Chinese loves to double words, and adjectives are no exception. Take a one-syllable adjective and say it twice — 慢 (màn, "slow") becomes 慢慢 (mànmàn, "slowly, unhurriedly"), 好 (hǎo, "good") becomes 好好 (hǎohǎo, "properly, thoroughly") — and you don't get "slow slow." You get a vivid, softened, lived-in version of the quality. Reduplication is one of the warmest, most native-sounding features of the language: it colours descriptions, gentles instructions, and fills children's speech and affectionate talk. This page covers the one-syllable AA pattern; the two-syllable AABB pattern (干干净净) gets its own page.
What AA does: vivid, not just "more"
Reduplicating adds a pictorial, felt quality. 高 states a fact ("tall"); 高高的 paints it ("nice and tall," vividly tall). The doubling also carries a softening, patient tone — which is why 慢慢 ("take your time") sounds kind, not just "slow."
| Base | AA form | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| 慢 (màn) | 慢慢 (mànmàn) | slowly, unhurriedly |
| 好 (hǎo) | 好好 (hǎohǎo) | properly, thoroughly |
| 高 (gāo) | 高高的 (gāogāo de) | nice and tall |
| 红 (hóng) | 红红的 (hónghóng de) | a vivid red |
| 圆 (yuán) | 圆圆的 (yuányuán de) | nice and round |
你慢慢说,别着急,我们有的是时间。
nǐ mànmàn shuō, bié zháojí, wǒmen yǒudeshì shíjiān
Take your time and speak slowly — don't rush, we've got all the time in the world.
这个周末我要好好休息一下。
zhège zhōumò wǒ yào hǎohǎo xiūxi yíxià
This weekend I'm going to rest up properly.
天上挂着一轮圆圆的月亮。
tiānshàng guà zhe yì lún yuányuán de yuèliang
A nice round moon hangs in the sky. (vivid attributive)
Where AA sits: 地 for verbs, 的 for nouns
An AA adjective usually plays one of two roles, each with its own linking particle:
- Adverbial (before a verb), linked with 地 (de): 慢慢地走 (walk slowly), 好好地想想 (think it over carefully). This is the most common use — see adjective-as-adverb 地.
- Attributive / predicate (describing a noun), linked with 的 (de): 高高的个子 (a tall build), 她的脸红红的 (her face is all flushed).
他慢慢地站起来,走到窗前。
tā mànmàn de zhàn qǐlái, zǒu dào chuāng qián
He slowly stood up and walked over to the window. (adverbial, + 地)
你先好好地想想,别急着回答。
nǐ xiān hǎohǎo de xiǎngxiang, bié jízhe huídá
Think it over carefully first — don't rush to answer.
这些苹果红红的,看着就想吃。
zhèxiē píngguǒ hónghóng de, kànzhe jiù xiǎng chī
These apples are a lovely red — they make you want to eat them just looking. (predicate, + 的)
一个胖胖的小孩坐在门口玩儿。
yí gè pàngpàng de xiǎohái zuò zài ménkǒu wánr
A chubby little kid is sitting at the door playing. (attributive, + 的)
The tone change and the Beijing 儿
In colloquial northern speech the second syllable of an AA adjective often jumps to the first tone and picks up an 儿 (erhua): 好好儿 → hǎohāor, 慢慢儿 → mànmānr, 满满儿 → mǎnmānr. This is optional and regional; standard Mandarin is perfectly happy with the plain 好好 (hǎohǎo) / 慢慢 (mànmàn). Don't feel you must add it, but do recognize it.
你好好儿想想,这件事到底该怎么办。
nǐ hǎohāor xiǎngxiang, zhè jiàn shì dàodǐ gāi zěnme bàn
Have a good, careful think about what on earth we should do. (northern colloquial: 好好儿 hǎohāor)
AA (adjectives) vs ABAB (verbs) — don't cross the wires
Reduplication patterns differ by part of speech, and mixing them up is a classic error:
- A one-syllable adjective doubles AA: 慢 → 慢慢.
- A two-syllable adjective doubles AABB: 干净 → 干干净净 (see the AABB page).
- A two-syllable verb, by contrast, doubles ABAB: 讨论 → 讨论讨论 ("discuss a bit"), 休息 → 休息休息.
So 干净 the adjective becomes 干干净净, but you would never say 干净干净; and the verb 讨论 becomes 讨论讨论, never 讨讨论论. The verb reduplication overview lays out the ABAB side, where doubling instead signals a brief, tentative action.
时间还早,我们慢慢走过去吧。
shíjiān hái zǎo, wǒmen mànmàn zǒu guòqù ba
There's still plenty of time — let's just stroll over. (慢慢, one-syllable AA)
Common Mistakes
1. Adding a degree adverb to a reduplicated adjective. The doubling already carries the intensity, so 很/非常 can't co-occur.
❌ 他很慢慢地走。
Incorrect — reduplication already intensifies; drop the 很.
✅ 他慢慢地走。
tā mànmàn de zǒu
He walks slowly / unhurriedly.
2. Reduplicating a two-syllable adjective as ABAB. Adjectives go AABB; ABAB is the verb pattern.
❌ 把桌子擦得干净干净。
Incorrect — the adjective 干净 doubles AABB, not ABAB.
✅ 把桌子擦得干干净净。
bǎ zhuōzi cā de gāngānjìngjìng
Wipe the table nice and clean.
3. Using 的 for an adverbial AA. Before a verb, the adverbial marker is 地, not 的.
❌ 请你慢慢的说。
Nonstandard — before a verb use adverbial 地: 慢慢地说.
✅ 请你慢慢地说。
qǐng nǐ mànmàn de shuō
Please speak slowly.
4. Parking the AA form after the verb. An adverbial AA goes before the verb; for "a bit slower" after the verb you'd switch to the complement 慢一点儿.
❌ 你说慢慢。
Incorrect — the adverbial 慢慢 precedes the verb (慢慢说).
✅ 你慢慢说。
nǐ mànmàn shuō
Speak slowly. (or 你说慢一点儿 for 'a bit slower')
Key Takeaways
- A one-syllable adjective doubles A→AA for a vivid, softened, thorough feel: 慢慢、好好、高高的、红红的.
- AA is adverbial with 地 (慢慢地走) or attributive/predicate with 的 (高高的、红红的).
- Colloquial northern speech shifts the second syllable to 1st tone + 儿: 好好儿 (hǎohāor), 慢慢儿 (mànmānr) — optional, regional.
- Reduplication carries its own intensity, so never add 很/非常 (*很慢慢).
- Adjectives reduplicate AABB (干干净净), not the verb pattern ABAB (讨论讨论) — keep the two straight.

- Adjectives as Manner Adverbs (地)HSK 3 — Add 地 (de) to an adjective to turn it into a manner adverb before the verb — 认真地学习 (study hard), 高兴地说 (say happily), 慢慢地走 (walk slowly) — the Chinese equivalent of the English '-ly' slot.
