Predstaviti / predstavljati is a versatile verb that English splits into two words: "introduce" (a person) and "present / represent" (a plan, a show, a problem). All three senses share one stem and one aspect pair — perfective predstaviti, imperfective predstavljati — and the "introduce someone to someone" sense gives you a textbook accusative-person + dative-recipient frame, the same double-object pattern you meet with pokazati ("show"). The reflexive predstaviti se ("introduce oneself") is one of the most useful social phrases you can carry into any first meeting.
Aspect
| Verb | Aspect | Present 1sg | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| predstavljati | imperfective | predstavljam | representing/constituting (states); presenting repeatedly |
| predstaviti | perfective | predstavim | one act of introducing / presenting |
The perfective predstaviti is a single act — I introduced them, she presented the plan, done. The imperfective predstavljati covers repeated presenting, but also — crucially — the stative "represent / constitute" sense, which is inherently ongoing: To predstavlja problem ("That constitutes a problem"). This is a suffix-formed aspect pair: the imperfective adds the -(j)a- extension, which triggers the labial jotation v → vlj in the stem (predstav- → predstavlj-).
Present tense
Predstaviti is a regular i-class verb (predstavim); predstavljati is a regular a-class verb on the jotated stem (predstavljam).
| Person | predstaviti (pf) | predstavljati (impf) |
|---|---|---|
| ja | predstavim | predstavljam |
| ti | predstaviš | predstavljaš |
| on/ona/ono | predstavi | predstavlja |
| mi | predstavimo | predstavljamo |
| vi | predstavite | predstavljate |
| oni/one/ona | predstave | predstavljaju |
The perfective present predstavim is not a "now" tense; it reads as future or condition. The "represent/constitute" sense, being stative, always uses the imperfective present: Ovo predstavlja prekretnicu ("This represents a turning point").
Ova odluka predstavlja velik korak za tvrtku.
This decision represents a big step for the company. — stative 'represent', imperfective.
Čim te predstavim šefu, sve će biti lakše.
As soon as I introduce you to the boss, everything will be easier. — perfective present, future reading + dative 'šefu'.
The l-participle
Predstaviti is regular -iti: predstavio / predstavila. Predstavljati: predstavljao / predstavljala.
| Gender / number | predstaviti | predstavljati |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | predstavio | predstavljao |
| feminine singular | predstavila | predstavljala |
| neuter singular | predstavilo | predstavljalo |
| masculine plural | predstavili | predstavljali |
| feminine plural | predstavile | predstavljale |
| neuter plural | predstavila | predstavljala |
Perfect tense (perfekt)
Clitic biti + l-participle. The everyday "I introduced / presented" is the perfective predstavio sam / predstavila sam.
| Person | Masculine subject | Feminine subject |
|---|---|---|
| ja | predstavio sam | predstavila sam |
| ti | predstavio si | predstavila si |
| on / ona | predstavio je | predstavila je |
| mi | predstavili smo | predstavile smo |
| vi | predstavili ste | predstavile ste |
| oni / one | predstavili su | predstavile su |
Predstavila je novi plan upravi na sastanku.
She presented the new plan to the board at the meeting. — perfective + dative 'upravi'.
Na sajmu su predstavljali najnoviji model.
At the fair they were presenting the latest model. — imperfective, ongoing presentation.
Future I (futur prvi)
Both drop the final -i: predstavit ću, predstavljat ću.
| Person | predstaviti | predstavljati |
|---|---|---|
| ja | predstavit ću | predstavljat ću |
| ti | predstavit ćeš | predstavljat ćeš |
| on/ona/ono | predstavit će | predstavljat će |
| mi | predstavit ćemo | predstavljat ćemo |
| vi | predstavit ćete | predstavljat ćete |
| oni/one/ona | predstavit će | predstavljat će |
Predstavit ću ti svoje kolege na zabavi.
I'll introduce my colleagues to you at the party. — future + accusative 'kolege' (the people introduced) + dative clitic 'ti' (the recipient).
Imperative
The perfective Predstavi! ("Introduce / present [it]!") is the everyday request. The imperfective predstavljaj! is rarer and implies a repeated or sustained presenting.
| Person | predstaviti (pf) | predstavljati (impf) |
|---|---|---|
| ti | predstavi | predstavljaj |
| mi | predstavimo | predstavljajmo |
| vi | predstavite | predstavljajte |
Predstavi me svom prijatelju, baš ga želim upoznati.
