Two-syllable verbs carry the same softening meaning as one-syllable ones — "do a bit of / take a little…" — but they wear a different shape. A disyllabic verb AB reduplicates by copying the whole word: ABAB. 休息 (xiūxi, "rest") becomes 休息休息 (xiūxi xiūxi, "take a little rest"); 研究 (yánjiū, "research") becomes 研究研究 (yánjiū yánjiū, "look into it a bit"); 商量 (shāngliang, "discuss") becomes 商量商量 (shāngliang shāngliang, "talk it over"). Two rules matter and both are easy to break: the pattern is ABAB, not AABB, and no 一 is ever inserted.
Copy the whole word: ABAB
The mental model is simple. A one-syllable verb copies its one syllable (看 → 看看); a two-syllable verb copies its two syllables as a block (研究 → 研究研究). You are duplicating the word, not the syllables inside it. This keeps the verb readable as a single action-unit while adding the "just a bit" flavour.
| Verb | Reduplicated (ABAB) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 休息 (xiūxi) | 休息休息 (xiūxi xiūxi) | take a little rest |
| 研究 (yánjiū) | 研究研究 (yánjiū yánjiū) | look into it a bit |
| 商量 (shāngliang) | 商量商量 (shāngliang shāngliang) | talk it over |
| 讨论 (tǎolùn) | 讨论讨论 (tǎolùn tǎolùn) | discuss a bit |
| 学习 (xuéxí) | 学习学习 (xuéxí xuéxí) | study / learn a bit |
| 考虑 (kǎolǜ) | 考虑考虑 (kǎolǜ kǎolǜ) | give it some thought |
| 收拾 (shōushi) | 收拾收拾 (shōushi shōushi) | tidy up a bit |
| 介绍 (jièshào) | 介绍介绍 (jièshào jièshào) | introduce briefly |
你先休息休息,别累坏了身体。
nǐ xiān xiūxi xiūxi, bié lèi huài le shēntǐ
Rest up a bit first — don't wear yourself out. (informal)
这件事我们得好好研究研究。
zhè jiàn shì wǒmen děi hǎohǎo yánjiū yánjiū
We need to look into this matter properly. (informal / semi-formal)
别急着签,咱们回去商量商量。
bié jízhe qiān, zánmen huíqù shāngliang shāngliang
Don't rush to sign — let's go back and talk it over. (informal)
你给大家介绍介绍你自己吧。
nǐ gěi dàjiā jièshào jièshào nǐ zìjǐ ba
Why don't you introduce yourself to everyone a bit. (informal)
Why 学习学习 works but *学学习习 doesn't
The strongest instinct to fight is the pull toward AABB — copying each syllable separately. That produces gibberish for verbs (休休息息, 学学习习) because AABB is reserved for adjectives, where it does a completely different job. When an adjective reduplicates, each half intensifies a vivid, spread-out quality: 干净 (clean) → 干干净净 (spick and span), 高兴 (happy) → 高高兴兴 (all cheerful and bright). That is description — painting a quality more vividly.
Verb reduplication does the opposite: it reduces the action to a small dose. Because the verb names one indivisible action, it copies as one indivisible block (ABAB). Splitting it into AABB would shatter the action into meaningless syllable-halves. Different job, different shape — see adjective AABB reduplication for the other side.
| Word class | Pattern | Example | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verb | ABAB | 讨论讨论 (tǎolùn tǎolùn) | discuss a bit (reduce) |
| Adjective | AABB | 干干净净 (gāngān jìngjìng) | spick and span (intensify) |
这个方案还要再考虑考虑。
zhège fāng'àn hái yào zài kǎolǜ kǎolǜ
This plan still needs a bit more thought. (semi-formal) — verb, so ABAB.
她把房间收拾得干干净净。
tā bǎ fángjiān shōushi de gāngān jìngjìng
She tidied the room spick and span. (informal) — 干净 is an adjective, so AABB.
Separable verbs: double only the verb part
A trap hides inside a special class of two-syllable "verbs." Separable verbs (离合词) are secretly verb + object — 见面 is literally "meet face," 帮忙 is "help busy-ness," 散步 is "scatter steps." Because their second half is really an object, they do not reduplicate as ABAB. Instead the verb part alone doubles, exactly like a one-syllable verb, and the object stays put: 见面 → 见见面, 帮忙 → 帮帮忙, 散步 → 散散步. See separable verbs for the full class.
