One of the most distinctive habits of spoken Chinese is doubling a verb — 看看 (kànkan, "have a look"), 试试 (shìshi, "give it a try"), 尝尝 (chángchang, "have a taste"). To an English speaker this looks like repetition, as if 看看 meant "look look." It does not. Reduplication is a softening device: it shrinks the action down to a small, casual, tentative dose — "just take a quick look," "give it a go," "do a bit of." Because a small, low-pressure request is easy to say yes to, reduplication is also the everyday tool for making suggestions and requests sound polite and friendly. This page frames the whole subgroup; the one-syllable and two-syllable patterns, the completed-action form 看了看, and the near-synonym 看一下 each get their own page.
What reduplication actually means
Chinese verbs never change shape for tense, person, or number — so to modulate how much of an action is on the table, the language reaches for reduplication. Doubling the verb reduces its "weight": instead of the full, committed action, you get a light, brief, exploratory version of it. Linguists call this the delimitative aspect (a self-limited, short burst of action). The practical translations are all diminutives: "a little," "for a moment," "have a quick…," "give it a try."
你看看这个,很有意思。
nǐ kànkan zhège, hěn yǒu yìsi
Have a look at this — it's really interesting. (informal) — 看看, not a doubled 'look'.
让我想想,别催我。
ràng wǒ xiǎngxiang, bié cuī wǒ
Let me think it over — don't rush me. (informal) — 想想 = have a think.
你尝尝我做的红烧肉。
nǐ chángchang wǒ zuò de hóngshāoròu
Have a taste of the braised pork I made. (informal) — a warm, inviting 尝尝.
Why it doubles as politeness
Compare a bare imperative with its reduplicated version. 看! (Kàn!) is "Look!" — a bark. 你看看 (nǐ kànkan) is "Have a look" — an invitation. Because reduplication frames the action as brief and undemanding, it lowers the social cost of the request. This is why it saturates suggestions, offers, and requests, especially in the imperative.
你先歇会儿,我们等等你。
nǐ xiān xiē huìr, wǒmen děngdeng nǐ
Take a break first — we'll wait for you. (informal) — 等等 softens 'wait'.
这件事咱们商量商量吧。
zhè jiàn shì zánmen shāngliang shāngliang ba
Let's talk this over a bit. (informal) — the two-syllable 商量 doubles as ABAB.
有空来我家坐坐。
yǒu kòng lái wǒ jiā zuòzuo
Come sit a while at my place when you're free. (informal) — a friendly, low-key invitation.
您先看看菜单,我一会儿再来点单。
nín xiān kànkan càidān, wǒ yíhuìr zài lái diǎndān
Please look over the menu first; I'll come back to take your order. (formal, service) — polite 您 + softening 看看.
The shapes at a glance
The softening idea is constant; only the shape changes with the verb. Here is the map of the whole subgroup:
| Pattern | Example | Sense | Page |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-syllable V → VV | 看看 (kànkan) | have a look | monosyllabic |
| One-syllable V → V一V | 看一看 (kàn yi kàn) | have a look (fuller) | monosyllabic |
| Two-syllable V → ABAB | 休息休息 (xiūxi xiūxi) | take a little rest | disyllabic |
| Completed brief V了V | 看了看 (kàn le kàn) | glanced | V了V |
| Near-synonym V + 一下 | 看一下 (kàn yíxià) | have a quick look | 看看 vs 看一下 |
Two things stay true across all of them. First, the added syllable is neutral (toneless): 看看 is kànkan, not kànkàn — the second 看 is unstressed and light. Second, reduplication only works on volitional, controllable actions — things you can choose to do a little of. Verbs of state resist it, which is the trap in the next section.
我去问问价钱。
wǒ qù wènwen jiàqian
I'll go ask about the price. (informal) — 问问, second syllable neutral.
你听听他怎么说,别急着下结论。
nǐ tīngting tā zěnme shuō, bié jízhe xià jiélùn
Listen a bit to what he says — don't rush to a conclusion. (informal)
Common Mistakes
1. Reading 看看 as a doubled action. The doubling softens; it does not repeat. 看看 is "have a look," never "look look" — and piling on extra copies does not mean "many times."
❌ 我看看看看这本书。
Incorrect — extra copies don't mean 'look many times'; 看看 already means 'have a brief look'. For 'many times' use 看很多次.
✅ 你看看这本书。
nǐ kànkan zhè běn shū
Have a look at this book. — one doubling, meaning 'a brief look'.
2. Reduplicating a stative verb. Verbs of state — 是 (be), 知道 (know), 有 (have) — describe conditions, not doses of action, so they can't reduplicate.
❌ 我知道知道这件事。
Incorrect — 知道 is a state; it can't be reduplicated.
✅ 我了解一下这件事。
wǒ liǎojiě yíxià zhè jiàn shì
Let me look into this a bit. — use an action verb (or 一下) instead.
3. Combining reduplication with an ongoing action. Reduplication frames a brief, self-contained act, so it clashes with the progressive 正在 ("in the middle of doing").
❌ 他正在看看电视。
Incorrect — 正在 marks an ongoing action, which contradicts the 'brief, done-and-dusted' sense of 看看.
✅ 他正在看电视。
tā zhèngzài kàn diànshì
He's watching TV right now. — plain verb for an ongoing action.
4. Using plain reduplication for a completed past action. 看看 is a suggestion or non-past act. To narrate a brief action that already happened, slot 了 inside: 看了看.
❌ 他昨天看看我的报告就走了。
Incorrect — for a completed brief action use 看了看, not 看看.
✅ 他昨天看了看我的报告就走了。
tā zuótiān kàn le kàn wǒ de bàogào jiù zǒu le
He glanced at my report yesterday and left. — see the V了V page.
Key Takeaways
- Verb reduplication softens an action into "a little / briefly / give it a try" — it is a politeness and diminutive device, not repetition.
- The added syllable is neutral tone: 看看 = kànkan, 试试 = shìshi.
- It thrives in suggestions and requests, turning blunt commands into friendly invitations: 你看看, 咱们商量商量吧.
- Only volitional, controllable verbs reduplicate; states like 是, 知道, 有 do not.
- The shapes branch by syllable count and tense — VV / V一V, ABAB, and the completed V了V — with 看一下 as a close cousin.

- Two-Syllable Reduplication (休息休息, 研究研究)HSK 3 — A two-syllable verb reduplicates whole, as ABAB — 休息休息 (xiūxi xiūxi), 研究研究 (yánjiū yánjiū), 商量商量 (shāngliang shāngliang) — never AABB and never with 一. Separable verbs like 见面 double only their verb part: 见见面.

- Softeners: …一下 and …一点儿HSK 2 — Two little tails shrink a request so it feels like a small favor: …一下 (yíxià) after a verb ('just / real quick' — 看一下, 等一下) and …一点儿 (yìdiǎnr) after an adjective ('a bit' — 便宜一点儿, 小声一点儿). Both make an ask sound smaller, and therefore easier to grant.
