Chinese doubles one-syllable adjectives as AA (慢 → 慢慢), and it doubles two-syllable adjectives as AABB. Take 干净 (gānjìng, "clean") and you get 干干净净 (gāngānjìngjìng, "spotless, spick and span"); take 高兴 (gāoxìng, "happy") and you get 高高兴兴 (gāogāoxìngxìng, "all cheerful, in high spirits"). The pattern is first syllable twice, then second syllable twice — A-A-B-B, never A-B-A-B. The effect is the same warmth the AA form carries, scaled up to a fuller word: the quality becomes vivid, thorough, fully saturated, and emotionally coloured. This is one of the features that separates lively native description from flat textbook Chinese. For the one-syllable pattern, see monosyllabic AA reduplication.
What AABB does: fully saturated, not just "clean"
Plain 干净 states a fact — "it's clean." 干干净净 paints it — "spotless, not a speck anywhere, thoroughly clean." The doubling adds a felt, wholehearted, often affectionate colour, and it typically describes a completed, thorough state or the manner in which something is done.
| Base adjective | AABB form | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| 干净 (gānjìng) | 干干净净 (gāngānjìngjìng) | spotless, spick and span |
| 高兴 (gāoxìng) | 高高兴兴 (gāogāoxìngxìng) | all cheerful, in high spirits |
| 漂亮 (piàoliang) | 漂漂亮亮 (piàopiàoliàngliàng) | all dressed up, prettily |
| 认真 (rènzhēn) | 认认真真 (rènrènzhēnzhēn) | conscientiously, in earnest |
| 舒服 (shūfu) | 舒舒服服 (shūshūfúfú) | nice and comfy |
| 清楚 (qīngchu) | 清清楚楚 (qīngqīngchǔchǔ) | crystal clear |
| 整齐 (zhěngqí) | 整整齐齐 (zhěngzhěngqíqí) | all neat and tidy |
| 快乐 (kuàilè) | 快快乐乐 (kuàikuàilèlè) | happily, merrily |

Where AABB sits: 地 before a verb, 的 as a description
Like AA, an AABB adjective plays two roles, each with its own linking particle:
- Adverbial (before a verb), linked with 地 (de): it describes the manner of the action — 高高兴兴地回家 (go home cheerfully), 认认真真地工作 (work conscientiously). See adjectives as adverbs with 地.
- Attributive / predicate (describing a noun or a resultant state), linked with 的 (de): 干干净净的房间 (a spotless room), 桌子擦得干干净净的 (the desk is wiped spotless).
他认认真真地把每道题都检查了一遍。
tā rènrènzhēnzhēn de bǎ měi dào tí dōu jiǎnchá le yí biàn
He carefully checked every single problem once over. (manner, + 地)

书架上的书排得整整齐齐的。
shūjià shàng de shū pái de zhěngzhěngqíqí de

wǒ xǐhuan yì jiān gāngānjìngjìng de chúfáng
I like a nice clean kitchen. (attributive, + 的)
The tone note: a neutral second syllable comes back to life
Here is the detail that makes AABB sound right rather than robotic. Many two-syllable adjectives have a neutral-tone second syllable in their base form — 漂亮 is piàoliang, 舒服 is shūfu, 清楚 is qīngchu. When they reduplicate, that neutral syllable recovers its full citation tone:
| Base (neutral 2nd) | AABB (tone restored) |
|---|---|
| 漂亮 (piào·liang) | 漂漂亮亮 (piàopiào·liàng·liàng) — 4th tone returns |
| 舒服 (shū·fu) | 舒舒服服 (shūshū·fú·fú) — 2nd tone returns |
| 清楚 (qīng·chu) | 清清楚楚 (qīngqīng·chǔ·chǔ) — 3rd tone returns |
Base adjectives whose second syllable already carries a full tone (干净 gānjìng, 认真 rènzhēn) simply keep it. Beyond that, colloquial northern speech may push the second syllable toward 1st tone and add an 儿 to the end (漂漂亮亮儿) — (regional: northern, colloquial) — but standard Mandarin is perfectly happy without it.
她今天打扮得漂漂亮亮的,要去参加婚礼。
tā jīntiān dǎban de piàopiàoliàngliàng de, yào qù cānjiā hūnlǐ
She's all dressed up pretty today — she's going to a wedding.
祝你们全家快快乐乐、平平安安。
zhù nǐmen quánjiā kuàikuàilèlè, píngpíng'ān'ān
Wishing your whole family happiness and safety. (AABB in blessings)
AABB (adjectives) vs ABAB (verbs) — don't cross the wires
The single classic error is reduplicating a two-syllable adjective on the verb pattern. Keep the two apart:
- A two-syllable adjective doubles AABB: 干净 → 干干净净, 高兴 → 高高兴兴.
- A two-syllable verb doubles ABAB: 讨论 → 讨论讨论 ("discuss a bit"), 休息 → 休息休息 ("take a little rest").
So 干净 becomes 干干净净 and never 干净干净; the verb 讨论 becomes 讨论讨论 and never 讨讨论论. And note that not every two-syllable adjective reduplicates naturally — abstract or bookish ones like 重要 (important) or 优秀 (excellent) resist it; reach for AABB with the concrete, everyday, sensory adjectives where it feels alive.
桌子擦得干干净净,地也拖过了。
zhuōzi cā de gāngānjìngjìng, dì yě tuō guo le
The table's wiped spotless and the floor's been mopped too.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding a degree adverb. AABB already means "vividly / thoroughly," so 很/非常 can't co-occur.
❌ 房间很干干净净。
Incorrect — reduplication already intensifies; say 房间干干净净的 or use plain 房间很干净.
✅ 房间干干净净的。
fángjiān gāngānjìngjìng de
The room is spotless.
2. Reduplicating an adjective ABAB (the verb pattern). Two-syllable adjectives go AABB, not ABAB.
❌ 她打扮得漂亮漂亮的。
Incorrect — the adjective 漂亮 doubles AABB: 漂漂亮亮.
✅ 她打扮得漂漂亮亮的。
tā dǎban de piàopiàoliàngliàng de
She's all dressed up pretty.
3. Using 的 for an adverbial AABB. Before a verb, the manner marker is 地, not 的.
❌ 大家高高兴兴的过节。
Nonstandard — before a verb use adverbial 地: 高高兴兴地过节.
✅ 大家高高兴兴地过节。
dàjiā gāogāoxìngxìng de guòjié
Everyone celebrates the holiday cheerfully.
Key Takeaways
- Two-syllable adjectives reduplicate AABB — first syllable twice, then second twice: 干净 → 干干净净, 高兴 → 高高兴兴.
- The feel is vivid, thorough, fully saturated, and warm — a completed state or the manner of an action.
- Use 地 before a verb (高高兴兴地回家) and 的 for a description (干干净净的房间).
- A neutral second syllable recovers its full tone on reduplication: 漂亮 → 漂漂亮亮 (piàopiàoliàngliàng).
- AABB carries built-in intensity, so never add 很/非常; and don't confuse it with the verb pattern ABAB (讨论讨论).
