English hides a split inside the single word "help." Chinese makes it visible with three shapes: 帮 (bāng), 帮助 (bāngzhù) and 帮忙 (bāngmáng). They are not free variants — they take their objects differently. 帮 and 帮助 help a person; 帮忙 already contains its object (忙, "a task/favor") and therefore can never take another. The single mistake that marks a learner is *帮忙我 — grammatically it's like saying "do-a-favor me." Get the three frames straight and the errors disappear.
帮: help someone (do something)
帮 takes a person, and optionally a verb phrase after: 帮 + person (+ verb). With just a person it means "help you/him"; add a verb and it becomes pivotal-style, "help someone do something." This is the most colloquial and by far the most common of the three in speech.
你能帮我搬一下这张桌子吗?
nǐ néng bāng wǒ bān yíxià zhè zhāng zhuōzi ma
Can you help me move this table? (informal) — 帮 + 我 + verb.
谢谢你帮我,我自己真的搞不定。
xièxie nǐ bāng wǒ, wǒ zìjǐ zhēn de gǎo bu dìng
Thanks for helping me — I really can't manage on my own. (informal) — 帮 + person alone.
我帮你问问吧。
wǒ bāng nǐ wènwen ba
Let me ask around for you. (informal)
帮助: the fuller, more formal "assist"
帮助 is the two-syllable, more formal word — "help / assist." It also takes a person and can add a verb (帮助 + person + verb), but it leans written or earnest, so it suits speeches, reports, and "helping" as a general act rather than a quick favor. It also doubles as a noun ("help / assistance").
这个软件帮助我们节省了很多时间。
zhège ruǎnjiàn bāngzhù wǒmen jiéshěng le hěn duō shíjiān
This software helped us save a lot of time. (neutral/written)
老师经常帮助有困难的学生。
lǎoshī jīngcháng bāngzhù yǒu kùnnan de xuésheng
The teacher often helps students who are struggling. (neutral)
你的建议对我帮助很大。
nǐ de jiànyì duì wǒ bāngzhù hěn dà
Your advice was a big help to me. (neutral) — 帮助 here is a noun.
帮忙: a separable verb that already owns its object
帮忙 is a 离合词 (separable verb): 帮 is the verb, 忙 is its object ("busyness / a task"). Because 忙 already fills the object slot, 帮忙 cannot take a person or task directly — no 帮忙我, no 帮忙搬桌子. To weave a person in, you split the word and insert them: 帮 + person + (个/一个/的) + 忙.
| Word | Frame | Takes a person-object? | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| 帮 (bāng) | 帮 + person (+ verb) | yes: 帮我 / 帮我搬 | colloquial |
| 帮助 (bāngzhù) | 帮助 + person (+ verb); also a noun | yes: 帮助学生 | formal / written |
| 帮忙 (bāngmáng) | 帮 (…) 忙 — separable | no — 忙 is already the object | colloquial |
能帮我个忙吗?
néng bāng wǒ ge máng ma
Can you do me a favor? (informal) — the person 我 sits inside the split 帮…忙.
他帮了我一个大忙。
tā bāng le wǒ yí ge dà máng
He did me a big favor. (informal) — 了 and the object slot land between 帮 and 忙.
大家都来帮忙,很快就搬完了。
dàjiā dōu lái bāngmáng, hěn kuài jiù bān wán le
Everyone pitched in to help, and we finished moving fast. (informal) — 帮忙 stands alone, no object.
Quick chooser
需要帮忙的话,随时叫我。
xūyào bāngmáng de huà, suíshí jiào wǒ
If you need help, call me anytime. (informal) — 帮忙 as a bare verb-object.
Common Mistakes
1. *帮忙我 — the classic error. 帮忙 already contains its object; it can't take 我. Use 帮我, or split 帮忙.
❌ 你能帮忙我吗?
Wrong — 帮忙 can't take a person-object.
✅ 你能帮我吗?
nǐ néng bāng wǒ ma
Can you help me? (or: 你能帮我个忙吗?)
2. Putting a task after 帮忙. A task-verb can't follow 帮忙 either; that's 帮's job.
❌ 你能帮忙我搬桌子吗?
Wrong — 帮忙 takes no task; use 帮 + person + verb.
✅ 你能帮我搬桌子吗?
nǐ néng bāng wǒ bān zhuōzi ma
Can you help me move the table?
3. Using formal 帮助 for a small everyday favor. Not wrong, but it sounds like a textbook among friends; 帮 is warmer.
❌ 你能帮助我一下吗?
Stiff for a small favor — sounds bookish in casual speech.
✅ 你能帮我一下吗?
nǐ néng bāng wǒ yíxià ma
Can you give me a hand? — natural for everyday favors.
4. Mis-ordering the split 帮…忙. The person goes between 帮 and 忙, not after 忙.
❌ 你能帮个忙我吗?
Wrong order — the person belongs inside the split.
✅ 你能帮我个忙吗?
nǐ néng bāng wǒ ge máng ma
Can you do me a favor?
Key Takeaways

- To include a person with 帮忙, split it: 帮我一个忙, 帮了他的忙 — 了 and measure words also fall inside.
- The signature error is *帮忙我; the fixes are 帮我 or 帮我个忙.
- 帮助 works as a noun too: 对我帮助很大.

- Pivotal Sentences (兼语句)HSK 2 — In a 兼语句 the object of the first verb is at the same time the subject of the second — 我请他来, 老师让我们读课文 — with 请/让/叫/使/派 as the pivotal verbs and no 'to' before the second verb.
