Use the subjunctive when an expression presents the following event as required, desired, merely possible, or otherwise projected rather than asserted: باید بروم “I must go,” شاید بیاید “perhaps she will come,” میخواهم بماند “I want him to stay.” Use the indicative when the complement is offered as a fact, habit, observation, or confident prediction: میدانم که میآید “I know that she is coming.”
English usually puts a bare infinitive after a modal—“must go,” “may come”—and therefore hides the mood decision. Persian keeps a finite verb with person marking. The most useful question is not “Which word came before it?” but “Is the speaker asserting this event as part of reality, or locating it in necessity, desire, and possibility?”
The decision tree
- Does باید، لازم است، بهتر است، میخواهم، اجازه میدهم impose a desired or necessary event? Choose the present subjunctive.
- Does شاید، ممکن است، احتمال دارد present an open present/future possibility? The standard default is the subjunctive.
- Does میدانم، روشن است، معلوم است، حتما present the proposition as known or confidently asserted? Choose the indicative.
- Is the uncertain event already completed? Choose a perfect subjunctive such as آمده باشد, not an ordinary present form.
- Are both moods plausible after a belief expression such as فکر میکنم? Choose according to stance: indicative for a firmer prediction, subjunctive for a more tentative projection.
| Meaning | Typical trigger | Default following form | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| obligation/advice | باید، لازم است، بهتر است | present subjunctive | باید برویم |
| desire/control | میخواهم، ترجیح میدهم | present subjunctive | میخواهم بمانید |
| open possibility | شاید، ممکن است | present subjunctive | شاید برسد |
| known/asserted content | میدانم، معلوم است | indicative | میدانم میرسد |
| uncertain completed event | شاید، ممکن است | perfect subjunctive | شاید رسیده باشد |
Obligation and desire project an event
An obligation is not a report that the event is already happening. A desire likewise identifies a hoped-for outcome. Persian therefore uses a finite subjunctive whose ending identifies the performer.
باید تا فردا پاسخ مشتری را بدهیم.
bâyad tâ fardâ pâsokh-e moshtari râ bedahim.
We must answer the customer by tomorrow. (neutral)
بهتر است پیش از حرکت هوا را بررسی کنید.
behtar ast pish az harekat havâ râ barrasi konid.
It is better to check the weather before leaving. (neutral-formal advice)
میخواهم بچهها امشب زودتر بخوابند.
mi-khâham bachche-hâ emshab zud-tar bekhâband.
I want the children to go to sleep earlier tonight. (neutral)
Notice the different subjects in the last sentence: first-person میخواهم, third-plural بخوابند. Persian does not use an unmarked infinitive after “want”; the finite complement makes its embedded subject explicit through agreement. The actual subjunctive endings and stem changes belong on Present Subjunctive Formation.
Possibility normally selects the subjunctive
For an open present or future possibility, شاید and ممکن است commonly take the present subjunctive in careful Iranian Persian. Optional که may mark the clause boundary, especially after the longer predicate ممکن است, but که does not itself cause the mood.
شاید پرواز عصر بهدلیل مه دیر برسد.
shâyad parvâz-e asr be-dalil-e meh dir beresad.
The afternoon flight may arrive late because of fog. (neutral)
ممکن است که جلسه به هفتهی بعد موکول شود.
momken ast ke jalse be hafte-ye ba'd mowkul shavad.
The meeting may be postponed until next week. (formal-neutral)
احتمال دارد قیمت بلیت دوباره افزایش یابد.
ehtemâl dârad qeymat-e belit dobâre afzâyesh yâbad.
The ticket price may increase again. (formal)
In (informal, regional: Tehran) speech, one also hears indicative-looking forms after شاید, especially when the speaker is guessing about a current schedule or observable situation. Edited prose normally uses the subjunctive for a genuinely open possibility. This is a register and stance alternation, not evidence that mood is random.
Assertion and confidence favor the indicative
Knowledge predicates and evidential statements commit the speaker to the complement. A confident prediction likewise uses ordinary indicative aspect. The verb may describe the present, a habit, or a scheduled future.
میدانم که مدیر امروز در دفتر کار میکند.
mi-dânam ke modir emruz dar daftar kâr mi-konad.
I know that the manager is working at the office today. (neutral)
معلوم است که این دستگاه برق زیادی مصرف میکند.
ma'lum ast ke in dastgâh barq-e ziyâdi masraf mi-konad.
It is clear that this device consumes a lot of electricity. (formal-neutral)
حتما اتوبوس بعدی تا ده دقیقهی دیگر میرسد.
hatman otobus-e ba'di tâ dah daqiqe-ye digar mi-resad.
