کردن or شدن?

Choose کردن when the subject causes or carries out an event affecting something else: مینا اتاق را گرم کرد “Mina warmed the room.” Choose شدن when the subject is the thing that changes or undergoes the event: اتاق گرم شد “the room became warm.” The decisive question is not which English verb appears, but which participant Persian presents as the grammatical subject.

The pairing is widespread in light-verb constructions, yet it is not automatic. Some شدن forms describe an ordinary change of state; others have a passive-like meaning, and many predicates have a conventional light verb that cannot simply be exchanged. This page gives a decision framework; the complete alternation is treated on کردن versus شدن Transitivity Pairs.

The decision tree

  1. Does the subject deliberately act or cause a result in a separate object? Choose کردن; a specific object commonly takes را.
  2. Does the subject itself enter a new state? Choose شدن and do not add a second object for that same participant.
  3. Was the subject affected by an intentional action such as invitation, publication, or cancellation? شدن can give a passive-like reading.
  4. Must the agent be named while the affected participant remains the subject? Use the full passive pattern, not a bare کردن/شدن swap.
  5. Is the pairing unfamiliar? Verify the whole lexical predicate. Persian does not permit every nonverbal element with both light verbs.

If there is a causer and an object, choose کردن

With کردن, the clause looks outward from an agent or cause toward an affected object. The nonverbal element names the result or activity; کردن supplies the transitive verbal frame. When that object is specific, را is normally present.

لطفا صدای تلویزیون را کمتر کنید.

lotfan sedâ-ye televizion râ kamtar konid.

Please turn the television down. (careful spoken standard)

تکنسین دستگاه را پیش از تحویل آزمایش کرد.

teknisin dastgâh râ pish az tahvil âzmâyesh kard.

The technician tested the device before delivery. (formal-neutral)

باران شدید خیابان‌های پایین شهر را خیس کرد.

bârân-e shadid khiyâbân-hâ-ye pâ'in-e shahr râ khis kard.

The heavy rain made the downtown streets wet. (neutral)

The causer need not be human: rain can make streets wet. What matters is the two-part event structure—one participant causes a change in another. English can use the same verb both transitively and intransitively (“The heat melted the ice / the ice melted”), but Persian often signals the alternation through the light verb.

💡
With کردن, locate the affected object. If it is specific, the combination of that object plus را is a strong clue that you need the transitive member.

If the subject changes, choose شدن

With شدن, the changing or affected participant becomes the subject. There is no separate causer argument in the basic clause. The sentence can leave the cause unknown, inferable, or irrelevant.

هوا بعد از غروب خیلی سرد شد.

havâ ba'd az ghorub kheyli sard shod.

The weather became very cold after sunset. (neutral)

گوشی‌ام ناگهان خاموش شد و دیگر روشن نشد.

gushi-am nâgahân khâmush shod va digar rowshan nashod.

My phone suddenly switched off and would not turn on again. (neutral)

شام پیش از رسیدن مهمان‌ها آماده شد.

shâm pish az residan-e mehmân-hâ âmâde shod.

Dinner was ready before the guests arrived. (neutral)

The last example can describe reaching a ready state without selecting who prepared the meal. Compare شام را آماده کردم “I prepared dinner,” where the speaker is the causer and شام is the object.

Minimal contrast: same result, different viewpoint

مریم پنجره را باز کرد.

Maryam panjare râ bâz kard.

Maryam opened the window. (active causer; کردن)

پنجره با فشار باد باز شد.

panjare bâ feshâr-e bâd bâz shod.

The window opened under the pressure of the wind. (change undergone; شدن)

Both clauses lead to an open window. The first assigns agency to Maryam; the second organizes the message around the window and its change. Persian does not need to pretend that the window “did” anything. شدن supplies the change-of-state perspective.

When شدن is passive-like

With nonverbal elements that name institutionally controlled acts—دعوت، انتخاب، منتشر، لغو، تأیید—the شدن member often corresponds to an English passive: دعوت شد “was invited,” انتخاب شد “was selected.” An intentional agent is conceptually present even when omitted.

