呢 for the Progressive (…呢 / bare 呢)

The little particle (ne) at the end of a sentence adds a "right now, as we speak" warmth to an ongoing action — and, remarkably, it can carry that ongoing sense by itself, with no progressive 在 at all. 他在打电话呢 is "he's on the phone (right now)"; drop the 在 and 下雨呢 still means "it's raining." Where 在 states the bare fact of an action in progress, 呢 wraps it in immediacy and a conversational, almost gestural feel — as if you're pointing at the scene. This is one of several jobs 呢 does, and the one learners most often mistake for the question 呢 (as in 你呢? "and you?"). Keeping those apart is the heart of this page.

在 + V + 呢: the warm progressive

The fullest, friendliest progressive frames the verb with 在 in front and 呢 at the end. The 在 does the grammatical work; the 呢 adds "this is happening as we speak." You can dial the emphasis with 正在…呢.

FrameFeelExample
V + 呢casual, "currently"看书呢 — (I'm) reading
在 + V + 呢ongoing + warm immediacy在看书呢 — reading right now
正在 + V + 呢emphatic "right at this moment"正在看书呢 — right in the middle of reading

他在打电话呢,你等一下。

tā zài dǎ diànhuà ne, nǐ děng yíxià

He's on the phone right now, hold on. (informal) — 在…呢, the everyday warm progressive.

嘘,孩子睡觉呢。

xū, háizi shuìjiào ne

Shh, the kid's sleeping. (informal) — 呢 alone conveys the ongoing scene.

妈妈做饭呢,你先去写作业。

māma zuò fàn ne, nǐ xiān qù xiě zuòyè

Mom's cooking, go do your homework first. (informal) — bare V + 呢, no 在 needed.

💡
Think of 呢 as a spoken finger-point at what's going on. 在 tells you an action is in progress; 呢 adds "…right now, look." That's why 呢 is everywhere in casual speech and rare in formal writing — it carries the tone of someone describing a live scene.

呢 carrying the progressive alone

In relaxed speech, 呢 can shoulder the ongoing meaning with no 在 in sight. The verb plus 呢 is enough to say "this is happening." This is especially common with weather, states of activity, and short replies.

下雨呢,你带伞了吗?

xià yǔ ne, nǐ dài sǎn le ma?

It's raining — did you bring an umbrella? (informal) — 下雨呢 with no 在.

你干什么呢?——看电视呢。

nǐ gàn shénme ne? — kàn diànshì ne

What are you up to? — Watching TV. (informal) — question and answer both ride on 呢.

我正忙着呢,等会儿再说。

wǒ zhèng máng zhe ne, děng huìr zài shuō

I'm busy right now, let's talk later. (informal) — 着…呢 for an ongoing state, warmly.

别关电视,我看着呢。

bié guān diànshì, wǒ kàn zhe ne

Don't turn off the TV, I'm watching it. (informal) — 看着呢 = I'm in the middle of watching.

Not the question 呢: telling the ongoing 呢 apart

呢 does several jobs, and beginners collapse them. The topic 呢 (你呢? "and you?", 我的钥匙呢? "where are my keys?") reprises or asks-about a topic. The progressive 呢 here marks an action in progress. The clue is what comes before it: a bare noun + 呢 is the topic/where-question; a verb phrase + 呢 is the ongoing one.

他呢?——在楼下等着呢。

tā ne? — zài lóuxià děng zhe ne

Where's he? — Waiting downstairs. (informal) — first 呢 (他呢) is the where-question; second 呢 (等着呢) is progressive.

想什么呢?这么出神。

xiǎng shénme ne? zhème chūshén

What are you thinking about? You're miles away. (informal) — a wh-question wrapped in an ongoing feel; the 呢 here is not 吗.

Common Mistakes

1. Using 吗 with a wh-question, where 呢 belongs. A question already built with 什么 / 谁 / 哪儿 never takes 吗. If you want the "right now" flavor, close it with 呢.

❌ 你在看什么吗?

Incorrect — a 什么 question can't take 吗; use 呢: 你在看什么呢?

✅ 你在看什么呢?

nǐ zài kàn shénme ne?

What are you watching? — 呢 closes a wh-question with an ongoing feel.

2. Treating every 呢 as 'and you?'. After a verb phrase, 呢 marks an ongoing action, not "what about…?". 妈妈做饭呢 is "Mom's cooking," not "what about Mom's cooking?"

❌ 妈妈做饭呢 = 'What about Mom cooking?'

Mis-reading — after a verb phrase, 呢 is the progressive: 'Mom's cooking (right now).' The 'what about' 呢 follows a bare noun.

✅ 妈妈做饭呢,我们轻点儿。

māma zuò fàn ne, wǒmen qīng diǎnr

Mom's cooking, let's keep it down. — verb phrase + 呢 = ongoing action.

3. Bolting 呢 onto a completed event. The progressive 呢 wants something ongoing. Pairing it with completed 了 to mean "he has left" clashes; for "he's on his way," use 着…呢 or 在…呢.

❌ 他走了呢。(想说

Wrong for 'he's walking / on his way' — 走了 reports departure as done; the ongoing version is 他在走呢 / 他走着呢.

✅ 他在路上走着呢,马上就到。

tā zài lùshang zǒu zhe ne, mǎshàng jiù dào

He's on his way, he'll be here any minute. — 着…呢 for the ongoing motion.

4. Dropping the verb. 呢 needs a verb phrase to signal an ongoing action. A bare noun + 呢 becomes a where-question instead.

❌ 我饭呢。(想说

Not 'I'm eating' — 饭呢 reads as 'where's the food?'. You need the verb: 我吃饭呢 / 我在吃饭。

✅ 我吃饭呢,等会儿给你回电话。

wǒ chī fàn ne, děng huìr gěi nǐ huí diànhuà

I'm eating, I'll call you back in a bit. — verb + 呢 = the progressive.

Key Takeaways

  • Sentence-final gives an ongoing action a "right now, as we speak" warmth: 他在打电话呢.
  • It can carry the progressive alone, with no 在: 下雨呢, 看电视呢, 睡觉呢.
  • Pair it as 在 / 正在 … 呢 for the full conversational progressive; 呢 is casual speech, not formal writing.
  • It is not the question 呢: a verb phrase
    • 呢 is ongoing (做饭呢), a bare noun
      • 呢 is "where / what about…?" (你呢?).
  • Don't put 呢 on a completed 了 event, and don't drop the verb — 我饭呢 means "where's my food?", not "I'm eating."
