For ordinary future plans, Persian often uses the present indicative: فردا میروم “I'm going tomorrow.” Use قرار است + subjunctive when you present the event as a plan, arrangement, or expectation: قرار است فردا بروم “I'm supposed/scheduled to go tomorrow.” Use inflected خواهـ + bare past stem mainly when formal prose, an announcement, prediction, or solemn commitment makes explicit futurity useful: فردا خواهم رفت “I will go tomorrow.”
These are not simply three levels of certainty or three distances into the future. They show how the speaker frames the event. A distant scheduled event can use the present; a near event can use خواهد in a formal bulletin. This page helps choose the frame without repeating the paradigms on Choosing the Future Construction.
The Decision Tree
- Is this an ordinary appointment, timetable, or settled personal action with future time clear from context? Use the present indicative.
- Is the point that an event is on a plan, program, agreement, or expectation? Use قرار است + present subjunctive.
- Is the sentence a formal forecast, announcement, policy statement, promise, or projected consequence? Consider خواهـ + bare past stem.
- Is the time expression missing? Add one if the present could otherwise be read as habitual or ongoing.
- Are several choices possible? Choose the one that matches the source of the future claim, not merely its date.
| Construction | Speaker's frame | Register |
|---|---|---|
| شنبه میروم | settled action, appointment, timetable | neutral across modern speech and writing |
| قرار است شنبه بروم | event belongs to a plan or expectation | neutral standard; قراره informal Tehran |
| شنبه خواهم رفت | future asserted explicitly | mainly formal, official, or literary |
Choose the Present for Settled Everyday Futures
The Persian present indicative covers nonpast time. A future adverb, a schedule, or shared planning context places it after now. This is the unmarked choice for appointments and everyday controlled actions, not an informal shortcut.
فردا ساعت ده دندانپزشک را میبینم.
fardâ sâ'at-e dah dandân-pezeshk râ mi-binam.
I'm seeing the dentist tomorrow at ten. (neutral; appointment)
قطار شبانه ساعت بیستودو حرکت میکند.
ghatâr-e shabâne sâ'at-e bist-o-do harekat mi-konad.
The night train leaves at 22:00. (formal-neutral; timetable)
تابستان آینده برای ادامهی تحصیل به شیراز میرویم.
tâbestân-e âyande barâ-ye edâme-ye tahsil be Shirâz mi-ravim.
Next summer we're going to Shiraz to continue our studies. (neutral; settled plan despite temporal distance)
The last example shows why “present means near future” is too simple. What matters is present anchoring: the trip is already treated as settled. Without فردا، ساعت ده، تابستان آینده, or an earlier question about future plans, میروم may instead be habitual. See Present Indicative for Future Time.
Choose قرار است for a Plan or Expectation
قرار است presents the future event as part of an arrangement, program, agreement, or reasonable expectation. The complement is normally in the present subjunctive. The construction can have a personal or inanimate subject and does not say who made the plan.
قرار است تعمیرکار عصر برای بررسی آسانسور بیاید.
gharâr ast ta'mirkâr asr barâ-ye barrasi-ye âsânsur biyâyad.
The repair technician is supposed to come this evening to inspect the elevator. (neutral; arrangement)
قرار است سامانهی تازه از ماه آینده فعال شود.
gharâr ast sâmâne-ye tâze az mâh-e âyande fa'âl shavad.
The new system is scheduled to become active next month. (formal-neutral; program)
طبق پیشبینی هواشناسی، قرار است فردا برف ببارد.
tebgh-e pish-bini-ye havâshenâsi, gharâr ast fardâ barf bebârad.
According to the weather forecast, it is expected to snow tomorrow. (formal-neutral; expectation rather than human plan)
The construction does not guarantee realization. قرار است بیاید states the current plan; the visitor may still cancel. In past form, قرار بود بیاید likewise does not by itself prove that the person failed to come.
In (informal, regional: Tehran) speech, قرار است commonly reduces to قراره, accompanied by colloquial complement forms.
قراره آخر هفته جواب نهایی رو بدن.
gharâre âkhar-e hafte javâb-e nehâyi ro bedan.
They're supposed to give the final answer at the weekend. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Choose خواهد for Explicit Formal Futurity
The synthetic future inflects خواهـ for the subject and places the main verb's bare past stem after it: خواهم رفت، اعلام خواهد کرد، منتشر خواهند شد. It is productive but less common for routine plans in present-day conversation. Formal announcements, analytical predictions, official commitments, and elevated prose are its strongest environments.
نتایج آزمون روز دوشنبه در سامانه منتشر خواهد شد.
natâyej-e âzmun ruz-e dushanbe dar sâmâne montasher khâhad shod.
The exam results will be published in the system on Monday. (formal announcement)
اگر بارندگی ادامه یابد، سطح رودخانه افزایش خواهد یافت.
agar bârandegi edâme yâbad, sath-e rudkhâne afzâyesh khâhad yâft.
If the rainfall continues, the river level will rise. (formal analytical prediction)
در این مسیر دشوار کنارتان خواهم ماند.
dar in masir-e doshvâr kenâr-etân khâham mând.
