A single-syllable verb has two interchangeable ways to reduplicate: bare doubling (VV) or doubling with 一 inserted (V一V). 看看 (kànkan) and 看一看 (kàn yi kàn) mean exactly the same thing — "have a look." 想想 = 想一想 "think it over," 试试 = 试一试 "give it a try." Both belong to the softening system introduced in the reduplication overview: they shrink the action to a brief, casual, low-pressure dose. The only difference is that the 一 in V一V spells out the "one little bit" that VV already implies, giving the phrase a slightly fuller, more deliberate rhythm.
VV and V一V: the same softening, two rhythms
Think of the 一 as the visible form of the meaning "once / a little" that is baked into reduplication anyway. That is why the two forms are freely swappable. In fast, casual speech, the bare VV is the default because it is shorter. V一V slows the phrase down by one beat, so it feels a shade more deliberate — you hear it in slightly more careful speech and when the speaker wants to draw the moment out ("just take one little look").
| Verb | VV | V一V | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 看 (kàn) | 看看 (kànkan) | 看一看 (kàn yi kàn) | have a look |
| 想 (xiǎng) | 想想 (xiǎngxiang) | 想一想 (xiǎng yi xiǎng) | think it over |
| 试 (shì) | 试试 (shìshi) | 试一试 (shì yi shì) | give it a try |
| 说 (shuō) | 说说 (shuōshuo) | 说一说 (shuō yi shuō) | talk about a bit |
| 等 (děng) | 等等 (děngdeng) | 等一等 (děng yi děng) | wait a moment |
| 闻 (wén) | 闻闻 (wénwen) | 闻一闻 (wén yi wén) | have a sniff |
你看看这张照片,是不是他?
nǐ kànkan zhè zhāng zhàopiàn, shì bu shì tā?
Have a look at this photo — is that him? (informal) — bare VV.
这个问题你回家好好想一想。
zhège wèntí nǐ huí jiā hǎohǎo xiǎng yi xiǎng
Think this problem over carefully when you get home. (informal) — V一V feels a touch more deliberate.
不确定的话就试一试,反正没有坏处。
bú quèdìng dehuà jiù shì yi shì, fǎnzhèng méiyǒu huàichu
If you're not sure, just give it a try — there's no harm anyway. (informal)
The neutral tone and the 一
Two pronunciation points make or break this pattern. First, the second copy of the verb is neutral (toneless): 看看 is kànkan, 想想 is xiǎngxiang — light, unstressed. Second, in V一V the 一 is unstressed too, gliding by as a light yi: 看一看 = kàn yi kàn, 想一想 = xiǎng yi xiǎng. Do not give the 一 its full first tone or stress it; it is a hinge, not a beat you land on.
等一等,我马上就好。
děng yi děng, wǒ mǎshàng jiù hǎo
Wait a moment — I'll be ready in a second. (informal)
你闻闻这牛奶,是不是酸了?
nǐ wénwen zhè niúnǎi, shì bu shì suān le?
Give this milk a sniff — has it gone sour? (informal)
Softening requests and imperatives
The single most common home for one-syllable reduplication is the polite request. A bare verb command is abrupt; adding the doubling rounds it into a friendly ask. 你看看 (have a look), 你说说 (tell us a bit), 你问问 (why don't you ask). The object, if there is one, comes after the whole reduplication.
你说说到底发生了什么。
nǐ shuōshuo dàodǐ fāshēng le shénme
Tell us a bit about what actually happened. (informal) — 说说 softens the demand.
你去问一问老师这道题怎么做。
nǐ qù wèn yi wèn lǎoshī zhè dào tí zěnme zuò
Go ask the teacher a bit about how to do this problem. (informal)
来,尝一尝刚出锅的饺子。
lái, cháng yi cháng gāng chū guō de jiǎozi
Come, have a taste of the dumplings fresh out of the pot. (informal) — warm and inviting.
麻烦您帮我看看这个字怎么念。
máfan nín bāng wǒ kànkan zhège zì zěnme niàn
Could you help me by looking at how this character is read? (formal, polite) — 您 + softening 看看.
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting 一 into a two-syllable verb. V一V is for one-syllable verbs only. A disyllabic verb like 休息 doubles whole as ABAB, with no 一.
❌ 你休息一休息吧。
Incorrect — two-syllable verbs don't take 一; they reduplicate as ABAB.
✅ 你休息休息吧。
nǐ xiūxi xiūxi ba
Take a little rest. — 休息 doubles whole, no 一.
2. Treating 一 as a real counter. The 一 in V一V is frozen — it cannot be swapped for 两 or any other number to mean "twice."
❌ 我想看两看这部电影。
Incorrect — the 一 of 看一看 is fixed; there's no 看两看. For 'watch twice' use the times-measure 遍.
✅ 我想看两遍这部电影。
wǒ xiǎng kàn liǎng biàn zhè bù diànyǐng
I want to watch this film twice. — 遍 for a genuine count.
3. Mixing VV and V一V together. Pick one form. You cannot stack them into 看看一看.
❌ 你看看一看这个。
Incorrect — use either 看看 or 看一看, never both fused together.
✅ 你看一看这个。
nǐ kàn yi kàn zhège
Have a look at this. — one clean V一V.
4. Putting the object inside the reduplication. The object follows the whole doubled verb.
❌ 你试这双鞋试。
Incorrect — the object goes after the reduplication, not inside it.
✅ 你试试这双鞋。
nǐ shìshi zhè shuāng xié
Try these shoes on. — object after 试试.
Key Takeaways
- A one-syllable verb reduplicates as VV or V一V, and the two are fully interchangeable: 看看 = 看一看.
- 一 just spells out the "one little bit" that reduplication already means; V一V is a shade fuller and more deliberate, VV is the casual default.
- The second copy is neutral tone (kànkan), and in V一V the 一 is also unstressed (kàn yi kàn).
- It is the go-to way to soften requests: 你说说, 你问一问, 帮我看看.
- The object follows the whole doubling; never split it (试试这双鞋, not 试这双鞋试), and never add 一 to a two-syllable verb.