The next bus will surely arrive within ten minutes. (confident prediction; neutral)
The indicative does not make a future prediction logically certain. It packages it as the speaker's commitment. حتما strengthens that commitment; شاید explicitly withholds it.
Completed possibilities need a perfect form
If the uncertain event precedes the moment of assessment, Persian commonly uses the past participle plus subjunctive باشد. A present subjunctive would wrongly place the event as open or prospective.
شاید نامه را به نشانی قبلی فرستاده باشند.
shâyad nâme râ be neshâni-ye qabli ferestâde bâshand.
They may have sent the letter to the previous address. (neutral-formal)
This choice is about temporal viewpoint inside modality. The speaker is uncertain now about a completed sending. The Perfect Subjunctive page gives the full formation.
Minimal contrast: belief with two degrees of commitment
After فکر میکنم, both a confident indicative prediction and a more tentative subjunctive can occur. Intonation and context make the stance audible.
فکر میکنم نیما فردا برمیگردد؛ بلیتش را خریده است.
fekr mi-konam Nimâ fardâ bar-mi-gardad; belit-ash râ kharide ast.
I think Nima is coming back tomorrow; he has bought his ticket. (fairly confident prediction)
فکر میکنم نیما فردا برگردد، ولی هنوز مطمئن نیستم.
fekr mi-konam Nimâ fardâ bar-gardad, vali hanuz motma'en nistam.
I think Nima may come back tomorrow, but I'm not sure yet. (tentative)
This gray area is genuine. The governing expression does not behave like a switch that determines mood independently of meaning. A speaker can adjust commitment through mood, aspect, adverbs, and prosody together.
Two ambiguous contexts resolved
شاید نیاید
Negation inside the subjunctive means the possible event is nonarrival: شاید نیاید “perhaps she will not come.” It does not mean that possibility itself is denied.
شاید پزشک امروز به درمانگاه نیاید؛ برنامهاش هنوز قطعی نیست.
shâyad pezeshk emruz be darmângâh nayâyad; barnâme-ash hanuz qat'i nist.
The doctor may not come to the clinic today; the schedule is not final. (neutral)
نباید بروید
نباید بروید normally prohibits or strongly advises against going. “You do not need to go” instead removes necessity and uses لازم نیست بروید. English must not versus do not have to makes the same semantic distinction, but learners often collapse it in Persian.
لازم نیست امروز بیایید؛ جلسه لغو شده است.
lâzem nist emruz biyâyid; jalse laghv shode ast.
You do not need to come today; the meeting has been canceled. (neutral-formal)
Register and complementizer choice
شاید، باید، میخواهم are normal across speech and writing. احتمال دارد and impersonal لازم است are common in formal prose. Colloquial Tehran reductions such as ممکنه بیاد are natural in informal dialogue but should not leak into standard examples. Optional که makes a heavier clause boundary clearer; it never overrides the stance that licenses indicative or subjunctive.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying the indicative after باید
❌ باید فردا میرویم.
Incorrect for ordinary obligation — باید selects a projected action, not an asserted ongoing event.
✅ باید فردا صبح زود راه بیفتیم.
bâyad fardâ sobh zud râh bioftim.
We must set off early tomorrow morning. (neutral)
2. Using one person ending for different subjects
❌ میخواهم شما زود برسم.
Incorrect agreement — شما is the subject of the embedded event, so the second verb must be plural.
✅ میخواهم شما پیش از ظهر برسید.
mi-khâham shomâ pish az zohr beresid.
I want you to arrive before noon. (neutral)
3. Assuming که automatically requires the subjunctive
❌ میدانم که فردا بیاید.
Incorrect for asserted knowledge — که only marks the complement boundary.
✅ میدانم که او فردا با قطار میآید.
mi-dânam ke u fardâ bâ qatâr mi-âyad.
I know that she is coming by train tomorrow. (neutral)
4. Confusing prohibition with absence of necessity
⚠️ نباید فرم را پر کنید؛ اختیاری است.
nabâyad form râ por konid; ekhtiyâri ast.
Grammatical but internally contradictory — نباید پر کنید prohibits filling it in, whereas اختیاری است says it is optional.
✅ لازم نیست این بخش فرم را پر کنید؛ اختیاری است.
lâzem nist in bakhsh-e form râ por konid; ekhtiyâri ast.
You do not need to fill in this section of the form; it is optional. (formal-neutral)
Key Takeaways
- Required, desired, advised, or openly possible event: subjunctive.
- Known fact, habit, observation, or confident prediction: indicative.
- Uncertain event already completed: perfect subjunctive.
- Different subjects across the two verbs: mark each subject through its own personal ending.
- که marks a clause boundary; it does not choose mood.
- With belief predicates, use mood to express degree of commitment rather than memorizing one rigid trigger list.