گزارش نهایی دیروز منتشر شد.

gozâresh-e nehâyi diruz montasher shod.

The final report was published yesterday. (formal-neutral; passive-like)

سارا برای مرحله‌ی دوم مصاحبه دعوت شد.

Sârâ barâ-ye marhale-ye dovvom-e mosâhebe da'vat shod.

Sara was invited to the second interview stage. (formal-neutral)

This overlap explains why شدن cannot always be translated simply as “become.” The Passive with شدن page explains participles, agents, and tense. Here, choose the شدن member whenever the affected participant—not the doer—is the subject of the established pair.

Two contexts whose interpretation changes

جلسه لغو شد

Without an agent, جلسه لغو شد can be heard simply as a change in the schedule or as a passive event caused by organizers. Context resolves the emphasis.

به‌دلیل برف سنگین، جلسه‌ی عصر لغو شد.

be-dalil-e barf-e sangin, jalse-ye asr laghv shod.

Because of heavy snow, the afternoon meeting was canceled. (event-status reading)

If accountability matters, say مدیر جلسه را لغو کرد. The active کردن clause makes the decision-maker grammatically central.

چراغ خاموش شد

چراغ خاموش شد reports that the light went out; it does not tell us whether someone used the switch, a timer acted, or the electricity failed. نگهبان چراغ را خاموش کرد explicitly assigns the action to the guard.

چراغ راهرو خودبه‌خود خاموش شد؛ احتمالا تایمر دارد.

cherâgh-e râhrow khod-be-khod khâmush shod; ehtemâlan tâymer dârad.

The hallway light went off by itself; it probably has a timer. (neutral)

The pairing is lexical, not limitless

Many productive result expressions pair naturally, but others do not. صحبت کردن means “to speak”; ordinary Persian does not use صحبت شدن as its intransitive partner. تصمیم گرفتن means “to decide,” not تصمیم کردن in neutral current usage. Learn the nonverbal element and light verb together.

Both کردن and شدن occur across everyday, formal, and academic registers. Formality does not choose between them; participant structure does. Formal prose may favor passive-like شدن to foreground a process, while clear institutional writing often prefers active کردن when responsibility matters.

Common Mistakes

1. Keeping the causer as subject with شدن

❌ من اتاق را گرم شدم.

Incorrect — شدن makes the changing participant the subject; it cannot keep من as causer and اتاق را as object.

✅ من اتاق مهمان را پیش از خواب گرم کردم.

man otâq-e mehmân râ pish az khâb garm kardam.

I warmed the guest room before bedtime. (neutral)

2. Marking the changing subject with را

❌ هوا را سرد شد.

Incorrect — هوا is the subject of the change, not a direct object.

✅ هوا از دیشب سردتر شده است.

havâ az dishab sard-tar shode ast.

The weather has become colder since last night. (neutral)

3. Treating every شدن as spontaneous becoming

❌ علی دعوت شد یعنی علی کم‌کم دعوت بود.

Incorrect interpretation — دعوت شدن conventionally means ‘to be invited,’ with an implied intentional inviter.

✅ علی از طرف انجمن برای سخنرانی دعوت شد.

Ali az taraf-e anjoman barâ-ye sokhanrâni da'vat shod.

Ali was invited by the association to give a talk. (formal)

4. Swapping the light verb in a fixed predicate

❌ درباره‌ی مشکل صحبت شدم.

Incorrect for ‘I spoke about the problem’ — صحبت conventionally selects کردن.

✅ درباره‌ی مشکل با مدیر ساختمان صحبت کردم.

darbâre-ye moshkel bâ modir-e sâkhtemân sohbat kardam.

I spoke with the building manager about the problem. (neutral)

Key Takeaways

  • Subject causes an effect in a separate object: کردن.
  • Subject itself changes or is affected: شدن.
  • Specific affected object in a کردن clause: usually add را.
  • Institutional action viewed from the patient: a passive-like شدن predicate may be appropriate.
  • Agent must be explicit and central: prefer active کردن, or use the full passive construction when the patient must remain subject.
  • Pair not already familiar: verify it as a lexical predicate rather than swapping light verbs mechanically.
