帮 vs 帮助 vs 帮忙 — Three 'Helps'

Three of the first words a learner meets — 帮, 帮助, 帮忙 — all mean "help," and they are not interchangeable synonyms you can pick by feel. What separates them is pure grammar: how each one attaches to a person and a task. wants a person and the thing to do — help someone do something. 帮助 is the heavier, more formal verb that can stand on its own with an object or even work as a noun ("your help"). 帮忙 looks like a verb but is secretly a verb-object compound (离合词) — 帮 "help" plus 忙 "a busy task" — which means it is already "full up" and cannot take another object behind it. That one structural fact is behind the single most common error here: *帮忙我. This page sorts the three by their grammar; the everyday spoken uses of "help me" are gathered on help me — 帮忙.

The decision grid

WordStructureTakes an object?Example
帮 (bāng)帮 + person + verbyes — a person, then the task帮我搬桌子 (help me move the table)
帮助 (bāngzhù)verb or nounyes — object directly; also a noun帮助学生 / 你的帮助 (help students / your help)
帮忙 (bāngmáng)离合词 (帮 + 忙)NO direct object — it splits instead帮个忙 / 帮我一个忙 (lend a hand / do me a favor)
💡
The trap is 帮忙. Because it already contains its own object (忙), you can't stick another one on the end. "Help me" is 帮我 (using 帮), or you split 帮忙 open and slot the person inside: 帮我一个忙. Never *帮忙我.

帮: help someone DO something

帮 is the workhorse of casual speech. Its natural shape is 帮 + person + verb phrase — you name who you're helping and what they're doing. It's quick, warm, and everywhere in daily life.

你能帮我搬一下桌子吗?

nǐ néng bāng wǒ bān yíxià zhuōzi ma?

Can you help me move the table? (informal) — 帮 + 我 + the task 搬桌子.

帮我看看这个句子对不对。

bāng wǒ kànkan zhège jùzi duì bu duì

Help me check whether this sentence is right. (informal) — 帮我 + verb 看看.

走的时候帮我把灯关了,谢谢。

zǒu de shíhou bāng wǒ bǎ dēng guān le, xièxie

Turn off the light for me when you leave, thanks. (informal) — 帮我 + a 把 clause.

帮助: the fuller, formal verb — and a noun

帮助 is 帮's dressed-up relative. As a verb it takes an object directly and suits formal, abstract, or written contexts — helping students, helping the poor, helping a cause. Uniquely, it also works as a noun: "help / assistance."

老师很耐心地帮助每一个学生。

lǎoshī hěn nàixīn de bāngzhù měi yí ge xuésheng

The teacher patiently helps every student. (neutral/formal) — 帮助 as a transitive verb.

谢谢你一直以来的帮助。

xièxie nǐ yìzhí yǐlái de bāngzhù

Thank you for all your help over the years. (neutral) — 帮助 as a NOUN after 的.

这些资料对我的研究帮助很大。

zhèxiē zīliào duì wǒ de yánjiū bāngzhù hěn dà

These materials are a big help to my research. (neutral) — 帮助 as a noun, 'a big help'.

帮忙: lend a hand — but hold no object

帮忙 means "help out, lend a hand," and it is intransitive: it stands alone or splits, but it never takes a following object. When you need to name the person, you either switch to 帮 (帮我) or split the compound and insert the person: 帮 + 我 + 一个 + 忙. The 离合词 also splits for 了, measure phrases, and question words — a pattern shared across separable verbs.

你能帮个忙吗?我一个人搬不动。

nǐ néng bāng ge máng ma? wǒ yí ge rén bān bu dòng

Can you lend a hand? I can't move it by myself. (informal) — 帮个忙, split by 个.

大家都来帮忙,很快就干完了。

dàjiā dōu lái bāngmáng, hěn kuài jiù gàn wán le

Everyone pitched in, and it was done in no time. (informal) — 帮忙 standing alone, no object.

这次真是麻烦你了,帮了我一个大忙。

zhè cì zhēnshì máfan nǐ le, bāng le wǒ yí ge dà máng

I really put you out this time — you did me a huge favor. (informal) — split wide open: 帮 + 了 + 我 + 一个大 + 忙.

不好意思,我帮不上什么忙。

bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ bāng bu shàng shénme máng

Sorry, I'm not able to be of much help. (informal) — potential complement 帮不上…忙, still split.

Common Mistakes

1. Giving 帮忙 a direct object. 帮忙 already holds 忙; use 帮 + person, or split it as 帮…忙.

❌ 你能帮忙我吗?

Wrong — 帮忙 can't take an object; say 你能帮我吗 or 你能帮我一个忙吗?

✅ 你能帮我一个忙吗?

nǐ néng bāng wǒ yí ge máng ma?

Can you do me a favor? — the person 我 goes INSIDE the split 帮…忙.

2. Treating 帮 as a noun. "Your help" is 帮助, not 帮; 帮 is only a verb.

❌ 谢谢你的帮。

Wrong — the noun is 帮助: 谢谢你的帮助。

✅ 谢谢你的帮助,我一个人真做不完。

xièxie nǐ de bāngzhù, wǒ yí ge rén zhēn zuò bu wán

Thanks for your help — I really couldn't finish alone. — noun 帮助.

3. Using formal 帮助 for a quick everyday favor. For a small hands-on task, 帮 is what people actually say; 帮助 sounds stiff.

❌ 你能帮助我搬桌子吗?

Grammatical but stiff for a small task — natural speech is 你能帮我搬桌子吗?

✅ 你能帮我搬桌子吗?

nǐ néng bāng wǒ bān zhuōzi ma?

Can you help me move the table? — everyday 帮 for a quick favor.

4. Splitting 帮忙 wrongly when there's an object. The 了 and the person all go inside the compound, not after 帮忙.

❌ 他帮忙了我一个大忙。

Wrong — 了 and the object go inside: 他帮了我一个大忙。

✅ 他帮了我一个大忙,我得请他吃饭。

tā bāng le wǒ yí ge dà máng, wǒ děi qǐng tā chī fàn

He did me a big favor — I ought to treat him to a meal. — the split holds 了, 我, and 一个大.

Key Takeaways

  • = help someone DO something: 帮 + person + verb (帮我搬桌子) — the everyday spoken choice.
  • 帮助 = a fuller, more formal verb that takes an object directly, and can also be a noun (你的帮助).
  • 帮忙 = a 离合词 meaning "lend a hand" — intransitive, so it never takes a following object.
  • To say "help me" with 帮忙, split it: 帮我一个忙; the person and 了 go inside, never after (*帮忙我).
  • Use 帮 for quick favors, 帮助 for formal or abstract help and for the noun "help."

  • Asking for Help: 帮我/帮忙HSK 2To ask for help you frame the verb 帮 politely: 帮我 + verb ('help me [do]' — 帮我看看) for a named task, or the separable 帮忙 / 帮个忙 ('give me a hand / do me a favor') for help in general. The strategy is wrapping either in a modal question — 你能帮我…吗?麻烦你帮个忙 — so you're asking, not ordering.