Introduce me to your friend, I really want to meet him. — perfective imperative + accusative 'me' + dative 'prijatelju'.
Conditional I (kondicional prvi)
bih-clitics + l-participle, for polite offers and softened statements.
| Person | predstaviti (masc.) |
|---|---|
| ja | predstavio bih |
| ti | predstavio bi |
| on/ona/ono | predstavio/predstavila/predstavilo bi |
| mi | predstavili bismo |
| vi | predstavili biste |
| oni/one/ona | predstavili bi |
Rado bih vam predstavio našeg novog kolegu.
I'd be glad to introduce our new colleague to you. — conditional, formal + dative 'vam'.
Other forms
- Passive participle: predstavljen, predstavljena, predstavljeno ("presented, introduced"). Note the labial jotation v → vlj: the stem predstav- softens to predstavlj- before -en, giving predstavljen, not *predstavjen or *predstaven. Common in reports: Projekt je predstavljen javnosti ("The project was presented to the public"). The imperfective gives predstavljan.
- Verbal adverb: imperfective predstavljajući ("[while] presenting / representing"). The perfective has no present adverb.
Nova strategija predstavljena je dioničarima u ponedjeljak.
The new strategy was presented to the shareholders on Monday. — passive participle 'predstavljena' (formal).
Key uses and government
1. Introduce a person: accusative + dative
The signature frame. You introduce someone (accusative — the person being introduced) to someone (dative — the person receiving the introduction): predstaviti nekoga nekomu. This double-object pattern, an accusative person plus a dative recipient with no preposition, is the same shape as pokazati ("show someone something"). See the accusative direct object and the dative of the indirect object.
Predstavila me svojim roditeljima.
She introduced me to her parents. — accusative 'me' + dative 'roditeljima'.
Dopustite da vam predstavim gospodina Horvata.
Allow me to introduce Mr Horvat to you. — accusative 'gospodina Horvata' + dative 'vam', formal.
2. Present something (a plan, a show, a product): accusative (+ dative audience)
In the "present / unveil" sense, the thing presented is the accusative object, and the audience — if named — goes in the dative.
Redatelj je predstavio film publici prije premijere.
The director presented the film to the audience before the premiere. — accusative 'film' + dative 'publici'.
3. Represent / constitute: imperfective + accusative
The stative sense "to represent, constitute, amount to" is always imperfective (predstavljati) and takes a plain accusative complement. To predstavlja problem = "That represents/constitutes a problem". This sense is common in formal and academic writing.
Kašnjenje predstavlja ozbiljan rizik za projekt.
The delay represents a serious risk to the project. — stative 'predstavljati' + accusative (academic register).
4. predstaviti se — "introduce oneself"
The reflexive predstaviti se is how you introduce yourself. With kao + nominative it adds the role you present yourself as: predstavila se kao novinarka ("she introduced herself as a journalist"). This is the reflexive se.
Predstavio se kao novi direktor odjela.
He introduced himself as the new head of department. — reflexive + 'kao' + nominative.
Predstavi se, nismo se još upoznali.
Introduce yourself, we haven't met yet. — reflexive imperative.
Common Mistakes
❌ Predstavila me svoje roditelje.
Wrong case for the recipient — the person you're introduced to is dative: 'svojim roditeljima', not accusative.
✅ Predstavila me svojim roditeljima.
She introduced me to her parents.
❌ To predstavim problem.
The 'represent/constitute' sense is stative, hence imperfective: 'predstavlja', not the perfective present.
✅ To predstavlja problem.
That represents a problem.
❌ Stalno predstavim nove ideje na sastancima.
Repeated action needs the imperfective: 'predstavljam'. The perfective can't mean 'habitually'.
✅ Stalno predstavljam nove ideje na sastancima.
I'm always presenting new ideas at meetings.
❌ Projekt je predstaven javnosti.
Missing jotation — the passive participle is 'predstavljen' (v → vlj), not '*predstaven'.
✅ Projekt je predstavljen javnosti.
The project was presented to the public.
❌ Predstaviti ću ti kolege.
Wrong future spelling — the infinitive drops its -i before the clitic: 'predstavit ću'.
✅ Predstavit ću ti kolege.
I'll introduce my colleagues to you.
