution, or goal for which it matters is normally introduced by برای: این موضوع برای من اهمیت دارد “This issue matters to me.”
The predicate uses stative داشتن, so its neutral present has no می: اهمیت دارم، اهمیت دارد، اهمیت دارند. Its past is اهمیت داشت, and its modern subjunctive is periphrastic اهمیت داشته باشد. The closely related مهم بودن is generally more direct and conversational, while اهمیت داشتن is especially at home in reasoned, professional, and academic discussion.
Principal parts and current forms
| Form | Persian | Romanization | Use/register |
|---|---|---|---|
| infinitive | اهمیت داشتن | ahammiyat dâshtan | to matter; formal-neutral |
| past base | اهمیت داشت | ahammiyat dâsht | اهمیت داشتم |
| present base | اهمیت دار | ahammiyat dâr | اهمیت دارد |
| past participle | اهمیت داشته | ahammiyat dâshte | اهمیت داشته است |
| subjunctive | اهمیت داشته باشد | ahammiyat dâshte bâshad | that it matter |
| imperative | — | — | no ordinary command meaning “matter!” |
The absence of a useful imperative is semantic, not a missing conjugation: a speaker cannot normally order an entity to possess significance. Instructions instead say این نکته را جدی بگیر “take this point seriously” or به این موضوع اهمیت بده “give importance to this issue,” the latter being a different predicate with دادن.
کیفیت کار از سرعت تحویل بیشتر اهمیت دارد.
keyfiyat-e kâr az sor'at-e tahvil bishtar ahammiyat dârad.
The quality of the work matters more than the delivery speed. (formal-neutral)
بعید است این اختلاف کوچک برای نتیجهی نهایی اهمیت داشته باشد.
ba'id ast in ekhtelâf-e kuchek barâ-ye natije-ye nehâyi ahammiyat dâshte bâshad.
It is unlikely that this small discrepancy will matter to the final result. (formal; subjunctive)
Six-person paradigm
Although abstract issues are often third-person, personal subjects are possible: تو برای من اهمیت داری means “you matter to me.” The table is therefore fully usable, provided the subject is the thing or person evaluated as significant.
| Person | Present | Simple past | Present perfect | Present subjunctive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | اهمیت دارم | اهمیت داشتم | اهمیت داشتهام | اهمیت داشته باشم |
| you (sg.)
The present absence of می and the compound subjunctive with داشته باشـ follow ordinary stative داشتن, explained on داشتن dâshtan: to Have.
شاید نظر من برای شما اهمیت نداشته باشد، اما باید آن را بگویم.
shâyad nazar-e man barâ-ye shomâ ahammiyat nadâshte bâshad, ammâ bâyad ân râ be-guyam.
My opinion may not matter to you, but I have to say it. (formal-neutral)
The evaluator or experiencer with برای
برای + noun/pronoun names the perspective relative to which something matters: برای من، برای شرکت، برای سلامت عمومی. English uses to in “matters to me,” but Persian uses برای, not recipient به. The phrase can precede the subject for contrast, yet the subject still controls agreement.
این فرصت برای دانشجویان سال آخر اهمیت ویژهای دارد.
in forsat barâ-ye dâneshjuyân-e sâl-e âkhar ahammiyat-e vizhe-i dârad.
This opportunity is especially significant for final-year students. (formal-neutral)
برای من مهم نیست چه کسی اول پیشنهاد را مطرح کرد.
barâ-ye man mohem nist che kasi avval pishnehâd râ matrah kard.
It doesn't matter to me who first raised the proposal. (neutral; مهم بودن alternative)
A pronominal برای phrase may host a clitic: برایم اهمیت دارد، برایت مهم است. This ـم marks the evaluator, not possession of اهمیت and not subject agreement. Formal prose may prefer expanded برای من when contrast or clarity matters.
اعتماد شما برایمان اهمیت زیادی دارد.
e'temâd-e shomâ barâ-yemân ahammiyat-e ziyâdi dârad.
Your trust matters greatly to us. (formal-neutral; clitic on برای)
Degree and comparison
Importance is gradable. Common patterns are خیلی / بسیار اهمیت داشتن, اهمیت زیادی / کمی داشتن, اهمیت ویژهای داشتن, and comparative بیشتر / کمتر اهمیت داشتن. بسیار is more formal than conversational خیلی. With a modified noun phrase such as اهمیت زیادی, Ezafe links اهمیت to its adjective.