有空我们见见面,好久没聊了。
yǒu kòng wǒmen jiàn jian miàn, hǎojiǔ méi liáo le
Let's meet up when we're free — we haven't talked in ages. (informal) — 见面 → 见见面.
你能不能帮帮忙,我一个人搬不动。
nǐ néng bu néng bāng bang máng, wǒ yí ge rén bān bu dòng
Could you give me a hand? I can't move it alone. (informal) — 帮忙 → 帮帮忙.
吃完饭出去散散步吧。
chī wán fàn chūqù sàn san bù ba
Let's go for a little walk after dinner. (informal) — 散步 → 散散步.
Common Mistakes
1. Using AABB on a real verb. Verbs copy the whole word (ABAB). AABB belongs to adjectives.
❌ 你休休息息吧。
Incorrect — verbs reduplicate as ABAB; AABB is for adjectives.
✅ 你休息休息吧。
nǐ xiūxi xiūxi ba
Take a little rest. — 休息休息, whole word doubled.
2. Inserting 一. The 一 of V一V is one-syllable-verb only; two-syllable verbs never take it.
❌ 我们研究一研究这个问题。
Incorrect — no 一 in disyllabic reduplication.
✅ 我们研究研究这个问题。
wǒmen yánjiū yánjiū zhège wèntí
Let's look into this problem a bit. — clean ABAB.
3. Treating a separable verb as ABAB. 见面 is verb + object, so only 见 doubles.
❌ 我们见面见面吧。
Incorrect — 见面 is separable; only the verb part doubles: 见见面.
✅ 我们见见面吧。
wǒmen jiàn jian miàn ba
Let's meet up. — verb part doubled, object 面 stays.
4. Reduplicating an adjective as ABAB. For a vivid quality you want AABB, not the verb's ABAB.
❌ 房间收拾得漂亮漂亮的。
Incorrect — for the adjective 漂亮 use AABB: 漂漂亮亮.
✅ 房间收拾得漂漂亮亮的。
fángjiān shōushi de piàopiao liàngliàng de
The room is tidied up all nice and pretty. — adjective AABB.
Key Takeaways
- A two-syllable verb reduplicates whole, as ABAB: 休息休息, 研究研究, 商量商量.
- The pattern is never AABB (that shape intensifies adjectives) and never takes 一.
- The softening meaning is identical to one-syllable reduplication — "do a bit of" — only the shape differs.
- Separable verbs (见面, 帮忙, 散步) double only their verb part: 见见面, 帮帮忙, 散散步.
- Quick test: if you can already split the verb (见了面), it's separable — so reduplicate the first syllable, not the block.

- Verb Reduplication: The Tentative/Brief SenseHSK 2 — Doubling a verb — 看看 (kànkan), 试试 (shìshi), 尝尝 (chángchang) — softens it to 'have a quick look / give it a try / do a bit of'. It's a built-in politeness device, not a repeated action, and the second syllable drops to neutral tone.
- One-Syllable Reduplication (看看 / 看一看)HSK 2 — A one-syllable verb doubles as VV or, with 一 spelled out between, as V一V — 看看 = 看一看 (kàn yi kàn), 想想 = 想一想, 试试 = 试一试. Same softening meaning; 一 just makes it a touch fuller. The second syllable is neutral tone.
- How Separable Verbs Split (见了一次面)HSK 3 — When you add aspect, duration, frequency, or a modifier to a 离合词, it slots INSIDE: 见了一次面 (met once), 睡了一个好觉 (had a good sleep), 结过婚 (has been married), 帮了我一个忙 (did me a favor). The 了/过 sticks to the verb half, never the whole word.
- Disyllabic Reduplication (AABB: 高高兴兴, 干干净净)HSK 3 — A two-syllable adjective doubles as AABB — 干净 → 干干净净 'spotless', 高兴 → 高高兴兴 'all cheerful' — for a vivid, fully-saturated feel, taking 地 before a verb and 的 as a description, and never 很.