I will remain by your side on this difficult path. (formal or solemn promise)
In casual planning, فردا میآیم is normally more natural than فردا خواهم آمد. The latter is grammatical but can sound written, deliberate, or rhetorically emphatic. The morphology is treated on Future with خواستن.
A Three-Way Minimal Contrast
Imagine one trip to Tabriz:
شنبه به تبریز میروم؛ بلیتم را هم خریدهام.
shanbe be Tabriz mi-ravam; belit-am râ ham kharide-am.
I'm going to Tabriz on Saturday; I've bought my ticket too. (neutral; settled arrangement)
قرار است شنبه برای جلسه به تبریز بروم.
gharâr ast shanbe barâ-ye jalase be Tabriz beravam.
I'm supposed to go to Tabriz for a meeting on Saturday. (neutral; planned obligation/arrangement)
شنبه به تبریز خواهم رفت و گزارش را شخصا تحویل خواهم داد.
shanbe be Tabriz khâham raft va gozâresh râ shakhsan tahvil khâham dâd.
I will go to Tabriz on Saturday and deliver the report personally. (formal declaration)
The date and event remain constant. The present treats the booking as settled, قرار است foregrounds the plan governing the traveler, and خواهم turns the statement into an explicit formal commitment.
Two Ambiguous Contexts, Resolved Aloud
A weather forecast
فردا باران میبارد is a neutral forecast stated as an expected fact. قرار است فردا باران ببارد attributes the prediction to an expectation or forecast model. فردا باران خواهد بارید fits a formal forecast or literary projection. Temporal distance has not changed; source and register have.
فردا عصر باران میبارد، پس چتر بردار.
fardâ asr bârân mi-bârad, pas chatr bardâr.
It will rain tomorrow afternoon, so take an umbrella. (neutral conversation; forecast treated as settled)
A meeting time
If two colleagues already share the calendar, سهشنبه جلسه داریم is enough. If the schedule is provisional or being reported from an organizer, قرار است سهشنبه جلسه داشته باشیم highlights its planned status. An official notice may say جلسه روز سهشنبه برگزار خواهد شد.
بر اساس اطلاعیه، جلسهی عمومی سهشنبه برگزار خواهد شد.
bar asâs-e ettelâ'iyye, jalase-ye omumi se-shanbe bargozâr khâhad shod.
According to the notice, the general meeting will be held Tuesday. (formal announcement)
Temporal Distance and Certainty
Distance only creates tendencies. Near personal plans often use the present because they are concrete. Long-range forecasts often use خواهد because they appear in formal analysis. But ده سال دیگر بازنشسته میشوم can be a settled distant fact, and تا یک ساعت دیگر نتیجه اعلام خواهد شد can be a near formal announcement.
Certainty also fails as a simple three-step scale. A timetable present can be highly certain; قرار است openly leaves room for plan failure; a خواهد prediction may be cautious or confident depending on words such as احتمالا or قطعا. Construction expresses viewpoint; adverbs and context express degree of confidence.
Common Mistakes
1. Translating every English will with خواهد
❌ ساعت هشت خواهم میام دنبالت.
Incorrect — the future auxiliary cannot take finite میام as its complement.
✅ ساعت هشت میام دنبالت؛ جلوی در آماده باش.
sâ'at-e hasht miyâm donbâl-at; jelow-ye dar âmâde bâsh.
I'll pick you up at eight; be ready by the door. (informal, regional: Tehran)
2. Combining خواهد with an inflected present
❌ شرکت خواهد میکند نتیجه را اعلام.
Incorrect — the future uses inflected خواهـ followed by the main verb's bare past stem, with normal Persian word order.
✅ شرکت نتیجهی نهایی را فردا اعلام خواهد کرد.
sherkat natije-ye nehâyi râ fardâ e'lâm khâhad kard.
The company will announce the final result tomorrow. (formal)
3. Using the indicative after present قرار است
❌ قرار است مهمانها ساعت هفت میرسند.
Incorrect in neutral standard Persian — present قرار است selects a subjunctive complement.
✅ قرار است مهمانها حدود ساعت هفت برسند.
gharâr ast mehmân-hâ hodud-e sâ'at-e haft berasand.
The guests are expected to arrive around seven.
4. Treating قرار است as a guarantee
⚠️ چون قرار است پرواز ساعت نه برسد، امکان تأخیر ندارد.
chun qarâr ast parvâz sâ'at-e noh berasad, emkân-e ta'khir nadârad.
The sentence is grammatical, but the inference is false: قرار است reports the schedule, not guaranteed fulfillment.
✅ قرار است پرواز ساعت نه برسد، ولی ممکن است تأخیر داشته باشد.
gharâr ast parvâz sâ'at-e noh berasad, vali momken ast ta'khir dâshte bâshad.
The flight is scheduled to arrive at nine, but it may be delayed.
Key Takeaways
Final checklist:
- Everyday settled plan, appointment, or timetable? Present indicative.
- Plan, arrangement, program, or expectation as such? قرار است + subjunctive.
- Formal announcement, prediction, policy, or solemn promise? خواهـ + bare past stem.
- Present form potentially habitual? Add a future time anchor.
- Colloquial Tehran plan? قراره + colloquial subjunctive is natural.
- Near or distant? Let planning status and register decide; distance is secondary.