در این مرحله جزئیات فنی کمتر اهمیت دارند.
dar in marhale joz'iyât-e fanni kam-tar ahammiyat dârand.
At this stage, the technical details matter less. (formal-neutral; plural subject)
زمانبندی دقیق برای اجرای طرح اهمیت بسیار زیادی داشت.
zamân-bandi-ye daqiq barâ-ye ejrâ-ye tarh ahammiyat-e besyâr ziyâdi dâsht.
Precise scheduling was extremely important for implementing the plan. (formal report)
Negation اهمیت ندارد can mean either “has no importance” or the discourse formula “it doesn't matter.” Degree and context distinguish categorical irrelevance from a reassuring dismissal.
فرقی ندارد کدام صندلی را انتخاب کنی؛ واقعا اهمیت ندارد.
farqi nadârad kodâm sandali râ entekhâb koni; vâqe'an ahammiyat nadârad.
It doesn't matter which chair you choose; it really makes no difference. (neutral standard)
اهمیت داشتن versus مهم بودن
Both constructions describe importance. مهم بودن is shorter, very frequent in speech, and natural with clauses: مهم است که زود برسیم. اهمیت داشتن more readily treats importance as a scale or property and is common in analytical prose: این عامل اهمیت زیادی دارد. Neither is inherently archaic.
اهمیت دادن به changes the participant structure. It has an agent who assigns attention or value to a target: او به وقت دیگران اهمیت میدهد “She values other people's time.” Do not treat اهمیت دارد and اهمیت میدهد as tense variants of one predicate.
او به ظاهر اهمیت نمیدهد، اما کیفیت برایش مهم است.
u be zâher ahammiyat nemi-dahad, ammâ keyfiyat barâ-yash mohem ast.
She doesn't care about appearances, but quality matters to her. (neutral; دادن versus بودن)
Tehran conversational forms
Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran) uses اهمیت داره / نداره, but often prefers مهمه / مهم نیست. Personal forms include اهمیت دارین / دارن. The content is formal-leaning even when the ending is colloquial.
مهم نیست کجا بریم؛ فقط میخوام یه کم استراحت کنم.
mohem nist kojâ berim; faqat mi-khâm ye kam esterâhat konam.
It doesn't matter where we go; I just want to rest a little. (informal, regional: Tehran)
نظرت برام اهمیت داره، پس راحت حرف بزن.
nazar-at barâm ahammiyat dâre, pas râhat harf be-zan.
Your opinion matters to me, so speak freely. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
1. Adding می to stative داشتن
❌ این نکته خیلی اهمیت میدارد.
Incorrect in neutral modern Persian — present اهمیت داشتن uses دارد without می.
✅ این نکته در تفسیر نتیجه اهمیت زیادی دارد.
in nokte dar tafsir-e natije ahammiyat-e ziyâdi dârad.
This point is highly important in interpreting the result.
2. Copying English “to me” with به
❌ این موضوع به من اهمیت دارد.
Incorrect — the evaluator takes برای; به belongs to the separate predicate اهمیت دادن.
✅ این موضوع برای همهی اعضای گروه اهمیت دارد.
in mowzu' barâ-ye hame-ye a'zâ-ye goruh ahammiyat dârad.
This issue matters to every member of the group.
3. Building a hybrid subjunctive
❌ بعید است این تفاوت اهمیت دارد باشد.
Incorrect — the modern subjunctive is the single periphrastic form داشته باشد.
✅ بعید است این تفاوت کوچک اهمیت داشته باشد.
ba'id ast in tafâvot-e kuchek ahammiyat dâshte bâshad.
It is unlikely that this small difference matters.
4. Confusing having importance with assigning it
❌ این نتیجه به پژوهشگران اهمیت میدهد.
Incorrect for ‘this result matters to researchers’ — اهمیت دادن makes the subject an agent assigning importance.
✅ این نتیجه برای پژوهشگران حوزه اهمیت دارد.
in natije barâ-ye pazhuheshgarân-e howze ahammiyat dârad.
This result matters to researchers in the field.
