Progressive 在 / 正在 / 正 (+ V): In the Middle Of

Put (zài) in front of a verb and you say the action is in progress — happening right now, unfolding, not yet done. 我在吃饭 is "I'm eating," 他在打电话 is "he's making a call." This is the closest Chinese gets to the English "-ing" progressive, and for a beginner it's one of the highest-value patterns to lock in: it lets you say what someone is doing at this very moment. Two stronger flavors build on it — 正在 (zhèngzài) leans on "right in the middle of it," and bare (zhèng) spotlights the exact coinciding moment. The one trap to remember from the start: this is aspect, not tense, so 在 + V happily describes the past and the future too, not just now.

在 + verb: the action-in-progress marker

The pattern is simply 在 + verb (+ object). It answers "what are you doing?" and paints an action mid-flow.

我在吃饭,等会儿打给你。

wǒ zài chī fàn, děng huìr dǎ gěi nǐ

I'm eating, I'll call you back in a bit. (informal) — 在吃 = the eating is under way.

别吵,爸爸在打电话。

bié chǎo, bàba zài dǎ diànhuà

Quiet down, Dad's on the phone. (informal) — 在打电话 = the call is in progress.

你在干什么?——我在看新闻。

nǐ zài gàn shénme? — wǒ zài kàn xīnwén

What are you doing? — I'm watching the news. (informal) — 在 both in the question and the answer.

外面在下雨,带把伞吧。

wàimian zài xià yǔ, dài bǎ sǎn ba

It's raining outside, take an umbrella. (informal) — even weather takes 在 for an event in progress.

💡
English fuses "in progress" with "present time" into one form ("I am eating"). Chinese splits them: 在 supplies only the in-progress shape; the time comes from a time word (现在, 昨天, 明天) or context. That's why the same 我在睡觉 can mean "I'm sleeping" now or "I was sleeping" last night — see the past/future examples below.

正在 and 正: right at this moment

Both 正在 and 正 sharpen 在 to "at this precise moment." 正在 is the everyday emphatic — "right in the middle of it." alone is more literary and almost always leans on a final , pointing to a moment that coincides with something else.

FormNuanceExample
在 + Vplain "in progress"我在开会 — I'm in a meeting
正在 + Vemphatic "right in the middle of it now"我正在开会 — I'm in a meeting right now
正 + V + 呢this exact, coinciding moment我正开着会呢 — I'm right in a meeting

他正在睡觉,你晚点儿再来。

tā zhèngzài shuìjiào, nǐ wǎndiǎnr zài lái

He's asleep right now, come back a little later. (informal) — 正在 stresses the ongoing moment.

我正在开会,有事发消息。

wǒ zhèngzài kāihuì, yǒu shì fā xiāoxi

I'm in a meeting right now — message me if something's up. (informal) — 正在 for 'in the thick of it'.

你来得正好,我正做饭呢。

nǐ lái de zhèng hǎo, wǒ zhèng zuò fàn ne

You've come at just the right moment, I'm cooking. (informal) — 正…呢 marks the coinciding instant.

The progressive works at any time

Because 在 marks shape, not tense, a single time word slides the whole scene into the past or the future while the 在 phrase stays put. This is where the "-ing = present tense" instinct from English actively misleads.

昨天你打电话的时候,我正在睡觉。

zuótiān nǐ dǎ diànhuà de shíhou, wǒ zhèngzài shuìjiào

When you called yesterday, I was sleeping. (neutral) — past setting, but the progressive 正在 is unchanged.

明天上午你来的时候,我可能正在上课。

míngtiān shàngwǔ nǐ lái de shíhou, wǒ kěnéng zhèngzài shàng kè

When you come tomorrow morning, I'll probably be in class. (neutral) — future setting, same progressive.

孩子们正在操场上踢足球。

háizimen zhèngzài cāochǎng shang tī zúqiú

The kids are playing soccer on the field right now. (neutral) — a lively scene caught mid-action.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding 了 to a progressive. 在 (ongoing) and 了 (completed) contradict each other — an action can't be both in progress and finished.

❌ 我在吃了饭。

Incorrect — 在 marks an action in progress, so it can't take the completion marker 了. Drop the 了.

✅ 我在吃饭,马上就好。

wǒ zài chī fàn, mǎshàng jiù hǎo

I'm eating, I'll be done soon. — 在 with no 了.

2. Negating with 不 instead of 没. "I'm not sleeping (right now)" denies an ongoing action, which is 没(在), not 不. 不睡觉 means "won't sleep / doesn't sleep."

❌ 我不在睡觉,你说吧。

Off for 'I'm not sleeping right now' — an ongoing action is negated with 没(在); use 没在睡觉.

✅ 我没在睡觉,你说吧。

wǒ méi zài shuìjiào, nǐ shuō ba

I'm not sleeping, go ahead. — 没在 negates the progressive.

3. Putting 在 on a state or adjective. The progressive needs a dynamic action verb. States (饿, 高兴, 是) can't be "in progress."

❌ 我在饿。

Incorrect — 饿 is a state, not an action, so it can't take progressive 在; the natural sentence is 我饿了.

✅ 我饿了,我们去吃点儿东西吧。

wǒ è le, wǒmen qù chī diǎnr dōngxi ba

I'm hungry, let's go grab a bite. — a state uses 了 / 很, not 在.

4. Confusing progressive 在 with locative 在. 在 also means "at / located at" (在家 "at home"). Before a verb it's progressive; before a place noun it's locative. Don't let the place-word 在 swallow the verb.

❌ 我在家。(想表达

Only 'I'm at home' — this is locative 在 + a place; to say 'I'm cooking' you need a verb: 我在做饭.

✅ 我在家做饭呢。

wǒ zài jiā zuò fàn ne

I'm at home cooking. — locative 在家 + the verb 做饭; only the second sense is progressive.

Key Takeaways

  • 在 + verb marks an action in progress: 我在吃饭, 他在打电话 — the Chinese "-ing."
  • 正在 adds emphatic "right in the middle of it," and bare (usually + 呢) pins the exact coinciding moment: 正做饭呢.
  • It's aspect, not tense — with the right time word it covers past (昨天…正在睡觉) and future (明天…正在上课) alike.
  • Negate with 没(在), never 不; and never bolt 了 onto a progressive.
  • The progressive needs a dynamic action verb — not a state (饿, 是) — and don't confuse it with the locative "at" 在 (在家). See 在 as a location verb.
